Chapter 36 - CHAPTER 36 — INTO THE CORRUPTED FOREST

The moment they crossed the threshold into the corrupted forest, Soren knew he had made a terrible mistake.

Not a small mistake.

Not a "forgot my lunch" mistake.

A catastrophic, life‑ruining, soul‑shattering mistake.

The air changed instantly — thick, heavy, humming with wrongness. The trees leaned inward, their branches twisted like they were whispering secrets. The ground pulsed faintly beneath his boots.

Soren whispered, "I hate this place."

The fox chirped.

Kael scanned the surroundings, spear ready. "Stay alert."

"I AM ALERT. I AM TOO ALERT. I AM ALERT TO THE POINT OF SUFFERING."

Aldric smirked. "Good."

Lira placed a calming hand on Soren's arm. "Just breathe."

"I CAN'T."

The fox nuzzled him.

Soren inhaled.

Exhaled.

Regretted everything.

The Forest Behaves Badly

They walked deeper into the corrupted zone. The trees grew denser, the shadows darker, the air colder.

Soren pointed at a tree. "That tree just moved."

Kael replied, "It's the corruption."

"I DON'T LIKE THE CORRUPTION."

Aldric snorted. "No one does."

Lira murmured, "Stay close."

The fox's tails glowed faintly, casting soft light around them.

Soren clutched him. "Buddy, please don't stop glowing. You're the only thing keeping me alive."

The fox chirped.

A branch snapped somewhere ahead.

Soren screamed.

Kael raised his spear. "Something's coming."

Aldric cracked his knuckles. "Finally."

Soren grabbed Kael's sleeve. "NO. NOT FINALLY. NEVER FINALLY. FINALLY IS BAD."

Lira summoned frost along her fingertips. "Prepare yourselves."

The fox's glow brightened.

The forest went silent.

Too silent.

Soren whispered, "I hate this place."

The First Encounter

A shape emerged from the shadows.

Not a beast.

Not a person.

Something in‑between.

A wolf‑like creature stepped into view — but its body was wrong. Its fur was patchy, its eyes glowing red, its limbs twisted like they'd been rearranged by someone who had never seen a wolf before.

Soren screamed. "NO. NO. ABSOLUTELY NOT."

Kael stepped forward. "It's corrupted."

Aldric grinned. "Good."

Soren stared at him. "WHY ARE YOU LIKE THIS."

The corrupted wolf snarled, its jaw unhinging too wide.

Lira whispered, "It's unstable."

Soren whispered, "SO AM I."

The fox leapt from his shoulder, tails glowing brighter.

Soren panicked. "BUDDY NO—COME BACK—YOU'RE SMALL—YOU'RE PRECIOUS—YOU'RE MY ONLY SOURCE OF JOY—"

The fox ignored him.

Light burst from its tails, illuminating the clearing.

The corrupted wolf recoiled, shrieking.

Kael struck.

Lira froze its legs.

Aldric smashed it with a flaming punch.

The creature dissolved into black mist.

Silence.

Soren blinked. "Did… did we win."

Kael nodded. "Yes."

Lira smiled. "Good teamwork."

Aldric smirked. "Barely."

Soren collapsed to his knees. "I hate this place."

The fox hopped onto his shoulder and chirped proudly.

The Forest Reacts

The ground trembled.

Soren froze. "No. No no no. Why is the ground doing that. The ground should not do that."

Kael frowned. "The corruption is spreading."

Lira's eyes widened. "It's reacting to us."

Aldric cracked his knuckles. "Let it."

Soren grabbed his arm. "STOP INVITING DANGER."

The fox's glow flickered.

Soren panicked. "NO. NO FLICKERING. YOU'RE NOT ALLOWED TO FLICKER."

The fox chirped weakly.

Kael stepped closer. "It's sensing something."

Lira nodded. "Something ahead."

Aldric grinned. "Good."

Soren screamed. "STOP SAYING GOOD."

The forest pulsed again — a deep, resonant thrum that vibrated through the ground and up Soren's spine.

He shivered. "I hate this place."

Kael pointed forward. "We move."

Soren whispered, "I don't want to move."

"You have to."

"I CAN'T."

"You can."

"I WON'T."

"You will."

Aldric muttered, "Both of you stop."

Lira smiled softly. "We're with you."

Soren groaned. "I hate this place."

The fox nuzzled him.

Soren sighed. "Okay. Fine. Let's go die."

Kael corrected him. "Let's go find the source."

Soren groaned louder. "Same thing."

And the four of them pushed deeper into the corrupted forest — toward whatever was waiting for them.

Something watching.

Something waiting.

Something wrong.
