[Sleep]
Simply put, this was a spell that allowed a person to fall asleep rapidly—a true blessing for insomniacs. Its primary advantage was its ability to guide the target directly into deep sleep. Not only was the sleep quality exceptional, but it also allowed for mental recovery in a very short amount of time.
Casting magic was an incredibly taxing endeavor for the mind. If Calca wanted to initiate a high-intensity training regimen, her current physical body would be left drowsy and exhausted after just one morning of exercise. It reminded her of her life before the age of three, when her brain would sound an alarm and force her into immediate slumber the moment she tried to think too deeply about anything.
In fact, the reason Calca was so pampered—aside from being the youngest—was linked to this abnormal lethargy during her infancy. To the Holy King and Queen, it suggested a potential developmental issue in her brain. Consequently, Calca had been subjected to constant check-ups by priests and frequent applications of [Light Heal].
[Light Heal] essentially utilized gentle positive energy to nourish the body and promote repair. The principle was similar to using chakra to stimulate cells, but far milder. If one's physical constitution was strong enough (like a Lizardman), it could even restore severed limbs. Calca even suspected that her "Magic Affinity" talent had slowly gestated because her developing body had been surrounded by so much positive energy during her early years.
However, [Light Heal] could only alleviate physical fatigue; it couldn't directly resolve mental exhaustion. Calca only had access to one "free" healing spell a day, which was nowhere near enough for a rigorous training schedule. To ensure her mental and physical health—and to make sure she didn't literally work herself to death before the Sorcerer King arrived—she had set her sights on [Sleep].
As long as she could cast it to enter deep sleep, this highly efficient recovery method was practically tailor-made for her.
Calca pulled her wandering thoughts back to the present and listened intently to Mariana's instruction. The Great Priestess moved her finger like a pen, drawing a pale blue disc with perfect symmetry in the air, followed by a larger outer ring to serve as the base. Mariana's fingers moved in a rapid blur, etching various winding, serpentine curves within the circle.
"These winding patterns are, for the time being, what we call Magic Runes," Mariana explained.
Calca stared at the strokes. "Why 'for the time being'?"
"Because to this day, no one has fully deciphered the meaning of these patterns. They have meanings individually, yet they create entirely new meanings when layered together. They are divided into fixed zones with perfect balance, never interfering with one another. Missing a section simply results in the spell failing; there are no other negative consequences. Most people replicate them by intuition, so we tentatively call them runes."
As Mariana's finger completed the final large circle, the previously static magic circle began to rotate slowly, resembling a high-precision mechanical instrument.
Calca stared at the hollowed-out patterns. As a former "corporate drone" in her previous life, she was suddenly hit by a powerful sense of déjà vu. These non-interfering, clearly defined functional patterns... why did they sound so much like modular design in computer programming?
The young girl instinctively extended her fingertip, allowing her mana to flow. It felt like she was performing rehabilitation exercises; she traced the lines slowly at first, but her speed increased rapidly as she grew accustomed to the flow. A pale blue light flickered in the classroom, drawing the attention of everyone present.
When Calca finished the final stroke, the entire classroom fell into a silence so profound it was as if everyone's hearts had collectively stopped.
A moment later, her magic circle—just like Mariana's—began to spin steadily.
