Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: Smoked Meat and Secrets

The afternoon sun slanted through the trees, casting long shadows across the abandoned building. Kael had spent the better part of the day here, far from the main academy buildings, where no one would think to look for a janitor. The building itself had been thoroughly cleaned with his magic, the dust and cobwebs erased, the floors polished, the broken furniture either repaired or replaced with items he'd salvaged from storage.

It was starting to feel like home again — the sanctuary it had been during his student days, before he'd left it behind for the life of an adventurer.

But habits from those years were hard to shake. Kael stood in the small clearing behind the building, shirtless, his axe rising and falling in a steady rhythm as he split logs for the fire pit. The physical labor was satisfying in a way that cleaning never quite managed to be. His muscles flexed with each swing, sweat glistening on his skin despite the cool afternoon air.

"You've turned this into quite the little hideaway," Elara observed from where she leaned against the back wall, watching him with a mixture of amusement and exasperation. "I remember you always hiding out here during our student days. Do you have any idea how many times I had to track you down? You made my life difficult, you know that."

Kael paused, wiping sweat from his forehead with the back of his arm. "I never asked you to find me."

"No," Elara agreed, pushing off from the wall and walking closer. "But you also didn't make it easy. And now look at this — you've not only claimed this building as your personal space, you've set up a smoking rack. That's been going for hours, by the smell of it. What are you even smoking out here?"

"Venison," Kael said, returning to his wood-chopping. "I hunted it last weekend. Adventuring habits are hard to break — always preparing preserved food, always thinking ahead."

"In the middle of the academy?" Elara raised an eyebrow. "This is starting to feel less like a school and more like your private house. Are you planning to move in here permanently?"

"Maybe," Kael said noncommittally. "It's quieter than the dorms. And I can do what I want without anyone bothering me."

He finished splitting the last log and set the axe aside, then moved to the smoking rack where the meat had been curing for hours. The rich, smoky aroma filled the clearing, making his stomach rumble slightly. He checked the meat, pleased with how it had turned out — properly smoked, tender, infused with the flavors of the wood and seasonings he'd used.

"Want to try some?" Kael asked, cutting a slice and offering it to Elara.

Elara accepted the piece, eyeing it suspiciously before taking a bite. Her eyebrows rose in surprise. "This is… actually quite good. What did you use to flavor it?"

"Salt, pepper, and applewood," Kael said, cutting more slices. "The wood gives it a distinctive taste. Want another piece?"

Elara nodded, and Kael served her a larger portion. They ate in companionable silence for a moment, the quiet of the clearing only disturbed by the crackle of the smoking fire and the distant sounds of the academy beyond the trees.

Then Kael heard it — the soft crunch of footsteps approaching through the undergrowth. He turned toward the sound, and a moment later, Seraphina emerged from the trees, her silver hair catching the afternoon light.

She stopped short when she saw them both, her eyes widening in surprise. Then her gaze shifted to Elara, and recognition dawned.

"Professor Vance?" Seraphina said, her voice polite but slightly confused. "I didn't expect to find you here."

Elara turned, studying the young woman with interest. "Lady Seraphina. What brings you to this part of the academy?"

"I was just… walking," Seraphina said vaguely, though her eyes kept darting toward Kael. "Exploring, I suppose. I hadn't realized this area was being used."

Kael caught her gaze and held it, a small smile touching his lips. "You're not here by accident, are you?"

Seraphina's flush gave her away before she could answer. "I… I wanted to see you. After what happened yesterday."

"Then come sit," Kael said, gesturing to a log near the fire pit. "I was just about to serve some food. You're welcome to join us."

Seraphina hesitated for a moment, then walked over and seated herself, arranging her skirts carefully. Elara watched the interaction with growing curiosity — this was the first time she'd seen the duke's daughter and the janitor interact, and something about their dynamic seemed… unusual.

Kael cut portions of the smoked meat for both women and handed them over. "Try it. It's better than anything you'll get in the dining hall."

Seraphina accepted the slice warily, then took a tentative bite. Her eyes widened in surprise. "This is delicious. I've never had anything like it before."

"Adventuring recipes," Kael said, cutting himself a portion. "Practical, but surprisingly good when you get the technique right."

They ate for a few moments in silence, but Elara's curiosity eventually got the better of her. She fixed Kael with a direct look, her expression searching.

"So," she said, her tone deliberately casual. "What exactly did you do to her?"

Seraphina swallowed quickly, nearly choking on her meat. Kael merely raised an eyebrow, waiting for Elara to continue.

"You know what I mean," Elara pressed. "There's something between the two of you. I can feel it. And she's sitting here, a duke's daughter, taking orders from a janitor like it's the most natural thing in the world. That's not normal behavior, Kael."

Kael considered how to answer, then shrugged. "I just showed her the ropes, so to speak. About certain things. Sexual things."

"Showed her the ropes?" Elara repeated, her tone flat. "That's your explanation? 'Showed her the ropes'?"

"It's accurate," Kael said. "I introduced her to some experiences she'd only ever imagined. Nothing more."

Elara stared at him for a moment, then buried her face in her hands with a groan. "I can't believe I'm hearing this. I always knew you were a pervert, Kael, but this is ridiculous. Going after a student? And not just any student — the duke's daughter? Have you lost your mind?"

"I didn't go after her," Kael corrected mildly. "She came to me. And everything that happened was entirely consensual. She wanted it as much as I did."

Elara lifted her head, fixing Seraphina with a sharp look. "Is this true? You wanted this?"

Seraphina's face was flushed, but she didn't look away. "Yes. I… I've been imagining something like this for years. Being dominated, being used by someone who doesn't care about my title or my family. When the opportunity presented itself, I didn't hesitate."

Elara studied her for a long moment, then sighed. "So you're both perverts. Wonderful. That explains everything."

She turned back to Kael, her expression exasperated. "I suppose I should have expected this from you. But really, Kael — couldn't you have found someone less… complicated? Less likely to cause a scandal if this gets out?"

"Life would be boring without complications," Kael said philosophically. "And sometimes the most rewarding experiences come with the highest risks."

Elara rolled her eyes, but a small smile touched her lips despite herself. "You always were like that. Taking unnecessary risks, chasing excitement wherever you could find it."

She turned her attention to Seraphina, her expression softening slightly. "And you — do you understand what you're getting yourself into? This isn't just a harmless flirtation. If this continues, there could be consequences. Real consequences."

Seraphina nodded, her expression serious. "I understand that. I've thought about it. But I'm willing to accept the risks. I want to explore this side of myself, to see where it leads. Whatever happens, I'll deal with it."

Elara studied her for a moment, then nodded slowly. "Very well. It's your life, and you're old enough to make your own decisions. Just be aware of what you're choosing."

She paused, then continued, her voice dropping to a more thoughtful tone. "Though I am curious about one thing — how do you know Kael well enough to trust him with something this intimate? You've only just met him, haven't you?"

Seraphina considered the question. "I've watched him, from a distance. The way he moves, the way he carries himself — there's a confidence there that most men don't have. A certainty that he knows exactly what he's doing. And when we were together…" She paused, choosing her words carefully. "He didn't hesitate, didn't treat me like something fragile. He took what he wanted, and I found that I enjoyed being taken."

Elara nodded slowly, absorbing this information. "I suppose I can see the appeal. Kael has always had that quality — the ability to make people feel seen, even when he's not saying much. And in bed…" She trailed off, her expression distant, as if remembering something.

Then she seemed to catch herself, and she shook her head slightly. "Anyway. This is a strange conversation to be having in the middle of the afternoon, with smoked meat and a campfire. But I suppose strange is normal where you're concerned, Kael."

"I prefer 'interesting,'" Kael said, cutting another slice of meat. "Want some more?"

Elara accepted the additional portion, and they fell into a companionable silence again. But the mood had shifted — the unspoken tension between the three of them had been acknowledged, if not fully resolved.

After a few moments, Seraphina spoke again, her voice hesitant. "Professor Vance — may I ask something?"

"Of course," Elara said.

"How do you know Kael so well?" Seraphina asked. "You seem… comfortable with him. More than just teacher and janitor."

Elara and Kael exchanged a glance, and Kael could see Elara considering how much to reveal. Then she sighed, resigning herself to the inevitable.

"We've known each other for a long time," Elara said slowly. "Since I was a student and he was… well, younger than he is now. We've been through a lot together."

"Friends?" Seraphina asked.

"More than friends," Kael said, his tone mild. "Sex friends, to be precise."

Seraphina's eyes widened in surprise. "Sex friends? You mean you're… intimate with each other?"

"Regularly," Elara confirmed, though her face flushed slightly at having to admit it so bluntly. "For years now. It's a… casual arrangement. No commitments, no expectations, just pleasure when we both want it."

Seraphina absorbed this information, her mind clearly racing. "So you're lovers, but not in a traditional sense. You have sex, but you're not a couple."

"Essentially," Elara agreed. "It works for us. We understand each other's needs, and neither of us is looking for anything more complicated."

"Is that common?" Seraphina asked, genuine curiosity in her voice. "I mean, among adults. I've read about such arrangements in novels, but I've never known anyone who actually lived like that."

"More common than you might think," Kael said. "Especially among people who value their independence and don't want the complications of traditional relationships."

Seraphina nodded slowly, considering this. "And you've been doing this for… how long?"

"About ten years now," Elara said. "Since shortly after I started teaching at the academy."

Seraphina's eyes widened again. "Ten years? That's… impressive. Most relationships don't last that long, even the casual ones."

"It works because we don't demand anything from each other," Elara explained. "We're both independent, we both have our own lives and responsibilities. When we come together, it's because we want to, not because we feel obligated to. And we understand that if either of us ever wants something different, we can end it without hard feelings."

Seraphina studied them both, as if trying to understand the dynamics at play. "And there are no romantic feelings? No jealousy, no possessiveness?"

"None," Kael said simply. "We enjoy each other's company, both in and out of bed, but we don't want more than what we have. It's a satisfying arrangement for both of us."

Seraphina was quiet for a moment, absorbing this. Then she spoke again, her voice thoughtful. "It sounds… liberating, in a way. To be able to enjoy intimacy without all the complications and expectations that usually come with it."

"It is," Elara agreed. "But it's not for everyone. Some people need more emotional connection, more commitment. And there's nothing wrong with that. Different people have different needs."

Seraphina nodded, then fixed her gaze on Kael. "So where do I fit into this? If you have a sex friend already, why did you… do what you did with me? Was it just a momentary impulse, or is there something more?"

Kael considered the question, choosing his words with care. "You're not part of my arrangement with Elara. What we have is separate from what I might have with anyone else. And what happened between us wasn't impulsive — it was something I'd been considering since I first noticed you watching me."

Seraphina's eyes widened in surprise. "You noticed me watching?"

"I notice a lot of things," Kael said calmly. "And you weren't exactly being subtle. The way you looked at me, the way your attention always seemed to drift in my direction whenever I was nearby — it was clear you were interested. I just waited to see if you'd ever work up the courage to approach me."

Seraphina's flush deepened, confirming his observation. "I… I didn't think anyone noticed. I tried to be discreet."

"You weren't," Elara commented dryly. "But then, you're young and inexperienced. You haven't learned the art of subtle observation yet."

Seraphina turned to her, slightly stung. "I suppose you're an expert at that."

"I've had more practice," Elara agreed without apology. "Ten years of avoiding notice in certain situations will teach you a thing or two."

She paused, studying Seraphina with thoughtful eyes. "But this does explain a lot. Why you're so comfortable with Kael, why you're willing to sit here and listen to him, why you don't seem to care about the social boundaries you're crossing. You've been imagining this for a long time, haven't you?"

Seraphina nodded slowly, her expression serious. "Since the beginning of the semester. When I first saw him, cleaning the hallway outside my classroom, I felt… something. A pull, a curiosity I couldn't explain. I started watching him, noticing details — the way he moved, the strength in his hands, the confidence in his posture. And the more I watched, the more I found myself imagining what it would be like to be with him."

She took a deep breath, then continued. "At first, it was just idle fantasy — something to entertain myself during boring moments. But over time, the fantasies grew more detailed, more specific. I imagined him touching me, dominating me, using me however he wanted. I imagined surrendering control completely, letting him decide everything."

Her voice dropped lower, almost to a whisper. "And yesterday, when I finally had the chance to make those fantasies real… I didn't hesitate. I wanted it more than I'd ever wanted anything."

Elara listened intently, her expression unreadable. Then she sighed, shaking her head slightly. "You really are a pervert, aren't you? Both of you."

She gestured between them, her tone more amused than critical. "Here we have a duke's daughter with elaborate domination fantasies, and a janitor who's happy to indulge them. It's like something out of one of those romance novels you girls are always reading."

"Which brings up an interesting question," Kael said mildly. "How does a proper noblewoman like yourself become so familiar with… adult literature? I wouldn't have thought your family would approve."

Seraphina's face flushed, but she didn't look away. "My maid, Eleanor, brings them to me. She's the same age as I am, and she shares my taste in reading material. We've been exchanging novels for years — hidden away where no one else can find them."

"Your maid?" Elara repeated, raising an eyebrow. "You're sharing pornographic literature with your maid? That's… surprisingly progressive for someone in your position."

"Eleanor and I grew up together," Seraphina explained. "She's more than just a servant — she's my closest friend, my confidante. We share everything, including our interests and desires."

She paused, then smiled slightly. "Though I suppose it does seem unusual from the outside. Most people assume nobles and servants maintain a certain distance. But Eleanor has always been different — she's never let social boundaries stand in the way of our friendship."

Elara nodded slowly, considering this. "I can respect that. Genuine connections are rare, regardless of social position."

She turned her attention back to Kael, her expression thoughtful. "So now that you've started down this path with Seraphina, what are your plans? Are you looking for something casual, like what we have? Or are you interested in something more… structured?"

"I haven't decided yet," Kael admitted. "I'm taking things one step at a time, seeing where they lead. Seraphina has certain desires, certain fantasies she wants to explore. I'm willing to help her with that, within reason. But beyond that…" He shrugged. "We'll see."

Seraphina studied him, her expression intense. "And what kinds of fantasies are you willing to explore with me? How far will you go?"

Kael met her gaze, his eyes steady. "That depends on what you want. How much are you willing to surrender? How far are you willing to let me push you? Because once we start down this road, there's no going back. You'll be giving me control over your pleasure, over your body, over aspects of your life you've never considered surrendering to anyone else."

Seraphina considered this, her brow furrowing in thought. "I want to explore everything," she said finally. "All the fantasies I've ever had, all the scenarios I've imagined in those novels. I want to know what it's really like to be dominated, to be used, to be owned by another person. I want to experience it all, even the parts that frighten me."

Kael nodded slowly. "Then we can explore together. But I'll expect you to follow my instructions, to trust my judgment, to accept whatever I choose to do with you. Can you do that?"

"Yes," Seraphina said without hesitation. "I can."

"Good," Kael said. "Then we'll begin whenever you're ready."

Elara watched this exchange with a mixture of fascination and amusement. "You two are ridiculous, you know that? Having this kind of conversation in the middle of the afternoon, like you're discussing a business arrangement rather than… whatever this is."

"Practicality is important," Kael said calmly. "Especially when emotions and desires are involved. Being clear about expectations and boundaries prevents misunderstandings later."

"Spoken like someone who's had plenty of practice avoiding complications," Elara observed. "Though I suppose I can't criticize — our own arrangement is built on similar principles."

She paused, then turned her attention to Seraphina. "Just be aware that this won't be easy. Surrendering control to someone else, especially someone you don't know that well, can be challenging. You'll have moments of doubt, moments where you want to pull back. You'll need to decide in advance how much you're willing to endure."

Seraphina nodded, her expression serious. "I understand that. I've thought about it extensively. And I'm prepared for whatever comes."

Elara studied her for a moment, then smiled slightly. "You're braver than I was at your age. Or perhaps just more reckless."

"I prefer 'adventurous,'" Seraphina countered, a hint of humor in her voice.

"Same thing," Elara said dismissively, though her tone was affectionate.

She stood up, brushing crumbs from her skirt. "Well, this has been an interesting afternoon, but I should be getting back. I have papers to grade, and if I'm not in my office soon, the other faculty will start asking questions."

Kael nodded, also rising to his feet. "I need to finish cleaning up here anyway. The fire needs tending, and the smoking meat should be ready to store soon."

Seraphina stood as well, though she seemed reluctant to leave. "Thank you for the food," she said sincerely. "And for… everything else."

"You're welcome," Kael said simply.

Elara fixed Seraphina with a direct look. "Be careful with him. He's not cruel, but he's not gentle either. He'll give you what you ask for, but he won't hold back once you've committed."

"I know," Seraphina said. "That's part of why I want this."

Elara nodded, then turned to Kael. "I'll see you later?"

"I'll stop by your office after my shift," Kael confirmed.

"Good," Elara said, turning to walk back toward the main academy buildings. "Don't keep me waiting."

"I won't," Kael called after her.

As Elara disappeared into the trees, Kael turned his attention to Seraphina. "You should probably head back too. It's getting late, and you don't want to be caught out here after dark."

Seraphina nodded, though she lingered for a moment. "When will I see you again?"

"Soon," Kael promised. "I'll find you."

Seraphina's face brightened at the assurance. "I'll be waiting."

With that, she turned and walked away, her steps light despite the gravity of their conversation. Kael watched her go, then turned back to the fire, checking the smoking meat one last time.

It had been an interesting afternoon — more interesting than he'd expected when he'd started his day. The dynamics between the three of them were complex, potentially messy, but also potentially rewarding. And as he tended the fire, Kael found himself looking forward to seeing where this would lead.

Whatever came next, he would handle it. He always did.
