Chapter 36 - Eyes Everywhere

We left the stairwell, but the tension followed us.

I could feel it.

Not just from Austin—but from everything around us.

The hallway wasn't loud like before. It was… different.

Quieter.

Like people were watching without making it obvious.

I leaned closer to him slightly. "Tell me I'm not imagining this."

"You're not," he said under his breath.

"Great," I muttered. "That's exactly what I wanted to hear."

We kept walking, but slower this time.

More aware.

Every laugh down the hall felt like it could be about us. Every glance felt a second too long.

"This is getting weird," I whispered.

"It already is," Austin replied.

Before I could say anything else, someone stepped right into our path.

I stopped instantly.

Austin tensed beside me.

The guy standing in front of us looked familiar—not from earlier exactly, but close enough to set off alarms.

He smirked slightly. "Didn't think I'd see you again this soon."

Austin's voice dropped. "Move."

The guy ignored him, his eyes sliding toward me.

"And you brought her too."

I stepped forward slightly, unimpressed. "Do you mind?"

He chuckled. "Not at all. I just didn't expect you to get involved in things that don't concern you."

I folded my arms. "You'd be surprised what concerns me."

Austin shifted in front of me a little. "I said move."

The guy tilted his head. "Or what? Round two?"

My heart started picking up again.

Not fear exactly… but anticipation.

This felt like it could go bad fast.

I placed a hand lightly on Austin's arm. "Don't."

He didn't look at me. "He started it."

"And you're about to finish it," I shot back quietly.

There was a brief pause.

Then the guy laughed again. "She's the only reason you're still standing here calm."

I raised a brow. "You're giving me too much credit."

"No," he said, his smirk fading slightly. "I think I'm giving you just enough."

Austin stepped forward, his voice sharp now. "Last warning."

The tension snapped.

For a second, I really thought they were about to go at it again.

But then—

Footsteps.

Multiple.

Fast.

We all turned at the same time.

A group of students rounded the corner—loud, distracted, completely unaware of what was happening.

The moment broke.

Just like that.

The guy clicked his tongue, stepping back. "Lucky timing."

Austin didn't move.

Didn't blink.

"Yeah," the guy added, backing away slowly. "This isn't over."

Then he disappeared into the crowd.

I exhaled slowly, my hand still on Austin's arm. "Okay… I'm officially done with people saying that."

Austin let out a quiet breath, the tension in his shoulders easing just slightly.

"Same," he muttered.

I stepped in front of him now, forcing him to actually look at me. "You need to tell me what's going on."

He hesitated again.

Then shook his head lightly. "Not here."

I frowned. "Then where?"

He glanced around, clearly thinking.

"After school," he said finally.

I narrowed my eyes. "You better not disappear on me."

"I won't."

"You promise?"

His gaze softened just a little. "Yeah. I promise."

I studied him for a second… then nodded. "Fine."

But something still didn't sit right.

And I could tell—

He knew it too.

"Come on," he said, gently taking my hand again. "Let's just get through the day first."

I sighed. "At this point, I'd be surprised if the day lets us."

He smirked faintly. "Fair."

We started walking again, but this time—

It didn't feel normal anymore.

Not even close.

Because now, it wasn't just about Mary.

Or rumors.

Or random fights.

Now there were people watching.

Waiting.

And whatever this thing was…

It was getting closer.

I squeezed his hand slightly.

After school.

That's when I'd get answers.

One way or another.

Chapter 12: After the Bell

The rest of the day dragged.

Every class felt longer than usual, every minute slower than the last. I tried to focus—but it was pointless. My mind kept replaying everything… the fight, the tension, the guy in the hallway, the way Austin kept avoiding giving me real answers.

And the promise.

After school.

I tapped my pen against the desk, staring at the clock.

Tick.

Tick.

Tick.

"Can time move any slower?" I muttered under my breath.

Finally—

The bell rang.

I was out of my seat before the teacher even finished speaking, grabbing my bag and heading straight for the door.

I didn't stop until I reached the front of the school.

And there he was.

Leaning casually against the gate like nothing in the world bothered him.

I rolled my eyes as I walked up. "You're late."

He checked an imaginary watch. "I've been here for like five minutes."

"Still late."

He smirked. "You're impatient."

"I've been waiting all day," I shot back. "So yeah."

His expression shifted slightly—less teasing now.

More serious.

"Let's go somewhere else," he said.

I frowned. "Why?"

"Because I don't want half the school listening in."

Fair point.

"Okay… where?"

He hesitated for half a second. "I know a place."

That should've sounded reassuring.

Instead, it made me more curious.

But I nodded anyway. "Lead the way."

We walked in silence at first, leaving the school behind. The noise faded the farther we went, replaced by quieter streets and the occasional passing car.

I glanced at him. "You've been quiet."

"So have you."

"Because I'm waiting," I replied. "You said you'd explain."

"I will."

"Soon?"

He let out a small breath. "Soon."

I narrowed my eyes slightly. "You keep saying that."

He stopped walking.

So suddenly that I almost bumped into him.

"This isn't something I just say in the middle of the street," he said, his tone firm but not harsh. "Give me a minute."

I studied him.

Really looked this time.

He wasn't avoiding me because he didn't want to tell me.

He was choosing how to.

"Okay," I said finally.

We kept walking.

A few minutes later, we turned down a quieter path—almost hidden from the main road. It led to a small, empty area behind an old building, surrounded by tall walls and just enough shade to make it feel… private.

He stopped there.

"This good enough?" I asked.

"Yeah."

Silence fell between us.

Not awkward.

Just heavy.

I crossed my arms. "Alright. I'm listening."

He ran a hand through his hair again, pacing slightly this time.

"I used to hang around those guys," he said finally.

I blinked.

"Wait… what?"

He glanced at me. "Not like that. But… we knew each other."

"That doesn't sound reassuring."

"It's not meant to be."

I frowned. "Then what is it meant to be?"

"The truth."

I held his gaze. "Then keep going."

He exhaled slowly. "They think I owe them."

"You said that earlier," I reminded him. "Owe them what?"

Another pause.

Then—

"Money."

That caught me off guard.

"…Money?"

He nodded slightly. "Yeah."

I blinked again, trying to process that. "Why would you owe them money?"

"They helped me out once," he said. "A while ago."

"With what?"

He didn't answer immediately.

And that hesitation?

Yeah… I noticed.

"Austin."

"It doesn't matter anymore," he said quickly. "What matters is—they think I didn't pay them back."

"Did you?"

He looked at me.

Straight in the eyes.

"Yes."

I believed him.

But clearly, they didn't.

"Then why are they still coming after you?"

"Because," he said, his voice tightening slightly, "they want more."

I let out a slow breath. "Of course they do."

"They're not just going to let it go," he added.

"I figured that out when they tried to fight you twice in one day."

A small, humorless huff left him. "Yeah."

I was quiet for a second, thinking.

Then—

"So what's the plan?"

He looked at me, slightly surprised. "Plan?"

"Yeah. You don't just stand around waiting for them to keep showing up."

"I told you—I'll handle it."

I shook my head immediately. "No. You said that before, and look where we are now."

He stepped closer. "I don't want you dragged into this."

"Too late," I said again.

He sighed. "You're not letting this go, are you?"

I raised a brow. "Do I look like I am?"

A small smile tugged at his lips despite everything. "No… you don't."

"Good."

There was a pause.

Then I softened my tone just a little.

"Look… I'm not asking to fight them or anything. I just… don't want you dealing with this alone."

That hit differently.

I could tell.

He looked at me for a long second… then nodded slowly.

"Alright," he said. "We'll figure something out."

I smiled faintly. "Finally. Teamwork."

He shook his head lightly, but there was something warmer in his expression now.

"Yeah… teamwork."

For a moment, things felt steady again.

Like maybe we had some control over this.

But deep down—

I still had a feeling.

This wasn't going to be easy.

Not even close.

And whatever those guys wanted…

They weren't done yet.
