Her body had simply given out, instinctively protecting the only thing that still mattered: the tiny life growing silently inside her.
"Chief, where are we going?" Mateo asked, his hands steady on the wheel as they merged onto the highway.
"Back to the mansion," Santiago muttered, his voice low and hoarse, barely above a whisper. His eyes never left the laptop glowing in front of him. "I'm tired."
Mateo hesitated, then asked carefully, "And… what about the package?"
Santiago's head snapped toward him. His glare was sharp enough to make Mateo flinch visibly. "What do you think?" The words came out icy, final. No further questions would be tolerated.
Silence swallowed the car again, broken only by the steady hum of tires on asphalt.
