Chapter 14 - What the Stars Left Behind

The lesson began without being announced as such.

The white-haired woman had appeared in the room with the grey of morning — or what passed for morning in this place, which was the light changing from total absence to partial absence with the specific slowness of something that is in no hurry because the destination is inevitable regardless. She had placed on the table two objects: a piece of wood of no deliberate shape and an unlit candle. She had sat. She had looked at Mara with the expression of someone waiting for the other side of the table to understand what is expected without the expected needing to be said.

Mara had looked at the objects. Had looked at the woman. "I don't know your name."

"Nay." With the tone of something that had been said before in another conversation in another mouth — with the identical cadence, Mara noticed, to what she herself had used with Elowen the previous evening, which was either coincidence or the way certain people say when it is time without using those words. "Not yet."

She had decided it was not coincidence.

"The wand," said the woman, without preamble, with the quality of someone proceeding directly to what matters because what does not matter is time that could be something else. "Thou held it inside the ritual. What didst thou feel?"

"Heat."

"Before the heat."

Mara was silent with the silence of someone searching for the word for something that had occurred below the level at which words ordinarily operate. "Like a direction," she said at last. "Not a path — a direction. Like knowing there is a north without knowing where north is."

The white-haired woman looked at her for a moment with something that was not praise but occupied the same space that praise occupies when the person who feels it has not the habit of expressing it and who was, with the discretion of someone who had developed this habit as long-standing policy, registering without showing that she registered.

"Will," she said. "What thou felt is someone will. Thine own." A pause. "The wand has no power of its own — it is a guide, an instrument that translates what thou hast into what the world can recognise as deliberate intention. The world is, by nature, resistant. Not malevolent — resistant, which is different. It prefers to remain as it is with the preference of things that have existed long enough to have developed opinions about their own continuity." Two fingers rested lightly on the piece of shapeless wood. "Will is the argument that persuades the world to consider another possibility."

"How does one persuade the world?"

"As one persuades anything resistant." The gaze lifted slightly. "With sufficiently persistent argument."

There was, Mara noticed, something in the way the woman conducted conversation that was the exact mirror of the conversation in the café with Caen — the answers that were technically complete and that opened more than they closed, the silence used as instrument and not as pause, the quality of someone who had taught enough to know that certain things only enter if there is space for them to enter, and that the space was created by the question and not by the answer. She had been on the other side of this. It was different to be on this side.

"First thou understandest what it is," said the woman. She looked at the candle with the attention of someone about to use an object to explain something the object only partially captures. "Before thee. Before me. Before anything this world calls history with the pretension that history is the beginning — there were other things."

The fire in the hearth breathed.

"From the stars, some say." The voice had the care of words chosen not for imprecision but for a different kind of precision — because the exact words for certain things did not exist in this language or in any language made by human mouths to communicate human experience. "Above, say others. Transcendent, say those who require a name for what refuses naming." A pause. "I call them the anteriors. Because that is what they are — anterior to any distinction the world has learnt to make about itself."

"What kind of thing are they?"

The woman was silent with the silence of someone searching not for the description but for the correct angle of entry into the description, which are entirely different things.

"The kind," she said, "that when thou lookest at one of them, part of what thou art decides it would have been simpler not to have looked." The voice had the quality of someone describing something they had seen and with whose memory they had developed, over the time elapsed since seeing, a relationship of honest coexistence rather than overcoming. "They are not malevolent. They are not benevolent. They are anterior to these categories as well — they exist at a scale that renders good and evil irrelevant as applicable concepts, in the way the wind is not cruel when it fells a tree. The tree falls. The wind does not know the tree fell."

"Do they still exist?"

"They always have. They always will." The eyes met Mara's with something that was not fear — it was what exists after a long time with the information that certain things are permanent, which is a form of peace that is not comfortable but is honest. "What changes is the attention. When their attention is here—" the vague gesture that encompassed the space, the manor, the whole world of the portal, "—things become denser. More real. More intense in both senses the word has, the beautiful and the terrible simultaneously, because density does not distinguish."

"And when the attention goes?"

"The world breathes." A pause. "This place — this memory — is a place where the attention has been for a very long time. Where the mark of the attention remains after the attention departed. Like the impression a heavy hand leaves in a soft surface even after the hand has gone — the world here still carries the impression of the weight." The eyes returned to the unlit candle. "Which is also why Will works differently here. The world of this memory has been pressed sufficiently to become more malleable. More willing to consider argument."

Mara looked at the candle.

"The saint," she said.

"Is a consequence." Spoken with the precision of someone being exact and not cruel. "Of what was done to her. Of what she did with what was done to her. Of what what she did did to the world around her." A pause. "Consequences are long when what initiates them has sufficient weight. And the marks of their attention have weight sufficient for very long consequences."

"What was done to her?"

The white-haired woman was silent with the silence of someone determining the sequence — deciding which part comes before which part, with the methodology of someone who had learnt that certain information received in the wrong order produced the wrong understanding, which was harder to correct than the original ignorance because wrong understanding had the texture of certainty whilst ignorance at least knew it was ignorance.

"First the wand," she said. "Then the history." She placed her fingers lightly on the candle. "Point the wand. Do not think of fire — think of direction. Of north without a map. Let the Will find what the candle needs to be completely what it wishes to be."

"Do candles wish to be lit?"

"Everything wishes to be completely what it is." She withdrew her fingers with the composure of someone who had said what there was to say and who was confident it had been sufficient. "The candle has wax and has wick. Only the beginning is lacking. Will does not create — it points to what was already available. It is the difference between making the fire and showing the wick that fire was possible."

Mara raised the wand.

Pointed.

She tried not to think of fire — she thought of direction, of north without coordinate, of the way the wand had responded inside the cathedral before responding with more than she had to give. There was the understanding now: Will, translation, argument. There was the knowing. There was also, and she perceived it, the distance between knowing and doing that was the distance the woman had mentioned and had not mentioned without reason.

The candle did not light.

The woman said nothing.

Mara lowered the wand. Breathed. Raised it again. She thought less — thought had been the mediation the process did not ask for, the extra step the argument did not need, the interpreter present in a conversation between two who spoke the same language. She thought of the candle. Of the wick. Of what the wick was when it was completely what it was.

The flame appeared.

Small — with the specific tentativeness of things arriving for the first time and that do not yet know whether they are welcome, that oscillate at the boundary between being and not being before deciding that being is the option they choose. It wavered. Considered. Decided. Settled at the height of something that had found its equilibrium and was now simply being.

Mara looked at it.

The white-haired woman looked at it too — with the expression of someone who had seen this before and who had developed, with the previous times, an appreciation that did not diminish with repetition because what was being appreciated was not the novelty but the thing itself, which was always the same thing and was for that reason always worth appreciating.

"It took long enough," she said.

"I thought I'd been rather quick."

"For a first time." The voice carried the honesty of someone who had decided, at some point distant enough to be nature rather than policy, that preparing someone for what was coming was the only gift that had real value. "For what the world will ask of thee — it took time." A pause. "But it lit."

Mara looked at the flame that had decided to be.

"It is," said the white-haired woman, her gaze on the flame and her voice with the quality of something thought many times and that had arrived, through those many times, at the form that truths take when they cease to be surprising and become simply true, "always the part that surprises."

"What surprises?"

The woman looked at the flame with the expression of someone contemplating something they had seen many times and with which they had arrived, through those many times, at a conclusion that was one of honest coexistence with incomplete understanding.

"The anteriors — those of the stars — do not understand this." The voice had something that was not admiration but was what exists after a long time with the information that certain things are genuinely impossible to replicate. "They exist or they do not, at a scale that admits no attempt, that has no space for the interval between failing and trying again." The eyes left the flame and met Mara's with the quality of a conclusion that had arrived at its own end. "Humans—" she made the vague gesture that encompassed everything, the room and the manor and the world of the portal and the world beyond the portal, "—persist."

A pause.

"It is incomprehensible to them." The voice had something close to tenderness that was not tenderness — it was the recognition of something observed long enough for the observing to have developed its own texture. "And it is, possibly, the only thing thou hast that they do not have and never will."

The flame continued.

Small. Steady. Being completely what it was.

And then came the sound from below.

Not from the foundations in the structural sense — not the settling of old stone that ancient buildings make when the night's temperature presses against the day's. It was deeper than that, more deliberate, with the rhythm of something that had memorised a frequency and was using that frequency now with the patience of something that is in no hurry because it is certain. The same rhythm Mara had felt rise through the uneven stone floor of a cathedral while a congregation responded in unison to words that were not words.

The white-haired woman was standing.

In her face there was not surprise — there was the recognition of something calculated as a possibility that had arrived before the point the calculation had reached, which is different from not having been foreseen; the difference that exists between being caught unprepared and being caught sooner than the prepared could reach. Her eyes swept the room with the speed of someone remaking a plan in real time and arriving at the new plan before finishing dismantling the old one.

"Thou stayest here," she said.

And left.

From the direction of the main entrance came then the second sound — not from the foundations, from the walls, with the quality of distributed and constant pressure, like something that had reached the exterior surface of the manor and was applying force not with violence but with the persistence of something that had learnt that persistence is more efficient than violence for things made of old stone that had resisted enough violence to have developed immunity to it.

Elowen was at the corridor door.

She had come down without being called, which meant she had heard through the thin walls where it mattered, which meant she had known what the sound was before Mara knew what the sound was, which meant there was in her face — for a fragment of a second, before she reorganised it with the speed of someone who had practised reorganising it — the information that what was outside was exactly what Mara had been being taught to understand in this room all morning.

"Come," said Elowen.

Not with performative urgency. With the urgency of someone who knows that the time available has a specific quantity and that that quantity is diminishing.

The manor groaned — not the way wood groans, the way stone groans when something very heavy is leaning against it from outside and deciding whether to remain leaning or to do something else.

Mara took the wand from the table.

She followed Elowen into the dark of the corridor, with the candle she had learnt to light still burning on the table behind her, small and steady, being completely what it was — not knowing, or perhaps knowing, that it was about to be left alone in the room.
