Chapter 144 - Chapter 144: The Aura of Champions

The exact moment Shane Carter's shot hit the back of the net, La Rosaleda fell into a suffocating silence.

Both sets of fans stared at the pitch in complete disbelief, as if the laws of football had been temporarily suspended.

On the touchline, Diego Simeone buried his face in his hands.

Even though he had personally approved the insane tactical gamble, seeing the miracle actually unfold left him stunned.

"My God…" the Argentine manager whispered into his palms.

A few yards away, Manuel Pellegrini stood frozen in place.

Three goals up. Playing with an extra man for most of the match.

And they had been completely dismantled.

"This cursed sport…" Pellegrini muttered blankly.

In the away end, the traveling Atlético supporters finally broke the silence, erupting into a deafening roar of pure triumph.

On the pitch, the Atlético players snapped out of their shock.

Antoine Griezmann sprinted toward Shane like a missile, screaming incoherently. He didn't have words — it was pure, primal joy.

Fernando Torres, still in his substitute bib, broke protocol and ran onto the pitch. He grabbed Shane and lifted him into the air.

"You absolute madman! You beautiful, terrifying madman!" Torres roared.

The rest of the squad swarmed the penalty area, creating a massive, chaotic pile-up.

"We actually did it!"

"Unbelievable!"

"My God…"

They vented their emotional exhaustion in every way possible, using the shell-shocked expressions of the Málaga defenders as the perfect backdrop.

...

There were exactly two minutes of stoppage time left.

Mathematically, Málaga should have launched a desperate all-out attack to try and salvage a point.

But psychologically, they were broken.

They could barely string three passes together before aimlessly kicking the ball out of play. Every Málaga player was in a state of heavy cognitive dissonance, simply waiting for the final whistle to end the nightmare.

Peep! Peep! Peeeeeeep!

The moment the referee blew the final whistle, the familiar crystalline chime echoed in Shane's mind.

[DING! Match concluded. Initiating reward calculation...]

[DING! Congratulations! You have acquired a Passive Skill: Heart of the Comeback!]

[Heart of the Comeback: When operating in a state of severe adversity or numerical disadvantage, your overall physiological and cognitive attributes will receive a massive, temporary enhancement.]

Shane read the description and gave a wry, slightly annoyed smile.

If I had the choice, I would never willingly be in that situation again.

Pulling off a historic comeback was intoxicating, but the emotional and physical toll of surviving the initial collapse was something he had no desire to repeat often.

Around him, his teammates were celebrating on the La Rosaleda pitch as if they had just won the Champions League.

...

In the post-match mixed zone, the Atlético players were still running on pure adrenaline.

"Yes, it's a historic comeback!" captain Gabi told the microphones with a huge smile. "This victory completely changes our mentality. It proves that no matter how bad the situation gets, we have the ability to fight back!"

Fernando Torres echoed the feeling. "The confidence this gives us is immeasurable."

When asked about the tactical shift at half-time, Antoine Griezmann didn't hesitate.

"You want the truth? It's because of Shane. He took control of the dressing room at half-time. He diagnosed exactly what went wrong and dictated the entire second half with pure individual brilliance!"

Raúl García nodded in agreement. "He's the undisputed leader of this team — both in the dressing room and on the pitch."

The quotes spread like wildfire across the global media.

Sports journalists didn't even need to write long editorials. They simply published the raw player quotes. The story wrote itself.

...

As the undisputed Man of the Match, Shane was eventually dragged in front of the press.

"Antoine Griezmann said you personally delivered the half-time team talk that inspired the comeback…" a Spanish reporter asked.

Shane offered a smooth, diplomatic smile. "The manager and I addressed the squad together."

He understood club politics well. Publicly claiming full tactical control over Diego Simeone would be terrible PR.

"What was the core message?"

Shane blinked innocently. "I simply reminded them that mental surrender is the only real defeat."

The press corps collectively rolled their eyes. No one bought the polished answer.

A simple motivational speech didn't turn a broken, ten-man team into a tactical machine.

But unless someone leaked the details of Shane's whiteboard session, the full truth would stay locked inside the dressing room.

The dressing room was a sacred space. Leaks were rare.

Unless, of course, your manager was José Mourinho.

...

The next morning, the Spanish media was in absolute shock.

[MARCA]: ATLÉTICO MADRID RISE FROM THE ABYSS! After the chaos of El Clásico, Diego Simeone's side remain the only unbeaten team in La Liga! Seven matches, seven wins, twenty-one points. They sit alone at the top!

Several outlets resurrected Shane's bold pre-season declaration.

"During the summer, Shane Carter publicly stated his intention to challenge for the La Liga title. At the time, many saw it as the arrogance of a talented teenager. But looking at their current campaign… who's laughing now?"

"Producing a comeback of this magnitude under such extreme conditions proves one undeniable fact: Atlético Madrid genuinely possesses the aura of champions."

...

The phrase "Aura of Champions" dominated the headlines.

The logic was simple. If Atlético could survive going three goals down with ten men, what level of adversity could actually break them?

Over a long thirty-eight-game season, a team might face that kind of nightmare once or twice at most.

If they could overcome the worst-case scenario, handling a normal 1-0 deficit would feel like routine.

This victory dramatically boosted the squad's mental resilience.

Naturally, the Catalan media pushed back hard.

[Mundo Deportivo]: Aura of Champions? Please. This manufactured hype ignores the fact that Atlético have yet to face a true elite opponent.

In other words, until they played Barcelona, the Catalan press refused to take them seriously as title contenders.

It was a view heavily shared by Barcelona fans.

During his press conference, Barcelona manager Tito Vilanova remained composed about the two-point deficit.

"The season is a marathon, not a sprint," Vilanova said smoothly. "Being two points behind in October means nothing. We have full confidence in our ability to reclaim the top spot."

[Sport] ran the definitive Catalan headline: Talking about title credentials in October is historically premature. The real battle for La Liga… has only just begun.
