The request was half-joking, half-serious.


Santiago did not break his stride. "No." Then, more colder, "My mansion is out of reach."


Luciano stopped where he was and watched him go, across the pavement, toward the distant airstrip. Then the sound came: the heavy, growing rumble of rotor blades slicing into the night. The helicopter lifted, noise swelling, then thinning, then fading into the darkness until it was gone.


Only after the sound disappeared did the room seem to breathe again. Almost immediately Don Alejandro's gaze moved to Gabriel.
