Chapter 30 - Chapter 30: Guild Showdown (2)

Helena obeyed instantly, falling silent but her eyes remained fixed on the fight, her heart pounding with a mixture of anxiety and exhilaration. She'd seen Kael fight before, years ago when he was still an active adventurer, but this was different — there was a controlled precision to his movements now, a refinement that hadn't been present in his younger, more reckless days.

The duel reached its climax. Gareth, frustrated by his inability to land a solid hit, abandoned technique entirely and roared, channeling all his remaining strength into a final, desperate attack. He raised his greatsword high, bringing it down in a massive overhead strike intended to end the fight once and for all.

Kael saw the opening before Gareth even committed to the attack. He waited until the last possible fraction of a second, until the greatsword was already descending, unstoppable and overwhelming. Then he moved.

His boost-enhanced reflexes allowed him to react faster than humanly possible. He sidestepped the descending blade, positioning himself just outside its arc, and swung his wooden short sword in a precise, controlled arc. The wooden blade connected with Gareth's wrist, striking the nerve center with perfect timing and accuracy.

Gareth's hand spasmed, his fingers losing their grip on the greatsword. The heavy weapon tumbled from his grasp, clattering to the ground and spinning away across the training platform.

Before Gareth could recover, before he could even fully register what had happened, Kael continued his motion. His leg swept out, catching Gareth behind the knee and sending him crashing to the ground. Gareth landed hard, the impact driving the air from his lungs in a pained grunt.

Kael stood over him, his wooden sword resting lightly against Gareth's throat, the message unmistakable. The fight was over.

Gareth looked up at him, his chest heaving, his face flushed with exertion and humiliation. He stared at Kael for a long moment, his eyes filled with frustration and anger, but also with grudging respect.

"I yield," he finally managed, the words practically dragged from him. "You win."

The crowd erupted into cheers, the noise washing over the training grounds like a wave. Adventurers who had been watching called out congratulations or expressed disappointment, depending on how they'd placed their bets. Coins changed hands as losers paid winners, and the energy in the air was electric.

Kael withdrew his sword, offering his hand to help Gareth to his feet. After a brief hesitation, Gareth accepted, allowing Kael to pull him up. They faced each other, both breathing heavily, both covered in sweat from the intensity of the duel.

"You're better than you look," Gareth admitted, his voice grudging. "Far better. I misjudged you."

"Appearances can be deceiving," Kael said mildly, handing his wooden sword to one of the guild staff who had appeared to collect the weapons. "You have raw power, Gareth. Work on your control and you'll be dangerous."

Gareth nodded slowly, absorbing the criticism. "I will. And… I apologize for my behavior earlier. I let my emotions get the better of me."

"It happens," Kael replied, not pressing the issue. "Next time, focus on the fight, not on proving something to an audience."

Gareth gave a short nod of acknowledgment, then turned and walked away, needing space to process the unexpected defeat.

The crowd began to disperse, the adrenaline fading as the adventurers returned to their own training and conversations. Kael turned to find Helena approaching, followed closely by the guild master and the old man.

Helena's eyes were bright with excitement, and she didn't bother hiding her admiration. "That was incredible, Kael. Absolutely incredible. I'd forgotten just how good you really are."

She gestured toward the two newcomers. "Let me introduce you properly. This is Guild Master Isolde Blackwood — no relation, despite the surname — and beside her is Master Haruto, a retired S-rank swordsman who occasionally advises the guild on combat matters."

Isolde studied Kael with assessing eyes, her expression unreadable. "I've heard your name mentioned before, but I've never had the opportunity to see you fight in person. Impressive work. You've clearly maintained your skills despite your current… employment."

"I try to keep in practice," Kael said calmly. "It pays to be prepared."

Master Haruto, the old swordsman, stepped forward, his dark eyes fixed on Kael with intense interest. "Your technique — efficient, precise, designed to end fights quickly with minimal effort. You didn't use unnecessary power, didn't waste movement. Every action had a purpose."

He paused, studying Kael's face. "You're not an ordinary adventurer, are you? There's a depth to your combat style that comes from experience, but also from something else. A different way of thinking about fighting."

"I've seen my share of battles," Kael acknowledged, not elaborating. "When you fight for a living, you learn to be practical."

Haruto nodded slowly, accepting the non-answer. "Practical is often more valuable than flashy. Gareth has strength, but he lacks your discipline. That's something that can't be taught — it has to be earned through experience."

Isolde picked up the conversation, her tone businesslike. "Helena mentioned you were looking for information about dungeon options for the Royal Magic Academy's field practice. Is that correct?"

"It is," Kael confirmed. "The academy is considering several locations, and I need to know which dungeons are most suitable. Particularly those that might pose unexpected challenges."

Isolde considered this for a moment. "We've had several discussions with the academy administration about their field practice options. The main candidates being considered are the Whispering Caverns, the Shadowfen Ruins, and the Gilded Depths."

She listed them off, her tone informative. "The Whispering Caverns are entry-level, suitable for students with basic combat training. The Shadowfen Ruins are more challenging, with environmental hazards and more aggressive creatures. The Gilded Depths are the most demanding of the three — a multi-level dungeon with complex magical puzzles and dangerous inhabitants."

"Which one are they leaning toward?" Kael asked.

"That's part of the problem," Isolde replied. "The faculty can't agree. The noble instructors are pushing for the Gilded Depths, arguing that elite noble students should be challenged by the most demanding location available. Others are advocating for the Shadowfen Ruins as a more balanced option. The final decision will be made at their next meeting, assuming they can actually reach consensus."

Kael absorbed this information, considering the implications. "And what's the guild's assessment of each location?"

"The Whispering Caverns are straightforward," Haruto spoke up. "Few surprises, mostly goblin-type creatures with some minor magical beasts. Good for beginners, but not particularly educational for advanced students."

"The Shadowfen Ruins are more interesting," Isolde continued. "Environmental hazards include toxic fog, unstable terrain, and creatures adapted to the swamp environment. The ruins themselves contain traps and puzzles that require magical knowledge to navigate. Good for testing both combat and problem-solving skills."

"And the Gilded Depths?" Kael prompted.

"The most complex of the three," Haruto said. "Multi-level structure with increasing difficulty as you descend. The lower levels contain magical beasts and constructs that can challenge even experienced adventurers. There are also rumors of sealed chambers, hidden passages, and artifacts left by the dungeon's original builders. Dangerous, but potentially rewarding for those who can survive."

Kael nodded slowly, taking in all the information. The Gilded Depths sounded like the kind of location that could become a disaster if mismanaged — but also the kind that would appeal to arrogant nobles convinced of their own invincibility.

"Is there anything else I should know about these dungeons?" Kael asked. "Recent changes, unusual activity, anything out of the ordinary?"

Isolde exchanged a glance with Haruto, then focused back on Kael. "There have been reports of unusual activity in the Gilded Depths over the past few months. Adventurers who've explored the upper levels have reported strange magical fluctuations, sightings of creatures that don't match the dungeon's typical inhabitants, and disturbances in the dungeon's mana flow."

Haruto's expression was serious. "Nothing confirmed, but enough to suggest that something has changed. The dungeon may be shifting, evolving, or perhaps something has entered it from outside. Whatever the cause, it's no longer the stable environment it once was."

Kael filed this information away, his mind already turning over possibilities. Unusual magical activity in a dungeon the academy was considering for field practice — especially one favored by the most arrogant noble instructors — could be a recipe for catastrophe.

"I appreciate the information," Kael said, addressing both Isolde and Haruto. "It gives me something to work with."

"We're always happy to assist when we can," Isolde replied, her tone professional but warmer than before. "Especially when it involves helping the academy make informed decisions about student safety."

Helena spoke up, her expression curious. "So what will you do with this information? Go back to the academy and argue for one dungeon over another?"

"Something like that," Kael said vaguely. "Though I suspect the decision has already been made in certain minds. We'll see what happens."

He turned to Helena, offering a small smile. "Thanks for your help. I'll be in touch if I need anything else."

"You're always welcome, Kael," Helena replied, her tone warm. "And thanks for the show. I've missed seeing you in action."

Kael nodded to Isolde and Haruto, then turned and began making his way toward the guild exit, his mind already processing everything he'd learned. The information about the dungeons was useful, but the reports of unusual activity in the Gilded Depths were particularly concerning — especially given Cedric's demonic traces and the conspiracy that seemed to be unfolding within the academy.

There was a connection here, he was certain of it. He just needed to find the threads and follow them wherever they led.
