"Daisy, can we leave soon?"

"Blake, what's the rush? It's only eight o'clock. The night's just getting started. Why bail now?"

"But—"

Blake looked torn. On one hand, she hated the loud, chaotic vibe of nightclubs. On the other, she'd just called Lawson, hoping for a romantic, sweet night with her boyfriend.

After being under her insanely controlling father Ray Gaines's watch for nearly half a month, he finally seemed to have backed off.

So Blake was dying to see Lawson and make up for all the lost time.

"Hic! Blake, I just got dumped. Can't you keep me company?"

Daisy put on her best pitiful face, like a sad little puppy about to be abandoned, staring at Blake with big, watery eyes.

Blake hesitated. She didn't have many close friends at school, and Daisy was one of the few she could actually talk to, so she didn't know what to do.

"But I already made plans with my boyfriend—"

"What? You have a boyfriend? How did I not know?!"

Daisy had already knocked back plenty of low-alcohol liqueur, and the buzz was hitting hard.

Fueled by drunk emotions, the second she heard Blake had a boyfriend, she grabbed her shoulders.

"Let me tell you something—you gotta watch these guys. They're always eyeing the next plate while they're eating the one in front of them. The hotter they are, the worse it gets!"

"No way?"

Influenced by Daisy, Blake couldn't stop her mind from spiraling.

Girls their age were like that, especially Blake, who was in her very first real relationship.

Deep down, Blake still felt a little insecure. She thought she wasn't good enough for Lawson.

After all, she'd always been the plain, bookish nerd type, while Lawson looked like a movie star.

Seeing Blake waver, Daisy—still riding the alcohol high—suggested a plan.

"Why don't I test him for you?"

"Test him?"

"Yeah! I'm really good at spotting players!"

Blake glanced at Daisy. Her friend had killer curves, great looks, and knew how to do flawless makeup.

Unlike Blake, who was still rocking black-rimmed glasses and casual clothes, looking more like she was there for a shift than a night out.

(Well, a proper shift, not the weird kind.)

(Daisy Louise, played by Katee Sackhoff)

Blake pulled out her phone. Daisy snatched it immediately.

"Whoa, this is your boyfriend? An Asian guy? Damn… he's hot!"

The wallpaper was a cute selfie Blake and Lawson had taken during their Santa Monica beach date.

Even buzzed, Daisy could feel the charisma radiating off the photo.

"Give it back! Daisy, you can't just grab my phone!"

"Blake, what are you scared of? Hot guys are a rare resource. Let me look for two seconds—what's the big deal?"

Hearing the shift in Daisy's tone, Blake instantly got suspicious.

"What do you mean by that?"

"Tsk tsk tsk! Looks like our Blake is really in deep! Remember what I said earlier? Don't you want to test how much he actually cares about you?"

"How are you planning to test him?"

"Simple! Call him over, then pretend you need to go to the bathroom. I'll show up and flirt with him. You can hide nearby and watch his reaction."

Blake looked torn. Part of her didn't want to doubt her boyfriend, but another part was terrified of seeing something she didn't want to see.

"Isn't that kind of… wrong?"

"Blake, are you scared? Better to find out early, while you're not too invested yet!"

Daisy leaned in closer, relentlessly pushing.

In the end, Blake caved. She picked up her phone and dialed.

"Lawson, something came up. I'm at XXX Bar. Can you come pick me up? Yeah… I'll wait for you inside."

She hung up and looked at Daisy.

"He said he'll be here in half an hour."

"Perfect! I need to get ready!"

Daisy jumped up excitedly and headed toward the bathrooms.

"Daisy, where are you going?"

"To touch up my makeup! What did you think?"

"You already look great!"

Daisy patted Blake's shoulder.

"Blake, a girl's makeup is like her outfit. Different occasions, different people—you need the right look. I'm going to do my 'man-slayer' face and adjust the clothes. Be right back!"

Those words suddenly made Blake regret everything. What if Lawson really fell for Daisy's act?

If that happened… what would she do?

While Blake sat there spiraling, Daisy was already humming and heading to the bathrooms.

At the bathroom entrance, Daisy saw the women's room door had a "Closed for Maintenance" sign and cursed under her breath.

"Seriously? Of all nights…"

No choice—the women's room was locked. She pushed open the men's room door and peeked inside.

Lucky. It looked empty.

Mustering her courage, Daisy slipped into the men's room and started redoing her makeup in front of the mirror.

First she touched up her lipstick, then drew a more seductive eyeliner, and fixed the spots where her foundation had faded.

"That should do it!"

But when she looked at her outfit in the mirror, she felt something was missing.

She'd dressed casually tonight because she was heartbroken and just hanging with a girlfriend.

Casual wasn't going to cut it for seducing a guy, so Daisy grabbed the tiny scissors from her makeup bag and quickly modified her clothes.

She cut it lower to show off more of her impressive cleavage and expose her flat stomach.

Like Blake, Daisy was blessed with serious curves—maybe that's why the two had become friends in the first place.

After all, standing next to either of them made most other girls feel invisible.

"Done!"

Daisy admired her work in the mirror and smiled, satisfied.

She was about to leave when a mean-looking middle-aged man dragged a younger guy into the men's room, scaring her.

"Hey! What the hell are you doing?"

The middle-aged man glared at her.

"Mind your own business! If you're looking for work, go somewhere else!"

He clearly thought she was a working girl—probably because of how revealing her new outfit was.

"You motherfucker—who the hell are you calling a whore?!"

Daisy's fiery personality kicked in and she cursed right back.

At that moment, the younger guy being dragged suddenly spoke up.

"Daisy?"

He actually knew her.

The middle-aged man looked at Daisy in surprise, then broke into a vicious grin.

"So you two know each other, huh?"

---

Blake sat at the table, her mind spinning with worst-case scenarios about what she'd do if Lawson actually fell for Daisy's seduction.

Should she break up with him on the spot, or forgive him?

She was so lost in thought she didn't even notice how long Daisy had been gone.

Until Lawson walked into the bar and saw Blake sitting alone.

"Blake? Why are you sitting here spacing out?"

"Ah? Lawson, when did you get here?"

Blake's visible nervousness made Lawson suspicious.

"I just got here. Let's go back to the apartment."

Blake stood up instinctively, then remembered Daisy's plan.

"Wait—I need to use the bathroom real quick."

"Is it urgent? If not, you can go when we get home."

The bar wasn't far from Caltech, so it was also close to Lawson's apartment—just a ten-minute drive.

A lot of the customers here were Caltech students.

It wasn't just Blake and Daisy.

"I'm really urgent! Lawson, just wait for me, okay?"

Blake hurried toward the bathrooms, only to run into the same problem Daisy had—the women's room was locked.

Like Daisy, she knocked on the men's room door.

"Daisy?"

No answer.

She knocked again. The men's room door opened and a guy stepped out, looking at her strangely.

"Sorry! My friend might be in there—she's a brunette. Have you seen her?"

The guy shook his head.

"I was the only one inside just now."

"Huh?"

Only then did Blake realize something was wrong. She quickly pulled out her phone and dialed Daisy's number.

She heard a phone ringing inside the men's room.

Gathering her courage, Blake stepped in and spotted Daisy's phone vibrating under the sink—definitely not normal.

Realizing something was very wrong, Blake grabbed the phone and ran back to Lawson.

"Lawson! My friend's missing!"

"Hmm? You didn't come alone? There's another friend?"

Blake bit her lip, her face a mix of panic and guilt.

"Actually… my friend just got dumped, so I came to the bar to keep her company. She said she was going to the bathroom, but now I can't find her!"

Blake still hadn't told him about Daisy's "test" plan.

"Maybe she drank too much? I'll ask the staff—someone might have seen her."

When Lawson first walked in, he'd noticed most of the bouncers and staff were Italian.

Clearly this was Bonanno turf. He just didn't know whose bar it was.

Lawson found the nearest bouncer.

"Hey, brother, can you help me out?"

He dropped the code phrase and flashed the secret hand signal. The bouncer finally responded.

"Who are you with?"

"I'm with Black Sonny. Just got made."

The bouncer nodded. Lawson's Asian face looked a little out of place, but the code and signal were legit.

"What do you need?"

"My female friend disappeared inside the bar. I want to know if anyone saw her."

"What does she look like?"

Blake described Daisy's appearance and outfit. The bouncer radioed his colleagues. His expression immediately turned strange.

Lawson caught it right away.

"Something wrong?"

"We haven't seen your friend."

Lawson was certain the guy was lying. His colleagues had definitely seen Daisy—they just weren't saying why.

"Hey, you're not blowing me off because I'm new, are you? Want me to call Black Sonny?"

Lawson pulled out his phone.

If Black Sonny actually showed up, things would get ugly. The bouncer immediately tried to stop him.

Lawson was now positive something was off. He shoved the bouncer aside and headed for the exit to make the call.

At that moment, a manager-type guy walked over.

"What's going on here?"

"Boss, this guy's causing trouble!"

The bouncer tried to flip the script.

"My friend disappeared in your bar. Shouldn't I ask you about it? And I'm one of you!"

"One of us?"

The bouncer whispered something in the manager's ear. The manager's face quickly changed to a smile.

"Friend, it's a small thing. Your friend probably just left early. No need to make a scene."

The manager was clearly stalling. Lawson wasn't buying it.

He dialed Black Sonny on speaker so everyone could hear.

"Mr. Lawson, calling so late—what's up?"

The way Black Sonny called him "Mr. Lawson" shocked the manager.

In the Mafia, only lower ranks called higher ranks "Mr." Same-level guys might do it politely, but this meant Lawson was at least equal to Black Sonny.

Yet Lawson had claimed he'd just been made.

"Sonny, I ran into trouble at a place called Inferno Bar in San Gabriel."

"Inferno Bar? That's family turf, right? Pretty sure it belongs to Antonio Costa. What happened?"

Lawson gave a quick rundown. Black Sonny was silent for a moment, then spoke.

"Let me talk to the guy in charge there."

Lawson handed his phone to the manager. The man took it with a sour face.

"Friend, who am I speaking to?"

"Russo."

"Fabio Russo? Do me a solid—this is Mr. Lawson, Mrs. Bonanno's advisor. Don't make this ugly!"

"I understand. But what happened tonight stays quiet."

"Of course. We're family—I know how to handle it."

Fabio Russo hung up and handed the phone back.

"She should be in the back alley. This has nothing to do with the bar."

The second half of that sentence sounded suspiciously like a cover-up.

Lawson didn't argue. Finding Daisy was more important right now.

The fastest way to the back alley was through the staff-only rear door—another clue that the bar's people were involved.

Lawson led Blake out the back door and into the alley.

They immediately heard the sound of fists hitting flesh.

Blake's face went pale with worry.

"Is someone beating up Daisy?!"

Lawson could just make out the shadow of a man hitting someone against the wall. He rushed forward and shouted:

"Let go of that girl!"
