Chapter 33 - Transformation

Aiden stood in the dimly lit laboratory, his eyes fixed on the complex machine humming ominously before him. The rhythmic whirring of its mechanical arms created an unsettling soundtrack as the lights above pulsed in sync with the machine's movements. Suddenly, a container began to lower from an opening in the ceiling, and Aiden's breath caught in his throat as he noticed the vibrant red glow emanating from within.

As the container reached its destination, Aiden pressed a button, and the lid hissed open, revealing a glowing sphere that seemed almost alive as it pulsed with energy. His heart raced as one of the mechanical arms extended, deftly retrieving the orb and placing it securely into a designated slot on the platform.

The moment the orb touched the surface, an icy sensation washed over Aiden, causing a chill to crawl down his spine. The hair on the back of his neck stood on end, and his skin tingled as a sense of dread engulfed him.

Overwhelmed, Aiden turned away, unable to witness what was about to happen as the arm maneuvered the core toward Amalia's motionless body. He took a deep, steadying breath, but his hands trembled uncontrollably, and his body shook as anxiety consumed him.

With a mix of trepidation and urgency, he glanced back just in time to see the orb hovering ominously above her. The machine's arms unfurled like deadly tendrils, reaching out as the orb slowly descended towards her chest. Aiden's heart pounded loudly in his ears as he watched the arms make contact, initiating the machine's intricate and mysterious operation.

The lights flickered erratically as the arms began to manipulate the core, causing it to glow even brighter. Aiden felt as though he were on the verge of a precipice, terrified of what would come next.

"Please work, please..." he whispered fervently, his heart racing and pulse quickening in response to the escalating tension in the room.

As if in reaction to his silent plea, the machine's hum grew louder, vibrating through the air and creating an almost electric atmosphere. A blinding flash of light erupted as the core intensified, and Aiden's eyes darted to the readings on the control panel. To his horror, the energy output surged wildly, the levels climbing far beyond what he could comprehend, and the temperature within the chamber began to spike dangerously.

[Warning: Resonance Density approaching threshold]

"What? That's impossible," he muttered in disbelief. "The core's power should be limited to its own body; it shouldn't be able to affect an organic one." Panic gripped him as he stared in horror at the readings that blared like alarm bells, warning him that the machine was overheating. The air around him felt increasingly thick, almost suffocating, with an electrical charge that set his nerves on edge.

"No, no, no! This can't be happening. This can't be right," he breathed, desperation creeping into his voice.

Rushing to the controls, Aiden frantically tried to regain control, but the system had turned chaotic. The readings flashed erratically on the screen, and data twisted into incomprehensible patterns as he struggled to make sense of what was unfolding before him. The weight of the situation was crushing, and he realized that he had to act swiftly if there was to be any hope of saving them both.

The machine was laboring under immense strain, every component trembling as the device struggled to maintain its function. The core was nearing catastrophic overload, its internal temperature rising to dangerous levels.

"Come on! Come on!" Aiden shouted, his voice echoing against the metallic walls of the chamber. The air was stifling and scorching, the sound of the machine's whine accompanied by the crackling energy that filled the atmosphere like a live wire.

The entire machine began to shudder violently, its core radiating heat so intense that Aiden could feel it from where he stood. The lights overhead flickered erratically, casting shadows that danced wildly across the room as energy pulsed ominously through the system.

"Dammit!" Aiden cursed in frustration, slamming his fist against the console, sending a jolt of pain through his hand that he barely registered. His anger boiled beneath the surface, hot and consuming.

With determination, he focused on the control panel, his fingers flying over the keys with desperate urgency. The machine's hum grew louder, a rising cacophony that threatened to drown out his thoughts, while the mechanical arms trembled under the strain, and the room grew dimmer as the lights fought against the overwhelming power draw. "Forgive me, but I'm going to use a normal core..."

As if responding to his command, the mechanical arms shifted with purpose, and the hum of the machine intensified, resonating like the roar of a beast awakening from slumber. A bright flash erupted, illuminating the chamber momentarily.

"I'm so sorry, Amalia..." Aiden whispered, his heart heavy with regret and fear, his mind racing through the consequences of his choice. The process initiated, the core's power surged through the mechanical arms and into the machine, channeling its energy toward her.

"I've done all I can. The rest is up to her..." he murmured, his voice now thick with emotion, cracking as his body trembled with anxiety. The lights pulsed erratically, while the air crackled with electricity, the machine's whimpering transforming into a full-bodied wail of mechanical desperation.

[Entering Phase Two. Please have a containment body prepared.]

Aiden activated the secondary arms with a jolt of determination. Immediately, the machine's hum faded slightly, the energy output dropping to a more manageable level. A large containment container descended from the ceiling, its metal frame gleaming under the harsh lights, as the machine's arms expertly maneuvered it into position above the platform.

With painstaking precision, the arms lifted the unconscious Amalia and carefully placed her into the chamber, sealing her within its confines like an intricate puzzle piece locking into place. The hum of the machine grew exponentially louder, echoing through the chamber. The air around them pulsed with energy, and the lights flashed in rapid succession as if responding to the rising tension.

As the process began in earnest, the machine continued to absorb energy, the hum transforming into a powerful growl. The atmosphere around Aiden felt electric, alive with possibilities and dangers, while the readings on the console indicated a sharp rise in energy output, the whirring crescendo of the machine's performance becoming deafening.

The mechanical arms whirred and clicked, moving at a speed so quick that they blurred before his eyes, executing their tasks with an efficiency beyond human capability.

It was an excruciating moment; the air crackled with latent power, the surrounding atmosphere felt as if it were charged with raw energy, and the core pulsed with intensity that threatened to swallow them whole.

Aiden realized the stakes; the person who emerged from this processing could either be Amalia, imbued with new life and possibility, or a Meteorn, a creature of destruction. Uncertainty gnawed at him as he hoped fervently that the core wouldn't awaken as the very thing it had once been.

The machine's hum became almost unbearable, a visceral thrum that resonated through his bones, while the energy levels surged to previously untested limits, creating an atmosphere that felt almost oppressive.

[Construction Complete. Please inspect the body before finalization.]

With adrenaline coursing through him, Aiden rushed over to the container, his pulse pounding in his ears and his heart hammering against his ribcage. He swiftly activated the control panel, his gaze fixed on the android body within the chamber, ready for inspection. Every detail mattered now; the success of this audacious gamble rested on what lay before him.

Her appearance was no longer a human's. Her body was made of a black metal alloy, her eyes were a vibrant red, and her hair was a dark shade of purple. Her frame was thin, and her proportions were slender. This was not the older woman who had entered the room earlier. This was an entirely different person.

"This alloy... it's similar to the armor material Meteorn wear... It's... bonded to the surface of her skin..." Aiden frowned, his mind racing. He shook his head and continued his examination.

"She's stable, and she seems to be in perfect condition."

Aiden glanced up at the monitor, his heart racing in his chest. The machine was still operational, its gentle hum providing a sense of reassurance. The energy output displayed stable levels, and all the readings were within normal parameters. He let out a sigh of relief, a weight lifting off his shoulders, as he closed the container, sealing the android securely inside.

"Let's just hope she's still the Vice Minister in there, and not some rampaging monster," he muttered to himself, an uncharacteristic anxiety creeping into his thoughts.

As the machine continued its persistent hum, Aiden observed the energy output gradually decrease, signifying that the process was stabilizing. The atmosphere in the room began to settle, the erratic tension slowly dissipating.

The muted light flickered momentarily before fading, leaving Aiden in a subdued glow. He sank into his chair, feeling the fatigue wash over him, his body drained and his mind exhausted. It was hard to believe that everything had worked out; yet, he regretted the necessity of switching out the Tyrant core for a standard one midway through the operation. A glance at the display told him that the android had fully awakened.

With bated breath, he waited for the finalization process to complete and the doors to open. A distinct sound resonated through the room; the metallic clanking of hinges as the container began to shift. The door slowly slid open, and Aiden steeled himself, taking a deep breath as he approached the now-open container.

"Amalia... Can you hear me?" he called out, his voice steady yet laced with uncertainty.

"Y… Yes." The response was soft, wavering, as if it struggled to break free from a deep slumber.

"I need you to confirm something for me. I need you to identify yourself and your affiliation. Can you do that?" Aiden's tone was firm, but there was an undercurrent of apprehension.

"My name is... My name is Amalia... VolStenthorn, Vice Minister of the... the Schreadel Imperial Union's Ministry of Defense..." She spoke each word slowly, as if digging through layers of fog.

"And where are you now?" he pressed, his eyes searching her expression for any hint of recognition.

"I am... in the... in the facility located in... Zone 431-T-A." Her answers seemed disjointed, and Aiden felt a knot of worry forming in his stomach.

"What are you here to do?" he asked, determination fueling his desire to get the truth out.

"I'm here to investigate a missing person and... retrieve a core."

"Wrong. What did you come here to do?" His voice sharpened, the urgency palpable.

"I came here... here... I... I can't remember," she admitted, frustration evident in her faltering speech.

"Do you remember what you asked me to do?" Aiden pressed, anxiety leaking into his tone.

"An... an android? Did I ask you to make an android?" she replied, her confusion palpable.

"Yes. Do you remember what you told me?"

"I don't know... I don't remember..." Her voice was faint, trembling as if she were grappling with shadows in her mind.

"Amalia, what did you ask me to do?" he reiterated, his patience waning.

"I don't remember... I'm sorry, I'm sorry," she answered, her tone now imbued with genuine distress.

"What is the name of this project?" he continued, clinging to the hope that the next answer would reveal some clarity.

"The Nova Genesis Project. It's to create androids from... from humans?" she responded, hesitation creeping into her voice.

"No. Where do the cores come from?"

"Cores? From... the Meteorn," she said, her brow furrowing as if remembering a distant truth.

"What type of androids were created?"

"Humanoid androids," she answered, her brow still knotted with concentration.

"And why are they created?" Aiden's urgency intensified.

"For... for military applications," she stated, a note of certainty finally creeping back into her tone.

"Correct. Now, Amalia, can you tell me the code for the project's complete termination and erasure? It's a code only you and I know." His eyes bore into hers, waiting for the critical response.

"WX15-9992-1514," she stated, her voice now stronger.

"You are correct. You are the Vice Minister, Amalia VolStenthorn. I'll open the Prometheus container." He exhaled a deep sigh of relief and turned toward the terminal, relief flooding his senses. "I'm sorry I had to test you, Amalia, but I needed to be sure. I can't afford to make any mistakes here, not with everything at stake."

"It's alright, Aiden. I understand," she replied, her tone more assured.

"I've also prepared a new identity for you. I'll upload it to your systems," Aiden added, feeling a sense of responsibility settle over him.

"Thank you, Aiden," she said, her appreciation evident.

"You're welcome..." He hesitated for a moment before continuing, "Are you alright? You seem stressed."

"I'm always stressed; that's nothing new." He let out a weary sigh. "I'm more concerned about what you've become." The words hung heavily between them.

"It had to be done," she replied firmly as the container door opened entirely. "I need to get going."

Aiden remained silent as she walked out of the chamber, her movements fluid and graceful, a stark contrast to the turmoil he felt within. Her footsteps were eerily silent, leaving Aiden alone once more in the dimly lit room, contemplating the future that lay ahead.

"Did it?" He asked himself quietly after Amalia left. Aiden stared at the terminal quietly, his thoughts a mess, his emotions conflicted. He'd done what he could, and now, the rest was up to her. "I'm sorry, Amalia. I really am... that last question was a lie."

He silently entered the code, the screen flashed red, and the console beeped.

[Nova Genesis Project Termination started. Enter code again for confirmation]

Aiden took a deep breath and pressed enter. The console beeped again, and the screen went black.

"Goodbye, Amalia..."

He turned off the computer and left the room. The hallway was empty, the room was silent, the door closed, and the lights dimmed.

He made his way to the exit, his steps slow, his heart heavy. The facility was quiet, the atmosphere was cold, and the air was heavy.

Aiden stepped outside. The sky was dark, the clouds were grey, and the sun was hidden behind the clouds.

"I hope this all ends..." He whispered, a feeling of dread filling his chest.

The door closed behind him, and the facility went dark. The entrance was sealed.

The man's footsteps faded as he left it all behind.
