Chapter 18 - Chapter 8 - Echoes of Steel And Magic

⚔️ Round One – Match 8

Varek Stonehart vs Cassian Storme

The arena floor had been repaired.

Fresh stone sealed the cracks from earlier battles.

The referee stepped forward.

"Victory by knockout, surrender, or ring out."

Barrier activated.

Two very different auras faced each other.

---

Varek Stonehart

Weapon: Warhammer

Magic: Stone Armor

Massive build. Calm expression.

He rested the warhammer over his shoulder as if it weighed nothing.

---

Cassian Storme

Weapon: Twin Short Swords

Magic: Wind Blade (human variant)

Lean. Sharp-eyed. Confident.

He spun one blade between his fingers.

"Big armor. Big hammer. Predictable."

Varek gave a small grunt.

"We'll see."

DING!

---

Speed vs Weight

Cassian moved first.

A burst of wind gathered at his feet.

He vanished forward.

WHOOSH!

Twin blades slashed from opposite angles—

CLANG!

They struck stone.

Varek's forearms were coated in hardened rock.

Stone Armor activated.

Gray plates formed over his shoulders and chest.

Cassian leaped back.

"Huh."

He flicked his blade.

"Wind Slice."

A crescent of compressed air shot forward.

FSSHHH!

It struck Varek's chest—

Stone cracked slightly—

But didn't break.

Varek stepped forward.

Slow.

Steady.

Each step heavy.

---

Hammer Descent

Cassian circled.

Quick footwork.

Looking for gaps.

Varek suddenly swung.

Not at Cassian—

At the ground.

"Quake."

BOOOOM!

The hammer smashed into stone.

Shockwave rippled outward.

Cassian's footing broke.

He stumbled slightly.

Varek followed with a horizontal swing.

Cassian ducked barely in time.

The hammer passed over his head.

The wind from it alone pushed him back.

Too heavy to block directly, Cassian thought.

---

Escalation

Cassian inhaled.

Mana surged.

Wind gathered around both blades.

"Cross Gale!"

He dashed in.

Twin wind-infused slashes struck Varek's chest armor.

SHHKK! CRACK!

Stone fractured more deeply this time.

Fragments fell.

Students leaned forward.

"It's breaking!"

Varek looked down.

Armor cracked across his torso.

He tightened his grip.

"Then I'll end it."

Stone Armor thickened again.

More compact.

Denser.

He charged.

Faster than before.

The arena floor trembled under his steps.

Cassian widened his eyes.

He can move that fast?

---

Final Exchange

Cassian tried to flank—

Varek anticipated.

He pivoted mid-charge.

Warhammer arced upward.

Cassian crossed both blades to block.

CRAAAASH!

The impact exploded.

Wind shattered.

Cassian was launched backward.

He rolled across the stone.

Barely stopping near the ring's edge.

He coughed.

Hands shaking.

Blades still in grip.

Varek approached slowly.

Hammer resting at his side.

Cassian tried to stand—

His knees trembled.

He forced one more wind blade forward.

It hit Varek's shoulder—

Cracked stone—

But lacked power.

Varek stopped in front of him.

Raised the hammer slightly.

Not to strike—

Just enough to show the difference.

Cassian exhaled.

"…I surrender."

The referee raised his hand.

"Winner — Varek Stonehart!"

---

Aftermath

Some students were surprised.

"The hammer guy actually won." "Stone Armor is solid…"

Cassian stood slowly.

He gave Varek a small smirk.

"Round two. I'll cut deeper."

Varek nodded once.

"I'll reinforce harder."

They exited opposite sides

⚔️ Round One – Match 9

Zarek Dune vs Haruto Kline

Arena repaired.

Dust cleared.

Crowd steady again.

The referee raised his hand.

"Victory by knockout, surrender, or ring out."

Barrier activated.

Two contrasting fighters stepped forward.

---

Zarek Dune

Weapon: Curved Scimitar

Magic: Sand Manipulation

Calm eyes. Desert-born composure.

---

Haruto Kline

Weapon: Broad Blade

Magic: Earth Spikes

Sturdy stance. Direct power type.

Haruto planted his blade into the stone briefly.

"Let's see if sand can handle real ground."

Zarek rotated his scimitar once.

"Sand is older than stone."

DING!

---

Opening Clash

Haruto moved first.

Heavy step.

Broad blade swung diagonally.

WHOOOSH!

Zarek blocked.

CLANG!

The force pushed him half a step back.

Strong arms…

Haruto didn't give space.

He stomped.

"Earth Spike!"

CRRRRK!

Three jagged stone pillars erupted upward.

Zarek twisted mid-step—

One spike grazed his sleeve.

Another forced him sideways.

Students leaned forward.

"That was close!"

---

Sand Takes Form

Zarek narrowed his eyes.

Mana pulsed beneath the arena surface.

"Sand Flow."

FSSSHHH—

Fine grains burst from cracks in the stone.

They circled around Zarek's feet.

Not a storm—

Just controlled movement.

Haruto charged again.

Blade descending vertically.

Zarek stepped aside and slashed.

SHING!

A shallow cut across Haruto's shoulder guard.

Haruto grunted.

He retaliated instantly.

Their blades locked.

CLANG!

Close distance.

Breath against breath.

"You're lighter," Haruto said.

"Then I'll move lighter," Zarek replied.

---

Mid-Fight Adjustment

Haruto pulled back and thrust his blade into the ground again.

"Spire Cage!"

CRACK! CRACK! CRACK!

Four stone spikes erupted around Zarek in a square.

Not upward—

Inward.

Trying to trap him.

Zarek's eyes sharpened.

Good idea.

He slammed his foot down.

"Dune Lift."

The sand beneath him surged upward.

FWOOM!

He rose slightly as the spikes collided beneath him.

Stone scraped against stone.

Zarek flipped off the sand pillar.

Landed behind Haruto.

Slashed—

Haruto turned in time.

CLANG!

Steel rang sharply.

Both slid apart.

Now breathing slightly heavier.

Moderate damage on both sides.

---

Momentum Shift

Haruto roared.

Mana flared brighter.

A large spike erupted directly under Zarek.

This one hit.

CRACK!

Zarek was thrown sideways.

He rolled across the stone.

Crowd reacted.

"He got him!"

Zarek stood quickly.

Small cut near his brow.

Blood thin but visible.

He wiped it away.

"…Alright."

The sand around him increased.

Not wildly—

But denser.

---

Final Exchange

Haruto rushed for the finish.

Broad blade aimed at Zarek's midsection.

Zarek stepped inward instead of back.

The sand at his feet surged forward.

"Dune Spiral."

FSSSHHH!

Sand wrapped around Haruto's front leg.

Not fully binding—

Just slowing.

That slight delay changed the timing.

Zarek rotated his body.

Clean horizontal strike.

SHHHING!

The scimitar stopped at Haruto's throat.

At the same time—

Sand tightened around his leg, forcing him slightly off balance.

Silence.

Haruto looked at the blade.

Then at his trapped leg.

He exhaled.

"…You controlled the timing."

Sand loosened immediately.

Zarek stepped back respectfully.

Haruto raised a hand.

"I surrender."

The referee lifted his arm.

"Winner — Zarek Dune!"

---

Aftermath

Moderate damage.

No overwhelming domination.

No ring-out.

Clear tactical win.

Students nodded in approval.

"Smart fighter." "He waits for the mistake."

Zarek walked off calmly.

---

⚔️ Round One – Match 10

Magnus Ferron vs Cedric Hale (Third Year)

Arena reset.

Barrier humming faintly.

The referee's voice echoed:

"Victory by knockout, surrender, or ring out. Begin!"

---

Magnus Ferron

Weapon: Chain Blade

Magic: Magnet Manipulation

Tall. Calm. Analytical eyes.

---

Cedric Hale

Weapon: Twin Axes

Magic: Steel Reinforcement

Broader build. Heavy stance.

Cedric spun one axe casually.

"So you're the magnet kid?"

Magnus adjusted his grip on the chain handle.

"…Let's test that."

DING!

---

Opening Pressure

Cedric rushed first.

Axes swung in a crossing strike.

WHOOSH—CLANG!

Magnus barely blocked with the flat of his chain blade.

The impact forced him back.

Heavy. Direct type.

Cedric followed with another swing.

Magnus flicked his wrist.

SHRRRRT—!

The chain blade extended, wrapping briefly around one axe.

Cedric yanked back with brute strength.

The chain snapped loose.

Crowd murmured.

"That weapon's tricky…"

---

Magnet Shift

Cedric lunged again.

This time Magnus didn't block.

He stepped sideways.

"Polar Shift."

A faint metallic hum filled the air.

Cedric's right axe tilted mid-swing.

"—What?"

The weapon pulled slightly off its path.

Just enough.

Magnus's chain whipped forward.

SHING!

A shallow cut across Cedric's side.

Cedric growled.

"You're interfering with my weapon!"

Magnus gave no reply.

---

Counter Adjustment

Cedric slammed both axes into the ground.

Mana flared.

His weapons hardened further.

"Let's see you pull this!"

He charged aggressively.

This time Magnus felt the difference.

Stronger magnetic resistance…

Cedric's axe grazed Magnus's shoulder.

Students gasped.

Magnus stepped back.

Small tear in uniform.

First blood drawn.

Cedric smirked.

"Your trick isn't absolute."

---

Tactical Turn

Magnus inhaled slowly.

Then—

He loosened the chain entirely.

"Full Release."

The chain blade extended fully, circling in a wide arc.

He didn't pull Cedric's weapons directly.

Instead—

He altered their weight distribution.

Subtle.

Cedric stepped forward—

His left axe dipped slightly.

Balance shifted.

That tiny misalignment slowed his follow-up strike.

Magnus stepped in.

Chain wrapped around both axes at once.

SHRRRRT!

He twisted sharply.

Cedric's grip slipped.

One axe fell.

CLANG!

Gasps echoed.

Magnus pulled hard.

The remaining axe was dragged from Cedric's hand.

Chain tightened around his torso instead.

Cedric struggled.

The chain constricted further.

Metal pressing against reinforced armor.

Cedric gritted his teeth.

"…Tch."

He tried to move.

Couldn't.

After three seconds—

He raised a hand.

"I yield."

The referee lifted Magnus's arm.

"Winner — Magnus Ferron!"

---

Aftermath

Controlled victory.

Not overwhelming.

Not flashy.

Strategic.

Students whispered:

"That's dangerous." "He doesn't even rush."

Magnus retracted the chain calmly.
