Getting cleaned up by basically snapping my fingers and willing myself to be clean, I stand up and materialize clothes onto myself and join the girls by the lake. Wednesday looks up from the Hunter's Handbook and gives me a slight nod that is combined with a look of pride at my creation.
"Wednesday won't say it out loud but she's really impressed by this Hunter's Handbook that you made and it's attention to even small details on monsters most would overlook…which would cause them to my classify or identify a monster species and the bit about the Vetalas who most believe are solo hunters are actually pack hunters ranging from pack of two to six." Enid gushes and Wednesday's ears turn bright red while her cheeks only gain a pale pinkishness to them, Wednesday glances at me nods then looks away from me and back to reading the Hunter's Handbook.
"Come on you two, let's head back to Bobby's. Wednesday, I'm sure you'll want to compare the information in the Handbook to the texts, scrolls and various other resources of knowledge Uncle Bobby has at his house…Enid, I don't know about you but I could eat a cow." My words are rather playful, but Enid looks a little shy as she nods her head in agreement with the sentiment of being hungry. Wednesday just looks at me for a few moments before closing the Handbook, clutching it to her chest and standing upright.
"I will look forward to searching for deficiencies and inconsistencies in your work, using those sources of information." Wednesday says in a matter of fact tone and I try not to feel personally attacked, while Enid coughs into her hand, "Wednesday." With a not so subtle elbow to her ribs.
I try to make sure the smile on my face is carefree, "There is also something I'd like for both of you to understand the world we're about to return to…my situation there is complicated…every one believes I have an acute case of amnesia, but the truth is Matthew Campbell didn't exist before I woke up in a hospital bed, but there are records and people who remember him all the way back to the day he was born…a powerful or many powerful entities created this identity for me and sent me into this…that world, so the three of us are in pretty similar boats." I try to explain and before I know it Enid is crashing into my chest like a missile hugging me, tilting my head downward I see that Enid is crying.
"We'll find a way to get all of us home, I promise!" Enid declares with steel in her glowing green eyes.
"I'll be happy just to get you two home and back to your families, but I appreciate that you care Enid." I keep my voice soft and give Enid head pats that make an adorable smile blossom onto her face.
I feel a rather heated glare burning into my forehead which makes me lift my head to see Wednesday's black marbles, glaring at me with a new level of intensity. "I know you care too Wednesday, maybe I'll catch a ride with you two to your world, after all we can't break up our little pack…with that said finding a way to get to your world will be a marathon not a sprint so be prepared to spend many years here…or even your entire lives if it proves too dangerous to get you guys back to your home world." I offer and Wednesday looks down at her shiny black shoes before looking back up into my eyes the glaring is gone but there is still an intensity in her eyes, that's when I notice her eyes flashing to my hand that is still petting Enid's head.
'Wait…it can't be…no she definitely is, she's jealous about the lack of head patting she's getting…well not getting.' A realization dawns on me and Enid seems to catch on all on her own, Enid moves without any actual promoting grabs Wednesday by the arm, brings her closer to me, while allowing Wednesday enough time to move away if she wants to I rest my hand on top of her head and begin petting her hair.
Wednesday's chin dips downwards as her ears start to burn bright red, which draws a soft series of snickering giggles out of Enid as she squeezes Enid's arm and vibrates in place exuding feelings of happiness and excitement.
Smirking, I take the three of us back to Bobby's, 'I think I'm forgetting something…but for the life of me I can't remember what…' Shrugging away my thoughts I let Enid give Wednesday the 411 on the room upstairs while I go and change the sheets that got bloody when I laid Enid down on it after pulling the bullets out her.
"Hmm, I know the bed isn't that big but I'm sure the three of us can sleep in it…" Enid says drawing me out of my head.
"You two can share the room upstairs, I've been sleeping on this cot while filling in for Uncle Bobby, plus I don't need much sleep, just a couple hours here or there." I cut in before Enid can get too excited and receive a very cute pout and crossed arms over a very perky set of bare tits.
"Oh and if you're cold or feel like wearing anything I bought some clothes in your size. They're in the kitchen or the Chevelle. I can't remember if I brought them inside or not with the meat-" before I can finish the U.S. Marshalls phone rings and I answer it while using Bobby's U.S. Marshall identity Marshall Adam Huntington.
By the time I hang up the phone Wednesday has a small little smile on her face while looking at me and Enid is just staring at me with her mouth hanging open, then the Hunter's Hotline starts ringing.
Picking up the phone, "Hey dork, it's me Zoey…so you know I've been tracking what I thought was a werewolf but…I've got a weird one here, it almost looks like a werewolf attack but…something isn't sitting right with me about it." Zoey, a huntress I've established a decent rapport over the phone with, cockily greets me.
"Hey Zoe-Zoe, so tell me what's going on that makes you think this isn't a werewolf?" My words sound a bit playful but the tone of my voice conveys my seriousness.
"Okay, so the coroner here saw a puncture wound just behind the victim's ear that went upwards all the way into the vic's brain, the thing is a shriveled up husk with the pee-tutu-ary gland missing." Zoey explains to me and looks over the guide on Bobby's desk just to be sure I get down to a Kitsune being responsible for the deaths.
"Alright Zoey, I'm ninety-nine percent sure you're dealing with a Kitsune, you can kill them same as a werewolf with silver to the heart, but here's the kicker they can be both pack hunters and lone rangers…the chance that you're dealing with a Kit family are pretty high…if you think you need backup I could come to you…?" I give Zoey my best educated guess and the way to kill it along with a genuine worry about there being multiple predators, before offering to come help.
"I…okay, I'll give you the address to the motel I'm staying at." Zoey offers and I grab a fresh pad of paper, taking down the address.
"I'll start heading that way soon...wait for me before making a move Zoey, I know you're a skilled Hunter but just this week alone I've had three hunters get themselves killed on me because they underestimated what they're hunting."
