Chapter 60 - Chapter 60: First Steps (2)

She raised her hands, her magic flowing into the ground and creating visible ridges of raised earth that delineated their safe area. The barriers were simple but effective, creating a clear boundary that would force any approaching creatures to reveal themselves before reaching the group.

"Good work," Helena observed. "That kind of preparation will serve you well in the deeper levels. Most novice groups rush in without establishing secure positions, and that's when they get caught off guard."

She studied the chamber with an experienced eye, noting the positions of the crystalline formations and the layout of the terrain. "This area looks like it might have been a junction point — a place where multiple tunnels converged. If that's the case, then we may find paths leading in different directions, each with its own hazards and rewards."

"Which means we'll need to decide which direction to explore first," Seraphina observed. "And how to split our resources if we want to cover more ground."

"We stick together for now," Kael advised. "Until we have a better understanding of what we're dealing with, splitting up is too risky. Once we've mapped the immediate area and identified the main paths, we can discuss reconnaissance options."

"Agreed," Seraphina said. She caught his gaze again and felt that same quiet warmth — her master acknowledging her agreement with his assessment, approving of her willingness to follow proper guidance. It made her feel strangely proud, as if she were receiving a private compliment in a room full of strangers.

"Is something wrong, Lady Seraphina?" Clara asked, noticing the faint flush on her cheeks.

"Nothing important," Seraphina assured her, forcing her expression back to neutral. "Just thinking about the path ahead."

She could feel Lydia's gaze on her, sharp and analytical, but this time it didn't trigger any particular concern. Seraphina had no reason to suspect that Lydia was observing anything more than normal team dynamics. There was no way Lydia could know about her and Kael's relationship — no reason to think there was anything more between them than a student and her assigned adventurer.

"Focus on the present," Marcia called out, her earth magic shifting slightly as she detected movement in the shadows. "Something's approaching from the left tunnel."

All attention shifted immediately, the group automatically adjusting their formation in response to the warning. Weapons were raised, magic began to gather, and the students prepared themselves for their first encounter.

"Scavengers," Helena identified, her voice calm but urgent. "About a dozen of them. They've been attracted by the light and the scent of fresh arrivals."

Seraphina peered into the darkness, trying to make out the shapes emerging from the shadows. The creatures were dog-like in form, though their bodies were covered in chitinous plates that gleamed dully in the crystal light. They moved with skittering motions, their multiple eyes reflecting the illumination with an almost insect-like quality.

"Those are dungeon scavengers," Marcia observed, her earth magic creating additional barriers to protect their flank. "Not particularly dangerous on their own, but they can overwhelm careless groups with numbers. We need to manage the engagement carefully."

"We handle this systematically," Kael advised. "Don't spread your attacks thin. Focus on eliminating them one at a time, starting with the ones at the edges. Marcia, hold the center with your barriers. Lena, cover the rear. Clara, prepare healing magic in case anyone takes damage. Lydia, support with wind magic if you can create openings or disrupt their formation."

"Understood," the group responded in near-unison, their weapons rising in readiness as the scavengers drew closer.

The first creatures charged with an aggressive chittering sound, their chitinous plates rattling as they accelerated toward the group's defensive perimeter. Marcia's barriers held firm, the raised earth ridges forcing the scavengers to slow their approach and cluster together, making them easier targets.

"Now," Kael commanded, his voice cutting through the rising tension.

Marcia struck first, her earth magic surging forward in a controlled burst that shattered the ground beneath the leading scavenger, sending it tumbling into a newly-formed depression. Before it could recover, a spear of hardened earth impaled it, pinning it in place as the other creatures swarmed around the opening.

"Flank them," Seraphina ordered, her voice clear and authoritative. "Lydia, use wind to push them together. Lena, reinforce the barriers so they can't break through."

Lydia raised her staff, wind swirling around it as she channeled her magic into a focused blast. The compressed air struck the cluster of scavengers, driving them into a tight pack and making it difficult for them to maneuver or evade. Several were knocked off their feet, their chitinous plates clattering as they skidded across the stone floor.

"Excellent control," Helena observed, her approval evident. "Most novices would have scattered their attack and lost effectiveness."

The remaining scavengers regrouped and charged again, this time splitting into smaller groups to attack from multiple angles. Marcia responded by raising additional barriers, creating a defensive maze that forced the creatures into predictable channels. Her earth magic flowed with practiced ease, reshaping the terrain to give her team the advantage.

Lena's defensive barriers added another layer of protection, forming overlapping shields that absorbed the impact of scavengers throwing themselves against the perimeter. Her focus was intense, her magic holding firm despite the creatures' persistent attacks.

Clara remained in the center of the formation, her healing energies circulating through the group and ready to respond to any injuries. So far, the barriers were holding, but she watched her teammates closely, prepared to intervene the moment anyone took damage.

Seraphina moved to support Marcia, her fire magic flaring to life as she targeted the scavengers that were pressing the barrier line. Flames danced along her fingertips, gathering into concentrated spheres that she hurled into the densest clusters of creatures. The fire ignited the scavengers' chitinous plates, sending them into a frenzy as the heat penetrated their defenses.

"Nice targeting," Kael noted, his voice calm but approving. "Focus on the ones that are trying to find weaknesses in the barrier line."

Seraphina nodded, following his guidance without hesitation. Her master knew what he was doing, and following his instructions was the right choice — both for the success of the mission and for demonstrating her competence as his property.

The scavengers began to fall, one after another, as the coordinated attacks wore down their numbers. Marcia's earth magic created pits and spikes that trapped and impaled the creatures, while Lydia's wind magic disrupted their coordination and made it impossible for them to mount an effective defense.

When the final scavenger collapsed, its chitinous body broken and unmoving, the chamber fell silent except for the heavy breathing of the students and the faint echoes of their earlier exertions.

"Status report," Marcia called out, her earth magic still maintaining the defensive perimeter in case more creatures approached.

"All clear," Lena reported, scanning the darkness with her enhanced senses. "No additional movement detected."

"No injuries," Clara added, her healing energies beginning to subside as the immediate threat passed. "The barriers held, so no one needed direct healing."

Lydia adjusted her glasses, her attention returning to her crystal slate. "The mana fluctuations have stabilized now that the combat is over. The scavengers' presence was causing localized disturbances as they moved through the area."

"Good work, everyone," Seraphina said, allowing herself a small smile of satisfaction. Her team had handled their first encounter well, following instructions and coordinating their attacks effectively.

"You performed adequately for a first engagement," Helena observed, her tone professional but not unkind. "There are areas for improvement — your coordination could be tighter, and you need to be more aware of your positioning during combat — but overall, a solid showing."

She studied the fallen scavengers, her expression thoughtful. "We should collect what materials we can from the bodies. Chitin plates can be useful for crafting, and some of the internal organs have alchemical properties."

"We'll handle the collection," Marcia volunteered, gesturing for Lena to assist her. "We can identify the most valuable parts while the rest of the group secures the area."

As they moved to harvest the scavengers, Seraphina felt Kael's gaze on her again — a subtle acknowledgment that she had followed his guidance properly. The thought warmed her, reinforcing the sense that she was doing the right thing, both for her team and for herself.

If her master was pleased, then she was content.

The group worked efficiently to harvest the valuable materials, packing them carefully for transport back to the surface. The work was messy and unpleasant, but necessary — dungeon materials had significant value, and learning to collect them properly was an essential skill for any adventurer.

When the harvest was complete, they regrouped near the center of the chamber, taking a moment to rest and assess their situation before continuing.

"We've made good progress," Helena observed, consulting the mapping crystal she carried. "The first junction has been cleared, and we've established a secure position. From here, we can explore the three main passages that branch out from this chamber."

She gestured toward each tunnel in turn. "The left passage appears to lead deeper into the dungeon complex, with a steady decline that suggests lower levels. The center passage maintains a relatively level grade, with indications of regular traffic — possibly a main thoroughfare used by the dungeon's inhabitants. The right passage shows signs of moisture and fungal growth, which could indicate a different ecosystem or possibly access to water sources."

"Which route do you recommend?" Seraphina asked, studying each tunnel with interest.

"For a first expedition, I'd suggest exploring the center passage first," Helena advised. "It's likely to be the most stable and predictable of the three, which makes it suitable for gaining experience with dungeon exploration. The left passage may lead to more dangerous territory, and the right passage could contain environmental hazards that would be difficult to handle without proper preparation."

Kael nodded in agreement. "The center passage is the logical choice for now. We can map it, identify any resources or threats, and use it as a baseline for understanding the dungeon's layout. Once we're familiar with this area, we can consider branching out to the other passages."

"Agreed," Seraphina said, accepting the recommendation. It matched her own assessment, and having both adventurers endorse the same course of action gave her confidence that they were making the right decision.

She turned to her team. "We'll proceed along the center passage. Marcia, maintain defensive barriers as we advance. Lydia, continue monitoring the mana readings and call out any anomalies. Clara, stay ready for healing. Lena, keep watch on our rear flank."

"Understood," the group responded, their weapons ready as they prepared to continue their exploration.

As they began to move toward the center passage, Seraphina fell into step beside Kael, maintaining the proper professional distance but allowing herself to be close enough to catch his occasional glances. He didn't speak to her directly, his attention focused on their surroundings, but the subtle sense of connection remained — a private understanding that existed between them even in the midst of this public expedition.

They were master and slave, property and owner, and nothing that happened here could change that fundamental truth. The dungeon, the other students, the facade of propriety — none of it mattered in the face of that reality.

And as they moved deeper into the darkness of the Gilded Depths, Seraphina found herself strangely content with that knowledge. She was where she belonged, doing what she was meant to do, and serving the man who owned her completely.

The field practice had begun in earnest, and for the first time since they'd arrived, Seraphina felt truly ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead.
