Chapter 26 - The First Move

The hospital didn't forget quickly.

By the next morning, the previous night's ICU incident had already turned into quiet conversation across departments.

Not loud gossip.

Just—

observations.

"She handled it well."

"She always does."

"And he was there again."

"That's not new."

"No. But this time… he stayed."

At the nurse's station, Meena didn't even pretend to be subtle.

"He didn't leave," she said the moment Shivanya walked in.

Shivanya didn't look up from the file she was reading.

"He had work."

"In the ICU?"

Silence.

Meena leaned closer.

"You're not denying it."

"I'm working."

"That's also not a denial."

Across the corridor, Aditya stood with his arms crossed, watching her.

He didn't approach immediately.

Because something had shifted.

And he wasn't sure yet what it meant.

By noon, the hospital administration sent an internal notice:

"Final coordination meeting for Cardiac Research Wing – 4 PM"

Mandatory attendance for key staff.

Including Shivanya.

The conference room felt colder than usual that afternoon.

Air-conditioned silence.

Controlled voices.

Professional smiles.

Rhea Malhotra was already seated when Shivanya walked in.

Not reviewing files.

Not speaking.

Just—

waiting.

"Doctor Shivanya," Rhea said, her tone smooth.

"Please, sit."

Shivanya nodded and took her seat.

Across the table, Rudraksh noticed the interaction immediately.

He didn't interrupt.

But his attention sharpened.

The meeting began normally.

Layouts. Timelines. Equipment discussions.

Nothing unusual.

Until—

Rhea spoke.

"We've reviewed the cardiology workflow suggestions."

She tapped the file lightly.

"Some of them are… unconventional."

The room shifted slightly.

Not visibly.

But perceptibly.

Shivanya didn't react.

"Unconventional how?" she asked calmly.

Rhea leaned back slightly.

"They prioritize emergency flexibility over research efficiency."

"That's intentional."

"But this is a research facility."

"And a hospital."

A pause.

Rhea smiled faintly.

"Of course."

Then—

"We also consulted a senior consultant from Delhi."

The room stilled slightly.

"They had… different recommendations."

That was the move.

Not direct.

Not personal.

But strategic.

Shivanya understood immediately.

This wasn't about design.

It was about authority.

"What did they recommend?" she asked.

Rhea slid the document across.

Shivanya glanced at it.

Then closed it.

"This will slow emergency response," she said.

"That's an assumption."

"It's a calculation."

Another pause.

Rhea tilted her head slightly.

"You seem very confident."

"I work here."

"And the consultant has twenty-five years of experience."

Shivanya met her gaze.

"And I see what happens here every day."

Silence.

Clean.

Sharp.

Before it could stretch further—

Rudraksh spoke.

"We're not outsourcing ground reality."

The room shifted again.

Rhea didn't look at him immediately.

But when she did—

her expression remained composed.

"Of course," she said.

"I'm only presenting options."

The meeting continued.

But the tension didn't leave.

Outside, as people began to disperse—

Aditya finally stepped toward Shivanya.

"That was deliberate," he said quietly.

"I know."

"You're okay?"

"Yes."

"You don't look affected."

"I am."

He studied her for a moment.

Then nodded.

Across the corridor, Kabir stood beside Rudraksh.

"She made her move."

"Yes."

"And you blocked it."

"Yes."

Kabir glanced toward Shivanya.

"This won't stop here."

"I know."

Later, near the hospital exit—

Shivanya stepped outside alone.

For once.

No one followed immediately.

No conversation.

No interruption.

Just—

air.

She exhaled slowly.

Not tired.

Not shaken.

Just—

aware.

A few seconds later—

footsteps.

She didn't turn.

"You didn't have to do that," she said.

Rudraksh stopped beside her.

"I did."

"It was a professional discussion."

"It wasn't just that."

She looked at him.

"You're making it visible."

"So is she."

"That's different."

"How?"

"She's allowed to."

"And you're not?"

"That's not what I said."

A pause.

"You shouldn't get involved because of me."

He held her gaze.

"What if I'm already involved?"

That landed deeper than expected.

She looked away.

For the first time—

not because she was calm.

But because she needed a second.

"This complicates things," she said softly.

"I know."

"And you still—"

"Yes."

Across the parking area—

Rhea stood beside her car.

Watching.

her expression didn't hide it completely.

her next move wouldn't be subtle.
