Not a change that was less complete or more complete. A change that was in a different direction. Riku wrote back saying forty-eight hours if Sable's current processing allocation held, which it would unless something else required reallocation, which he was ensuring it would not.
Elian wrote thank you. Riku wrote that it was an operational necessity not a favor. Elian wrote that he understood the distinction and thanked him anyway. Riku did not respond to this, which was its own kind of response.
The team call the following morning had a different quality than the previous calls. It was not louder or more urgent in surface register but it was denser, the way a room becomes denser when the people in it are all thinking about the same thing from different angles and the angles have not yet been reconciled into a shared picture.
Maye opened by asking each of them to characterize in one sentence what they thought the Nairobi paper's most significant finding was, not the finding they thought was most scientifically interesting but the finding with the most immediate relevance to what Helix was doing and why they were all still on Mars.
