Chapter 67 - mine

Chapter: Don't Say Mine If You Don't Mean It

(Keif's POV)

I knew the moment Yuri smiled like that… peace was over.

It was lunch break. The whole group was near the basketball court. Jay was sitting on the low wall, pretending to listen to Cin and Felix argue about something stupid.

Pretending.

Because her eyes kept drifting toward me.

And everyone noticed.

Yuri suddenly clapped his hands dramatically.

"Ladies and gentlemen… welcome to today's special event."

Jay narrowed her eyes. "What nonsense now?"

Blaster grinned. "The Jealousy Challenge."

Jay immediately scoffed. "I'm not jealous."

All of us replied at the same time, "Sure."

She glared.

And I should have stopped it.

But I didn't.

Because I wanted to see how far she'd go.

Phase One: The Setup

Calix casually leaned against me. "Bro, Kiara from Section B was asking about you."

I didn't react.

But Jay's shoulders stiffened.

Kiara.

She was smart. Pretty. Confident.

And apparently, today's weapon.

Felix leaned toward Jay. "You okay?"

"I don't care," she replied too quickly.

Lie.

Yuri raised his voice deliberately. "Keif, she said you explain math really well."

Blaster added, "And that you're kind."

Cin whispered loudly, "And handsome."

The boys laughed.

Jay didn't.

Her fingers tightened around the edge of the wall she was sitting on.

I exhaled slowly. "Stop."

"Why?" Yuri smirked. "You nervous?"

Before I could answer, Kiara herself walked toward us — probably dragged into this without knowing.

She smiled politely. "Hey, Keif."

Jay's jaw tightened.

I noticed.

Of course I noticed.

Kiara continued, "I wanted to ask about the calculus assignment."

I kept my tone neutral. "You can ask."

We were standing normally.

Not close.

Not inappropriate.

But Jay saw something else.

She saw distance.

And she didn't like it.

Phase Two: The Break

"MARK KEIFER WATSON."

The air froze.

Again.

Every single time she says my full name, it hits differently.

I turned slowly.

Jay was standing there, eyes blazing.

Her breathing slightly uneven.

Her pride already gone.

"Come here. Now."

Kiara blinked in confusion.

The boys were holding their laughter like it was oxygen.

I walked toward Jay calmly.

"You're losing the challenge," I murmured quietly.

"I don't care."

"You look jealous."

"I am."

That made me pause.

Not denial.

Not shouting.

Just honesty.

The boys went silent.

I stepped closer.

"Of what?"

Her voice dropped lower.

"Of them acting like they can take you."

My chest tightened.

Take me.

As if I'm something to be claimed.

Or protected.

Or kept.

"You think I'll go?" I asked softly.

She didn't answer immediately.

And that hesitation hurt more than anger.

"I don't know," she whispered.

That was it.

The challenge stopped being funny.

Because now it wasn't teasing.

It was fear.

Phase Three: No More Games

I moved closer.

Close enough that our shoes almost touched.

"You don't trust me?"

She looked up immediately. "It's not that."

"Then what?"

Her fingers trembled slightly.

"I don't like sharing."

There it was.

Raw.

Unfiltered.

I swallowed.

"Sharing what?"

She stared at me.

"You."

The boys behind us forgot how to breathe.

Yuri slowly backed up.

Cin grabbed Felix's arm like this was cinema.

My heart was pounding dangerously now.

"You act like I'm yours," I said quietly.

She didn't deny it.

Her chin lifted stubbornly.

"Maybe you are."

The words hit me harder than I expected.

I took one slow step forward.

She didn't move back.

My hand hovered near her waist — not touching yet.

"If I'm yours," I murmured, "why are you scared?"

Her voice cracked slightly. "Because you're not saying it."

That did something to me.

She wasn't scared of Kiara.

She was scared of uncertainty.

I gently placed my hand at her waist.

Soft.

Careful.

Intentional.

She inhaled sharply but didn't move away.

"You want me to say it?" I asked.

She nodded once.

Barely.

The world felt smaller.

The boys didn't exist.

Kiara didn't exist.

Nothing existed except the way she was holding onto my shirt without realizing it.

"You don't share," I whispered.

She shook her head.

"No."

"Neither do I."

Her eyes widened slightly.

I leaned closer.

Forehead almost touching hers.

"You're jealous because you think someone can take me."

"Yes."

"They can't."

"Why?"

I let the word sit at the edge of my lips.

Dangerous.

Heavy.

Real.

Because you're mine.

I wanted to say it.

I almost did.

But instead, I brushed my thumb slightly against her waist and said it softer.

"I don't belong anywhere I'm not pulled."

Her voice trembled. "And where are you pulled?"

I lowered my head just enough for our foreheads to touch.

Gentle.

Slow.

Electric.

"Toward you."

Her grip on my shirt tightened.

"And Kiara?" she asked softly.

I didn't even look back.

"She was never a threat."

The boys behind us were silent — not teasing anymore.

Just watching something shift.

She exhaled shakily.

"So you're not leaving?"

I smiled faintly.

"I don't leave where I'm wanted."

Her voice dropped to a whisper.

"You're wanted."

That was it.

That was the breaking point.

I moved slightly closer, my arm sliding around her waist properly this time.

Secure.

Not possessive.

But certain.

"You don't have to scream my full name to keep me," I said quietly.

She looked up.

"What if I want to?"

I almost laughed.

"You only say it when you're angry."

"Or when I'm scared."

My hand tightened slightly at that.

"You don't need to be scared."

"Then say it."

There it was.

The demand.

Soft.

Vulnerable.

Brave.

I leaned closer, lips near her ear.

"I don't share what feels like mine."

Her breath hitched.

"And you?" I asked.

Her reply came instantly.

"I don't either."

Footsteps.

Yuri whispering dramatically, "They forgot we're alive."

Blaster muttering, "Bro almost confessed."

Cin fanning himself. "Jealousy challenge ended successfully."

We slowly stepped apart.

But not completely.

My hand was still around her waist.

And she didn't remove it.

Kiara quietly walked away, understanding without needing words.

The challenge was over.

But something else had begun.

She didn't shout my full name again that day.

She didn't need to.

Because when she looked at me now…

There was no fear.

Only certainty.

And when I looked at her—

I didn't say "mine."

But the way I held her?

Said it anyway.
