It was Eli who found it first, which was not surprising. Eli found most things first.
He came to me on a quiet Wednesday morning with the particular expression he wore when he had information significant enough to require a private room and a closed door. It was an expression that involved very little visible change from his normal composure but which I had learned to read in the set of his shoulders and the precise, controlled way he placed himself in the doorway rather than simply walking through it.
"Close the door," I said, before he spoke.
He closed it. He sat. He placed a small, folded piece of paper on the desk between us.
