Chapter 154 - The Return Of The Parties

The Demon King advanced.

Aurelion pushed himself to his feet, his body aching, his breath steady. The shards beneath his skin pulsed with power—he could feel them, waiting, hungry. The transformation was there, at the edge of his consciousness. The wings. The claws. The armor.

He held it back.

Not yet. Not unless he had to.

The Demon King raised his sword.

"Any last words?" he asked.

Aurelion met his eyes.

"Just one." He raised his blade. "You're going to lose."

The Demon King laughed—a cold, hollow sound.

"Delusional to the very end."

He swung—

And a blade intercepted his.

The impact sent shockwaves through the battlefield, cracking the stone beneath their feet. The Demon King's eyes widened as he was driven back, his boots scraping against the ground.

A figure stood between him and Aurelion.

Tall. Lean. Crimson armor gleaming in the dim light.

Caelus.

The Ascendant from the Crimson Blades stood with his blade raised, his pale eyes fixed on the Demon King. His expression was calm, almost bored—the same expression he had worn when he had humbled Aurelion in Whisperwood Forest.

"You look terrible, Kade," Caelus said without looking back. "You always did know how to make an entrance."

Aurelion stared at him. "Caelus—"

"Save your strength." Caelus's blade hummed with contained power. "You're going to need it."

More figures emerged from the chaos.

Mira appeared beside Caelus, her crimson armor scarred but intact. Valerius and Kaelen flanked her, their weapons ready. The rest of the Crimson Blades formed up behind them.

"The Crimson Blades answer the call," Mira said. "We're not letting you have all the fun."

Sera and the Lifeline appeared on the left flank, their formation tight, their weapons ready. Rhea and her Ascendants moved in from the right, their power crackling around them. Marcus and the Lancet Remnants formed a defensive line behind them.

The tournament parties had arrived.

Caelus stepped forward, his blade raised, his eyes fixed on the Demon King.

"You've been causing quite a bit of trouble," he observed. "I've been looking forward to this."

The Demon King surveyed them, his eyes blazing.

"More insects," he observed. "More prey."

Ryuta stepped forward, his katana gleaming. The Japanese contingent formed up behind him, their armor polished, their eyes sharp.

"We're not prey," he said. "We're hunters."

The Demon King laughed.

"Then hunt."

He attacked.

The battle was chaos.

Caelus engaged the Demon King directly, his blade a blur of motion. The Ascendant moved with the precision of someone who had spent years perfecting his craft. His strikes were surgical, each one aimed at a gap in the Demon King's armor.

"You're fast," the Demon King admitted. "Faster than most."

Caelus's blade carved a shallow gash across his chest. "I've had practice."

Mira flanked the Demon King, her blade finding gaps in his guard. Valerius's speed forced him to divide his attention. Kaelen's shield absorbed blows that would have shattered lesser defenses.

But the Demon King was relentless.

He struck Kaelen's shield—it cracked but held. Valerius darted in, his blade finding the gap in the Demon King's shoulder. Ichor sprayed. The Demon King roared, backhanding Valerius across the battlefield.

Mira was there, her blade carving a deep gash across the Demon King's side. He staggered, his eyes blazing.

"You're all so eager to die," he snarled.

Rhea moved in.

Her power was immense, her attacks devastating. She drove the Demon King back, her blade carving deep gashes in his armor. Sera and the Lifeline attacked in coordinated waves, their strikes precise, their movements synchronized.

The Demon King was surrounded.

Caelus struck from the front, his blade finding the Demon King's chest. Mira struck from the left, her blade carving across his ribs. Rhea struck from the right, her blade driving into his shoulder. The Lifeline pressed from behind, their attacks relentless.

The Demon King stumbled.

He was wounded—ichor pouring from a dozen gashes, his armor cracked and broken. But he was still standing. Still fighting.

"You're actually holding me," he admitted. "Impressive."

Caelus raised his blade. "We're just getting started."

The Demon King laughed—a cold, hollow sound.

"Then let's see how long you can last."

He attacked.

The battle continued.

The tournament parties fought with everything they had, their weapons finding gaps in the Demon King's guard. Caelus was relentless, his blade a blur of motion. Mira was fierce, her strikes precise. Rhea was powerful, her attacks devastating. Sera and the Lifeline moved with perfect coordination. Marcus and the Lancet Remnants fought with desperate fury. Ryuta and the Japanese contingent moved with surgical precision.

They were holding him.

Aurelion watched from the edge of the battlefield, his fists clenched, his body aching. The shards beneath his skin pulsed with power, waiting, hungry. He could feel the transformation at the edge of his consciousness.

He held it back.

Not yet.

The Demon King was struggling. He was powerful, yes—but he was also outnumbered, outmaneuvered, overwhelmed. The combined forces of the tournament parties were too much for him.

"You're losing," Caelus observed. "I can see it in your eyes."

The Demon King laughed—a cold, hollow sound.

"Losing?" He raised his hand. "I haven't even started."

The darkness surged forward.

But the tournament parties were ready.

Caelus raised his blade, cutting through the darkness. Mira flanked the Demon King, her blade finding his side. Rhea drove forward, her power pushing back the shadows. Sera and the Lifeline coordinated their attacks, forcing the Demon King to divide his attention.

Marcus charged, his broken blade finding a gap in the Demon King's guard. Ryuta's katana carved a deep gash across his chest.

The Demon King staggered.

He was wounded—ichor pouring from a dozen gashes, his armor cracked and broken. He was breathing heavily, his form flickering, unstable.

"You can't win," Caelus said. "You know that, don't you?"

The Demon King laughed—a cold, hollow sound.

"Maybe," he admitted. "But I can still take you with me."

He raised his hand.

The darkness surged forward.

The tournament parties were scattered.

Caelus was driven back, his blade cracked. Mira was thrown across the battlefield, her armor dented. Rhea was on her knees, her power fading. Sera was on the ground, her formation broken.

Marcus was still standing, but barely. Ryuta was still fighting, his katana raised, his eyes blazing.

The Demon King stood at the center of the destruction, his eyes blazing, his power crackling around him.

"Who's next?" he demanded. "Who else wants to die?"

Aurelion stepped forward.

His body was aching. His strength was fading. But he stepped forward.

"I do."

The Demon King's eyes narrowed.

"You?" He laughed. "You can barely stand."

Aurelion raised his blade. "I can still fight."

The Demon King laughed—a cold, hollow sound.

"Then fight."

He attacked.

Aurelion met him head-on.

Their blades clashed with enough force to shatter stone, sending shockwaves through the battlefield. Aurelion was driven back, his boots scraping against the ground.

But he didn't fall.

He attacked again.

The Demon King was relentless, his sword a blur of motion. Aurelion blocked, dodged, countered. The shards beneath his skin pulsed with power, feeding him strength, accelerating his movements.

"You're holding back," the Demon King observed. "I can feel it. You're afraid of what you'll become."

Aurelion pushed. "I'm not afraid."

"You are." The Demon King's eyes blazed. "You're afraid of becoming me."

Aurelion's blade slipped.

The Demon King's sword carved a deep gash across his chest. He staggered, blood pouring from the wound.

"You're right," the Demon King said. "You're not good enough."

He attacked again.

Aurelion fell.

He hit the ground hard, his blade clattering across the stone. The Demon King stood over him, his sword raised, his eyes blazing.

"Any last words?" he asked.

Aurelion looked up at him.

"I've been fighting for years," he said. "I've faced worse than you."

The Demon King laughed.

"No, you haven't."

He swung.

But the blade never fell.

Caelus was there, his broken blade intercepting the Demon King's sword. Mira was there, her blade finding his side. Rhea was there, her power surging forward. Sera was there, her formation reforming. Marcus was there, his broken blade raised. Ryuta was there, his katana gleaming.

The tournament parties had regrouped.

"You're not dying today," Caelus said. "Not on our watch."

The Demon King's eyes blazed.

"Then you'll all die together."

He attacked.

The battle continued.

The tournament parties fought with everything they had, their weapons finding gaps in the Demon King's guard. Caelus was relentless, his broken blade still finding its mark.

And Aurelion watched.

He could feel the shards beneath his skin pulsing with power, waiting, hungry. The transformation was there, at the edge of his consciousness. The wings. The claws. The armor.

He could feel it.

But he held it back.

Not yet.

Aurelion felt hands grab him.

Strong hands, pulling him back from the edge of the battlefield. He tried to resist, his body screaming, his mind focused on the Demon King. But the hands were insistent, dragging him away from the fight.

"Get off me!" he shouted, struggling against their grip. "I need to fight!"

"You need to not die!" a voice shouted back.

He recognized it—one of the medics from the camp. The woman had been treating him for hours, her hands steady, her voice calm. Now she was dragging him away from the battle with the help of two soldiers.

"Let me go!" Aurelion tried to push them off. "The Demon King—"

"Is being handled!" the medic snapped. "You're useless to anyone dead!"

Aurelion's vision swam. He could feel the shards beneath his skin pulsing weakly, their power dimming. His body was broken, his strength spent. But he couldn't stop fighting. He couldn't stop trying.

"I need to—"

"Move!"

The medic pulled a pistol from her belt—a small, compact weapon with a vial attached to the barrel. She pressed it against his arm and pulled the trigger.

A sharp sting. A cold sensation spreading through his veins.

Aurelion's eyes widened. "What did you—"

"Sedative," she said. "You'll be out in a few seconds."

"I don't need—I can't—"

His limbs were growing heavy. His vision was blurring. The sounds of battle were fading, distant, muffled.

"No," he tried to say. "No, I need to—"

But the darkness was already creeping in.

He forced his attention back to the battlefield, his fading vision struggling to focus. He had to see. He had to know what was happening.

The Demon King was standing at the center of the chaos, his eyes blazing, his power crackling around him. The tournament parties were scattered around him—Caelus on his knees, his blade broken. Mira on the ground, her armor dented. Rhea gasping, her power fading. Sera's formation in ruins. Marcus's broken blade in his hand, his body covered in wounds.

They had fought with everything they had.

They had held him.

And now—

The Demon King raised his hand.

"I've had enough of this," he said.

He swung.

The sky above him darkened—not with clouds, but with fire. Small meteors materialized in the air, each one blazing with crimson light, each one aimed at the scattered hunters below. They fell like a rain of judgment, their impact devastating.

Caelus was thrown back by the shockwave, his body tumbling across the battlefield. Mira crashed into a pillar as a meteor struck the ground beside her, the explosion shattering her armor. Rhea was driven to her knees, her power extinguished by the relentless bombardment. Sera and the Lifeline were scattered, their formation broken beyond repair. Marcus fell, his broken blade slipping from his grasp as a meteor cratered the ground beneath him. Ryuta was thrown back, his katana cracking under the force of the blast.

They were broken.

All of them.

The Demon King stood at the center of the destruction, his eyes blazing, his power crackling around him.

"Pathetic," he said. "All of you. Pathetic and weak."

He turned.

He walked back toward the fortress.

Behind him, the battlefield was silent.

Aurelion tried to speak. No words came out.

His vision darkened.

The last thing he saw was the Demon King's silhouette disappearing into the shadows of the fortress.

And then—

Nothing.
