Chapter 7 - The Forgotten Forest

Dymas rode east through the night. The black stallion moved steady under him, hooves quiet on the dirt road. The cloak he had taken from the dead guard flapped behind his shoulders. It was rough wool, dark gray, nothing fancy, but it hid the torn royal tunic and the bloodstains. The waterskin bounced against his hip. The dried meat stayed wrapped in the saddlebag. He ate little. Hunger could wait. Points could not.

The road curved around low hills. The Forgotten Forest loomed on his right, a dark wall of trees that stretched for miles. He kept it close but stayed on the road. Open ground meant faster travel. Trees meant more beasts. More beasts meant more points.

His body settled into the rhythm of the ride. Qi Condensation Layer 2 felt stable now. The minor regeneration worked on the small scrapes from the last fight. Cuts closed. Bruises vanished. His black hair whipped in the wind, strands sticking to his forehead with sweat. His gray scanned the darkness ahead, sharp and alert.

He checked the screen every few minutes.

Current realm progress: Qi Condensation Layer 2 – 45%

Current points: 26,597

The kills from the guards had pushed him forward. The curse lines under his skin were faint now, almost invisible unless he looked close. The system had turned the poison in his blood into something useful. Every time he felt a faint twinge in his veins, points ticked up in the background.

Small. Constant. Like breathing.

Dawn was close. He needed cover before full light. Palace riders would come again. More posters. More bounties.

He turned the horse off the road toward the forest edge. A narrow game trail cut into the trees. He dismounted and led the stallion by the reins. The qi here was thicker again, wild and untamed.

He found a small hollow between three large oaks. He tied the horse to a low branch and sat against a trunk. The stallion snorted once, then settled.

Dymas closed his eyes. The Auto-Cultivation Module pulled qi from the forest air. Steady. Relentless. He let it run while he rested. His body needed the break. Not sleep. Just stillness.

An hour passed. The sky turned gray.

A sound woke him. Not the horse. Something else.

Footsteps.

He opened his eyes. No movement. He listened.

The footsteps stopped. Then started again. Closer.

Dymas stood slowly. Spear in hand. Axe at his belt.

A figure stepped out from the trees twenty paces away.

A woman. Tall and slender. White robe with faint frost patterns along the sleeves. Hair long and silver-platinum, tied high but loose strands falling to her waist. Eyes blue like glacier ice. Face sharp, beautiful in a cold way. She carried a thin sword at her hip.

Seraphina Voss.

Dymas recognized her at once. Disciple of the Frostveil Sect. One of the young mistresses who had watched his public disgrace from the stands. She had not laughed like the others. She had just watched. Silent. Unreadable.

She stopped when she saw him.

"You," she said. Voice clear. Cold. "The cursed prince. They said you were dead by now."

Dymas kept the spear low. Not raised. Not yet.

"They were wrong."

Her eyes narrowed. She looked him over. The torn clothes. The bloodstains. The spear still wet from earlier kills.

"You escaped the palace. Killed guards. And now you hide in the forest like a rat."

Dymas shrugged. "Better than dying in a courtyard."

Seraphina stepped closer. Her robe did not rustle. Her boots made no sound on the leaves. Cultivator grace. Qi Condensation Layer 5 or 6. Stronger than him. For now.

"I was hunting a frost lynx. It fled this way. I did not expect to find trash instead."

Dymas met her gaze.

"I'm not trash anymore."

She tilted her head. A faint frost formed on her fingertips. The air around her cooled.

"Prove it."

She moved.

Her sword cleared the sheath in a flash of silver. Ice qi gathered along the blade. She slashed once. A crescent of frost qi flew toward him.

Dymas activated Shadow Step. He blurred left. The frost crescent hit the tree behind him. Bark froze solid and cracked.

He reappeared five paces to her side. Spear thrust forward.

She spun. Sword met spear. Metal rang. Ice spread along his weapon. Cold burned his hands.

He pulled back. The spear tip was coated in thin frost.

Seraphina did not smile. She attacked again. Three quick slashes. Each one trailed frost qi.

Dymas blocked the first. Dodged the second. The third grazed his shoulder. Cold seared through the tunic. Skin numbed.

Damage received: +280 Grind Points

He gritted his teeth. The pain sharpened his focus.

He countered. Axe in his off-hand. He swung low.

She jumped back. Light on her feet. Sword came down in a vertical cut.

Dymas rolled under it. Came up inside her guard. Spear jabbed at her ribs.

She twisted. The point missed by inches. Her elbow struck his jaw.

Pain flared.

Damage received: +220 Grind Points

He staggered back. Blood in his mouth again.

Seraphina lowered her sword slightly. Breathing even.

"You fight better than you look. But you are still weak."

Dymas wiped his mouth. He felt the curse stir. Gray lines flickered under his skin. The system converted the cold damage.

Cursed Qi Absorber: +340 Grind Points from frost qi

He smiled. Small. Sharp.

"Not for long."

She raised an eyebrow. Frost gathered around her again.

Before she could strike, a low roar echoed through the trees.

Both turned.

A large shape burst from the underbrush. Frost lynx. White fur, blue eyes and claws like ice daggers. Qi Condensation Layer 4. Bigger than the wolves. Faster.

It had circled back. Hunting both of them now.

The lynx lunged at Seraphina first.

She slashed. Frost qi met claw. Sparks flew. She slid back three steps.

Dymas moved.

Shadow Step. He appeared behind the beast. Spear thrust into its flank. Basic Sword Intent pushed deep. Blood sprayed.

The lynx roared. Turned. Claws raked toward him.

Dymas dodged. Axe swing. Caught its shoulder. Bone cracked.

Seraphina attacked from the front. Sword pierced its chest.

The lynx thrashed. Claws caught her arm. Blood welled.

Dymas finished it. Spear through the eye. The beast collapsed.

Silence returned.

Seraphina stood breathing hard. A cut on her forearm bled slowly. Frost qi sealed it, but the wound stayed red.

She looked at Dymas.

"You helped."

He nodded once.

She sheathed her sword. Looked at the body. Then at him.

"You are not what they said. Not completely."

Dymas met her eyes.

"Stay out of my way, Voss. Or don't."

He turned to leave.

She spoke again.

"Wait."

He stopped.

She hesitated. First time he had seen her uncertain.

"The sects will hunt you. The empire too. You cannot run forever."

Dymas looked back over his shoulder.

"I'm not running. I'm grinding."

He walked into the trees.

Behind him, Seraphina Voss watched him go. Her blue eyes narrowed. Frost still clung to her hair.

She touched the cut on her arm. It closed slowly.

Then she turned and vanished into the opposite direction.

Dymas kept moving.

But he felt her gaze linger on his back long after she was gone.

And somewhere deeper in the forest, another presence stirred.

Amber eyes watching from the shadows.
