He brought it up three days later, in the study, at the end of a working session that had covered the Harren timeline, the Dowager's continued absence from the estate's visible social life, and the latest report from Isolda's network on the payment routing.
We had been working for two hours. The lamp had been turned up fully an hour ago as the afternoon light faded. The documents on the desk between us were organized in the way they always were after a long session, the resolved items stacked to the left, the pending items weighted down by Darius's silver correspondence seal on the right, the one or two things that defied easy categorization left in the middle where neither of us had to pretend to know what to do with them yet.
He closed the last document and sat back, and I was already beginning to gather my own notes when he said, without looking up from the desk:
"Halverin has feelings for you."
I stopped gathering my notes.
