Chapter 56 - 58. The Shadow Inside

The red emergency lights painted the long corridors of the Valentino estate in a deep crimson glow.

Everything felt different.

The silence was heavier.

The air colder.

Ares Valentino walked forward slowly, his footsteps echoing against the marble floor. Behind him, four armed guards followed carefully, scanning every corner.

But something about this situation felt… wrong.

Too quiet.

Too controlled.

Ares suddenly stopped.

The guards halted behind him.

One of them whispered, "Sir… the motion sensors are showing movement on the second floor."

Ares' gaze lifted toward the staircase.

The shadow above seemed to move.

Not fast.

Not aggressive.

Just watching.

Waiting.

"Stay here," Ares ordered calmly.

"But sir—"

"That wasn't a request."

The guards exchanged nervous looks but obeyed.

Ares walked up the stairs alone.

Step by step.

Each movement controlled.

Each breath steady.

Halfway up the staircase, the lights flickered again.

For a moment everything went dark.

When the lights returned—

Someone was standing at the end of the hallway.

A tall figure.

Black coat.

Face hidden in shadow.

Ares stopped walking.

His voice was calm but deadly.

"You walked into the wrong house."

The figure chuckled softly.

"No… Ares."

The voice was deep.

Familiar.

Dangerously calm.

"I walked into the right one."

Ares' eyes narrowed.

Very few people spoke to him like that.

And even fewer lived long after doing it.

"Turn around," Ares said coldly.

"I'd like to see the face of the man who thinks he can break into my estate."

For a few seconds…

Nothing happened.

Then slowly—

The man stepped forward.

The red light revealed part of his face.

A sharp jawline.

Cold eyes.

And a faint scar across his eyebrow.

Ares' expression changed slightly.

Not fear.

Not shock.

Recognition.

"So…" Ares whispered.

"You're alive."

The man smiled faintly.

"You sound disappointed."

Ares studied him carefully.

"I personally watched your organization burn to the ground."

"Yes," the man replied calmly.

"You destroyed everything."

"The money."

"The network."

"The leaders."

His smile widened.

"But you made one mistake."

Ares tilted his head.

"And that is?"

The man's eyes darkened.

"You didn't make sure I was dead."

For a moment the hallway fell silent.

Then Ares laughed.

A low, dangerous sound.

"I remember now."

"The strategist of the Serpent Circle."

"The man who never fought directly."

"The ghost behind every operation."

His voice turned cold.

"Leon Voss."

The man bowed slightly.

"Nice to see your memory still works."

Downstairs, the guards suddenly shouted.

"Sir!"

A loud explosion echoed somewhere in the estate.

Glass shattered.

Alarms screamed louder.

Leon glanced toward the sound and chuckled.

"Your security team is… busy."

Ares didn't move.

"You're distracting them."

"Of course."

Leon stepped closer.

Now they stood only a few meters apart.

Two predators measuring each other.

"You didn't come here just to talk," Ares said.

"No."

Leon's voice became quiet.

"I came to see the man who ruined my life."

Ares crossed his arms.

"And?"

Leon studied him carefully.

For a long moment neither spoke.

Finally Leon sighed.

"I expected a monster."

"And what did you find?"

Leon smiled slightly.

"A bigger one."

Ares smirked.

"I'll take that as a compliment."

Suddenly—

The hallway lights went completely dark again.

This time for longer.

When the lights returned—

Leon was gone.

The corridor was empty.

Ares didn't look surprised.

Instead he walked calmly to the window nearby.

Outside, the estate gardens were filled with moving shadows.

Smoke rose from the west wing.

Leon's voice suddenly echoed through the speaker system.

"Relax, Ares."

"This was only a visit."

Ares' eyes hardened.

"What do you want?"

Leon's voice carried a faint amusement.

"I told you."

"This time we're not coming for your empire."

"Then what?"

For a moment there was silence.

Then Leon answered.

"We're coming for something much more valuable."

Ares waited.

The next words came slowly.

"Someone you care about."

Ares' jaw tightened.

Very few people in the world mattered to him.

And Leon knew it.

"Tick tock, Ares."

"You have 72 hours."

"After that…"

The system went silent.

The alarms stopped.

The lights returned to normal.

The estate suddenly felt calm again.

Too calm.

A guard ran upstairs.

"Sir! The intruders are gone!"

Ares nodded slowly.

He already knew.

Leon had never intended to stay.

This had been a message.

A warning.

Ares looked toward the night outside.

His voice was barely a whisper.

"You shouldn't have come back, Leon."

Because now…

The war that once destroyed an entire organization—

Was about to begin again.

And this time…

Neither side planned to lose.
