Chapter 18 - 20.The Shadow Returns

The night over Lake Como was calm.

Too calm.

The water shimmered under silver moonlight as Elara stood beside the terrace railing, turning the ring slowly on her finger. The diamond caught the light every time she moved her hand.

She still couldn't believe it had happened.

After everything—

the lies, the war, the danger—

they had reached this moment.

Behind her, Ares watched quietly.

His eyes weren't on the lake.

They were on her.

"You've been staring at that ring for ten minutes," he said.

Elara smiled faintly.

"I'm making sure it's real."

He stepped closer, sliding his arms gently around her waist.

"It's real."

She leaned back slightly against him.

"So this is what peace feels like."

Ares didn't answer immediately.

Because men like him didn't trust peace easily.

Still, for the first time in years, the tension in his shoulders had eased.

Maybe this was enough.

Maybe the war was finally over.

Footsteps suddenly echoed behind them.

Fast.

Urgent.

Ares turned instantly.

Luca stepped onto the terrace.

And something was wrong.

Very wrong.

His face looked pale.

"Ares," Luca said.

His voice was tight.

"We need to talk."

Elara immediately sensed the shift in the air.

Ares' eyes narrowed.

"Now?"

"Yes."

The single word carried weight.

Ares looked at Elara briefly.

"Give us a minute."

She nodded slowly and stepped a few feet away, though her attention never left them.

Ares turned back to Luca.

"What happened?"

Luca pulled out his phone.

"I received a call."

"From who?"

"Unknown number."

Ares didn't react.

Calls didn't scare him.

But Luca's expression did.

"What did they say?"

Luca hesitated.

Then he spoke quietly.

"They said the past isn't buried."

Silence settled between them.

Cold and heavy.

Ares' eyes darkened.

"That's not very creative."

"There's more."

"Go on."

Luca swallowed slightly.

"They mentioned Milan."

That got Ares' attention.

"They said you thought the war ended six months ago."

The wind moved across the lake.

For a moment, Ares said nothing.

Then his voice turned dangerously calm.

"Trace the number."

"I already tried."

"And?"

"It doesn't exist."

Ares' jaw tightened slightly.

Someone had gone through a lot of effort to hide themselves.

Which meant one thing.

They were powerful.

Across the terrace, Elara watched them carefully.

She could read Ares better than anyone now.

And she knew that look.

Something had changed.

She walked toward them.

"What happened?"

Ares looked at her for a moment.

Then he answered honestly.

"Someone is reminding me that enemies don't disappear."

"Who?"

"That's the problem."

Luca spoke again.

"The caller also said something else."

Ares glanced at him.

"What."

Luca's voice lowered.

"They said… 'Tell Ares Valentino the devil's empire was never the real target.'"

The words hung in the air.

Elara frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Ares looked out toward the dark lake again.

His mind was already moving.

Calculating.

Planning.

War instincts returning.

"It means," he said quietly,

"someone has been playing a much longer game."

The calm night suddenly felt different.

Like the silence before a storm.

Ares reached for Elara's hand, intertwining their fingers.

Not out of fear.

Out of certainty.

"If someone wants to step out of the shadows," he said,

"they better be ready for what comes next."

Elara met his gaze without hesitation.

"I didn't survive all this just to run from another war."

A faint smile touched Ares' lips.

"That's why you belong beside me."

Luca looked between them.

"Should I activate the network?"

Ares' eyes hardened.

"Yes."

The lake remained peaceful.

The world still believed the Valentino empire had won.

But somewhere in the darkness—

someone was watching.

Waiting.

And the devil had just realized

the war might never have truly ended.

Somewhere in the world…

a man watched the Valentino estate through a silent screen.

He smiled slowly.

"Now the real game begins."

To be continued…
