Chapter 13 - The Reverse Hunt

When the forest becomes a battlefield… only the one who knows it survives.

Before dawn touched the treetops, Ryan Harper had already put on his leather jacket and packed his bag.

He didn't speak much.

He shook Jack Harper's hand firmly.

A long look between two men who understood this was not an ordinary departure.

Jack said quietly:

"Don't look back."

Ryan nodded.

Margaret Harper embraced the young man she had raised like a son.

"Come back… when you can."

He didn't promise anything.

He walked upstairs.

Opened Amy Harper's door softly.

She was asleep, her arm wrapped around her old doll.

He sat on the edge of the bed.

Brushed a strand of hair from her forehead.

Whispered:

"You're stronger than you think."

He kissed her forehead.

Left without a sound.

He mounted his horse and rode toward the depths of the forest.

The air was cold.

Humidity thick.

He felt it.

That old sensation.

Being watched.

It wasn't a sound.

Not a visible movement.

It was a shift in the silence.

After nearly two miles, he reached rough terrain.

He stopped the horse.

Patted its neck.

"Go."

A light slap to its flank.

The horse bolted back toward the farm.

The place Ryan reached wasn't suitable for animals.

Or vehicles.

It was suitable for him.

He moved lightly between the trees.

His fingers brushing points he had memorized years ago.

A nearly invisible wire.

A tilted branch.

A stone placed at an unnatural angle.

He had prepared this path long ago.

Behind him

They were no longer hiding.

More than ten men.

Light tactical gear.

Non-lethal weapons.

Taser rounds.

Tranquilizer darts.

Rapid-deploy nets.

Orders were clear:

"We want him alive."

One spoke into his comm:

"Target moving north. Do not fire without command."

Ryan smiled faintly as he passed a certain tree.

One more step

A soft click.

Then

One of the pursuers collapsed, laughing.

Hysterical.

Uncontrolled.

He dropped his weapon.

Rolled on the ground clutching his face.

"What the hell is wrong with him?!"

A small dart protruded from his neck.

A serum triggering extreme dopamine flooding.

He laughed

Until he couldn't stand.

They faltered.

But pushed forward.

Another stepped on a hidden wire near a tree trunk.

A burst of vapor detonated directly into his face.

He inhaled.

Froze.

His pupils widened.

"No… no… no…"

He stumbled backward.

Then sank to the ground.

Crying.

Absolute terror.

Complete psychological paralysis.

Their leader shouted:

"Keep moving!"

A third man passed another trunk.

Nothing visible happened.

But several steps later

He stopped.

His body began to tremble violently.

The temperature was mild.

Yet his teeth chattered uncontrollably.

He pulled on his jacket.

It didn't help.

He curled inward as if trapped in a blizzard.

Neural thermal response disruption.

Sensory confusion.

A fourth advanced faster.

"Enough games!"

He fired a random taser round into the trees.

Before he could take another step

A small projectile struck his shoulder.

Not lethal.

Not tranquilizing.

Illusive.

He began screaming.

"They're here! Behind you! Above you!"

He pointed at empty air.

Seeing shadows.

Phantoms.

Men who weren't there.

A limited hallucinogenic compound.

The forest had turned against them.

Yet they did not retreat.

Six remained.

More disciplined.

They tightened formation.

Closed distance.

Ryan felt it.

Checked his pockets.

Not much left.

Two traps.

And the tree line was thinning.

Ahead

Light.

The edge of the forest.

If he reached open ground

He'd be exposed.

He ran.

Branches struck his shoulders.

His breathing sharpened.

Footsteps behind him.

"Closing in!"

He burst from the trees onto a dirt road at the forest's edge.

Ran.

Two steps.

Three

A black SUV screeched to a stop in front of him.

Doors flying open.

No time.

A shot.

Heat pierced through him.

He collapsed.

Not lethal pain.

A sudden weight.

Paralysis.

He tried to move.

Couldn't.

A man approached quickly.

Face unclear.

He said in a low voice:

"Finally."

Ryan was lifted into the vehicle.

Doors slammed shut.

Just before consciousness slipped away

He heard another gunshot.

Not aimed at him.

Behind him.

A distant scream.

Then

Silence.

The SUV accelerated.

And the forest…

returned to stillness.
