CHAPTER 6: SECRETS UNRAVELED

Hoseok didn't sleep that night.

The letter sat on his desk, untouched, its edges worn from years of being carried from place to place like a ghost he refused to face. The room was dark except for the faint glow of the streetlight outside, shadows stretching across the walls like they were listening.

Jimin's words echoed in his mind.

Don't walk alone.

Hoseok ran a hand through his hair and exhaled slowly.

For the first time, the letter didn't feel like something he was avoiding.

It felt like something that was waiting.

The next day passed in fragments.

Laughter in the hallways. Professors droning on. Friends calling his name. Hoseok smiled when he was expected to, joked when it felt natural—but something underneath had shifted. Like a knot slowly loosening.

Jimin noticed.

He always did.

"You're quieter today," Jimin said as they walked back from class. Not accusing. Just observing.

Hoseok shrugged. "Guess I ran out of jokes."

Jimin gave him a look. "That's impossible."

A pause.

"Did you sleep?" Jimin asked.

Hoseok shook his head.

They stopped near the benches outside the library, the late afternoon sun casting long shadows across the ground. Students passed by, unaware that something important hovered between them.

"I think," Hoseok said slowly, "that the letter wasn't meant to explain why he left."

Jimin leaned against the railing, listening.

"I think it was meant to tell me something he couldn't say out loud."

Jimin's voice was gentle. "And that scares you."

"Yes."

Hoseok looked at him then. Really looked.

"What if it changes everything?" Hoseok asked. "What if it explains too much?"

Jimin didn't answer immediately.

"Then it was always meant to be known," he said finally. "Even if it hurts."

Hoseok swallowed.

That night, he opened it.

The paper inside was thin, creased down the middle. The handwriting was familiar—slanted slightly, uneven in places, like the person writing it hadn't stopped shaking.

Hoseok,

If you're reading this, it means I wasn't brave enough to stay.

Hoseok's chest tightened.

I know you think I left because I stopped caring. But the truth is—I cared too much. I saw the way you smiled for everyone, the way you broke in silence. And I was afraid that one day, you'd disappear without anyone noticing.

His hands trembled.

I tried to save you, but I was drowning too. And I didn't know how to survive without losing myself.

A tear slipped down Hoseok's cheek before he realized it.

If you hate me for leaving, I understand. But please don't hate yourself for surviving.

The letter ended there.

No apology.

No goodbye.

Just the truth.

Hoseok folded the paper slowly, his breath uneven. The room felt smaller, heavier—but clearer.

For the first time, the past didn't feel like a shadow chasing him.

It felt like something finally standing still.

The next morning, Hoseok found Jimin sitting on the same steps behind the dorms.

"You came," Jimin said, a small smile forming.

"I opened it," Hoseok replied.

Jimin didn't ask what it said.

Instead, he waited.

"He wasn't running from me," Hoseok said quietly. "He was running from himself."

Jimin nodded once. "That happens."

Hoseok sat beside him. "I think… I blamed myself because it was easier than accepting that sometimes people leave even when they care."

Jimin's voice was steady. "That doesn't make your pain less real."

Hoseok looked at him, eyes clearer than they had been in a long time.

"Thank you," he said. "For not forcing me. For staying."

Jimin shrugged lightly. "Someone had to."

They sat there as the day slowly woke up around them.

The letter was no longer a secret.

But not all secrets unravel at once.

Some wait.

And some truths—

were still watching from the silence.
