Chapter 226 - Chapter 226: The Final... The Champions League Final!

On the touchline, the fourth official raised the board. Five minutes of stoppage time.

The moment the number went up, the Calderón erupted in boos. From both sets of fans. Dortmund supporters thought it was too short. They wished it would stretch on forever until their team scored. Atlético fans thought it was far too long. Five minutes? Why five? They wanted the match to end right now.

But those five minutes felt like a signal. A signal that drove Dortmund into desperation.

Lewandowski dropped deep to receive the ball. The Polish striker was the definition of a modern center-forward. In the past, strikers were simpler. Either target men, big, strong, dominant in the air. Or poachers, ghosting into space, finishing chances. Master one trait, and you could survive. But modern football demanded everything. Strength. Technique. Movement. Link-up play. The complete package.

Lewandowski was exactly that.

He shielded the ball, feinted wide, then suddenly flicked it with his heel, spun, and unleashed a long-range shot. The ball arced toward goal.

At the critical moment, Miranda leapt.

Bang.

The ball smashed into his forehead and popped upward. Dazed, vision blurred, he still reacted instinctively. One swing of his leg, clear it high. Buy time. Let the defense reset.

As Miranda turned, still seeing double, he spotted two figures charging toward the dropping ball.

"Lewandowski's shot, blocked by Miranda's face... he clears."

The commentator hadn't even finished. The clearance didn't travel far. It dropped just outside the penalty area.

Shane Carter and Lewandowski exploded toward it at the same time. They collided mid-run. On paper, Lewandowski had the advantage. Height, frame, strength. His first instinct was to bully Shane off the ball.

But instead, he was the one pushed aside.

Lewandowski grabbed Shane's shoulder. Shane immediately returned the grip. Both tried to pin each other down, denying the jump.

Then Lewandowski felt it. Pressure. Overwhelming. He was forced downward, bent at the waist, unable to rise.

In the next instant, the pressure vanished. Shane had already leapt. A quick flick of the head. Then he landed and exploded forward. Power surged through his legs as he drove the ball ahead.

Lewandowski stood there, stunned.

This guy... his strength...

Shane burst past midfield with the ball at his feet.

"Counterattack. Atlético Madrid are on the break."

The Calderón ignited.

"Stop him," Klopp shouted, panic creeping in.

Dortmund had thrown everything forward. Even Subotić had pushed up like a striker. Both fullbacks were high. Now only Gündoğan and Hummels remained at the back.

Costa had already been substituted. Mario Suárez was on. Up front, only Torres remained.

But it didn't matter. Because Dortmund only had two defenders left.

Torres dropped deeper. Hummels stuck tight to him. Everyone knew what was coming. Two-on-two. One player draws the defense, the other attacks.

And Shane Carter, one-on-one? There was no need to ask.

A quick one-two. A forward pass. A return ball. Shane accelerated. Gündoğan chased desperately, but his legs were gone. He couldn't catch him. It was like chasing a machine that never ran out of energy. All he could do was watch Shane disappear.

Now only one man stood in the way. Weidenfeller.

"Atlético on the counter. Shane through to Torres. Torres lays it off. One-two. Shane. Gündoğan can't keep up. SHANE. SHANE. SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU."

Mario's voice exploded.

Shane caught up to the ball and drove straight into the box.

"He's through. One-on-one. What will he do? Weidenfeller comes out. He has to. Closing the angle. Shane looks up. Chip? No. No. He doesn't shoot. Body feint. Weidenfeller commits. Shane cuts inside. He's past him. He's past him. No one left. No one can stop him now. No one. Empty net. EMPTY NET. SHANE. Side-foot finish. A MAGNIFICENT SIDE-FOOT FINISH. GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL."

The words poured out like gunfire. Every detail. Every second.

As the ball crossed the line, Shane turned, arms outstretched, roaring as he sprinted toward the sideline.

"Yesssss."

The Calderón exploded.

"Shane Carter. Shane Carter. SHANE CARTER."

"My God, him again."

"It's in."

"He's killed the game. He's completely killed it."

"Shane Carter finishes Dortmund."

"Incredible. Unbelievable. In this moment, nothing else matters."

"Look at the bench. Look at the stands. This is a celebration of victory."

Even before the final whistle, everyone knew. It was over. That goal had crushed any hope of a comeback.

Simeone sprinted out of the technical area and dropped into a knee slide. The bench emptied. The touchline became a storm of celebration.

Klopp lowered his head. He knew. Dortmund's dream was over.

In the stands, Atlético fans sang, danced, screamed. Some laughed. Some cried.

Atlético Madrid were going to the Champions League final.

Before this season, who would have imagined it? Who would have dared?

And now it was real.

On the pitch, Torres dropped to his knees, fists clenched, head thrown back in a roar, then collapsed forward, shoulders shaking. The former captain was crying. A childhood dream. And now, at the twilight of his career, it was within reach.

"4-2. Atlético Madrid seal it. They are heading to the Champions League final. And their opponent, Bayern Munich, the very team they faced twice in the group stage."
