Chapter 50: The Island's Cry for Help
"We're saved!"
"Brother Itachi!"
"Itachi!"
This time, it wasn't just Chopper and Usopp clinging to Itachi—Nami had joined them, wrapping her arms around him in a desperate hug.
The Timid Trio had reunited.
"That was so dangerous! Our bodies almost floated all the way back to Fishman Island!" Usopp wiped his nose, glancing back at the churning sea behind them. In the distance, thunderstorms still raged and waves towered, but above the Sunny, the sky had finally cleared.
"Soda soda! We finally escaped from that terrifying underwater current!" Chopper wiped his nose as well—but unlike before, Chopper was in his human form, the form he'd taken to help control the ship during the crisis. His arm muscles bulged impressively as he hugged Itachi.
Usopp clung to one thigh. Chopper and Nami pressed against him from either side. All three were crying profusely.
"Um... Nami?"
Nami looked up, tears streaming. "What is it, Itachi?"
"You're squeezing me rather tightly."
He gestured subtly toward his ribs.
Nami released him immediately, face flushing.
Robin watched the scene with an amused smile.
Franky had already leaped onto the bow, striking a pose with his hands on his hips, sunglasses gleaming.
"Hey, all of you! Can't you show a little backbone?"
He thrust a thumb toward himself.
"We're in the New World now! This calls for courage!"
"That's right! The New World!" Luffy echoed, spreading his arms wide as if to embrace the horizon. "That adventure was amazing! Shishishishi!"
The Timid Trio descended upon him like avenging furies.
"YOU HAVE SOME NERVE SAYING THAT!" Nami's weather staff materialized in her hand.
"SODA SODA! YOU IDIOT CAPTAIN!" Chopper added a Kung Fu point kick for emphasis.
"I need to remind you what just happened, Luffy!" Usopp's long nose jabbed into Luffy's cheek repeatedly.
It turned out that after Itachi and Usopp had gone to the workshop, Luffy had discovered the enormous fishhook Usopp had been preparing. Always one for terrible ideas, Luffy had immediately baited it with the Sea King meat from Fishman Island and cast his line.
He'd caught something almost immediately—a massive fish that would have fed the crew for weeks.
But then an even bigger fish had swallowed the first one.
Luffy, delighted, kept pulling.
The fish kept getting bigger.
And bigger.
Until the thing on his line was dozens of times larger than the Thousand Sunny itself.
"Isn't this great?!" Luffy protested as the Timid Trio continued their assault.
"I think you have a fundamental misunderstanding of the word 'great'!" Nami's anger manifested as visible steam rising from her head.
She'd been in the bath when she'd felt the ship stop moving. Emerging to investigate, she'd found Luffy having already knocked out the colossal fish with a Rubber Pistol—just as a massive white current appeared on the horizon.
The White Dragon, Robin had explained calmly while everyone else panicked. A current so dangerous that anyone caught in it was guaranteed to die.
Luffy's response? "Let's go through it!"
Of course, no one agreed. But by the time they tried to escape, the giant fish Luffy had caught was already being dragged toward the current—and the Sunny was attached to the fish.
"Fortunately, Itachi was there..." Nami sniffled, fresh tears forming.
She recounted how Itachi had reacted instantly—summoning wave after wave of Water Dragon Bullets to carve an escape path through the current, creating just enough of an opening for Franky to steer them free under Nami's desperate navigation.
Itachi raised a hand modestly.
"Ah... I don't think it was entirely my doing."
Everyone turned to look at him.
"What do you mean?"
Itachi exhaled slowly, choosing his words.
"Robin told me about your previous adventures. From what I've heard..."
He glanced at Luffy.
"Following this captain seems to involve a great deal of... excitement."
The Timid Trio nodded vigorously.
"The fact that any of you are still alive," Itachi continued, "seems less about skill and more about fate."
The Timid Trio turned back to Luffy and resumed beating him with renewed vigor.
"YOU HEAR THAT?! EVEN ITACHI NOTICES!"
"AHHH! SORRY! SORRY!" Luffy's face had swollen to the size of a balloon, steam rising from his battered form.
"Well, regardless—we've arrived in the New World."
Robin gazed at the distant horizon, her expression thoughtful.
Nami looked down at the Log Pose in her hands. The three needles jumped erratically, none of them steady.
"The pointers here really are chaotic."
"Just set a course, Nami!" Franky had returned to the helm. "Find us an island we can actually dock at!"
"We can sail now." Nami nodded. Usopp and Sanji moved to raise the sails.
Luffy pulled himself together, bouncing back to his feet despite the beating.
"ALRIGHT! WE'RE HERE! THE NEW WORLD!"
"Shishishishi!"
"That resilience..." Itachi watched the captain bounce around the deck. "Impressive."
Robin leaned against the railing beside him, chin resting on her hand.
"He's always been like this. Nothing keeps him down for long."
"It's good." Itachi turned to face the horizon, joining Robin in watching the endless sea unfold before them.
New World. Adventure.
I wonder what strange things await.
The Thousand Sunny surged forward, cutting through the waves. Except for Zoro, who was napping against the mast, every crew member faced the horizon with anticipation.
"I wonder what's ahead! Is there an island made of meat?!"
Luffy had already climbed onto the Sunny's lion-headed bow, standing on its mane like a figurehead himself.
"THERE'S NO SUCH ISLAND!" Usopp shouted back.
But then—
Luffy, at the bow, suddenly felt the temperature shift.
"Hey... why is it getting hot?"
Chopper perked up. "I feel it too! I hate heat!"
The Sunny continued forward, and the temperature rose steadily. The air grew thick, heavy, uncomfortable.
Luffy suddenly stood straight, pointing.
"HEY EVERYONE! THERE'S AN ISLAND OVER THERE!"
The crew gathered at the bow.
In the distance, an island loomed—but it was unlike any they'd seen. Lightning forked across its skies. Dark clouds churned above it in perpetual storm. And as they drew closer, the sea around it actually steamed, the water nearly boiling.
Nami, Usopp, and Chopper screamed in unison.
"TERRIFYING!"
"THAT IS CLEARLY NOT A LANDABLE ISLAND!"
"ALRIGHT!" Luffy's voice cut through their panic. "I'VE DECIDED! WE'RE GOING TO THAT ISLAND!"
"ABSOLUTELY NOT!" Nami shucked off her deep-sea coat, now unnecessary. "That island has a volcano! The temperature is impossible! We can't land there!"
"It's fine! It's perfect!"
Luffy stood on the bow, grinning at the impossible island—
And then the Transponder Snail in the cabin rang.
Everyone turned.
The snail's expression was twisted in misery, its voice carrying desperate sobs.
"Someone's calling for help?" Sanji moved toward it first.
Luffy followed, reaching for the receiver.
Robin's hand shot out.
"Don't answer yet!"
She explained quickly—the dangers of emergency calls in the New World. SOS signals were often traps. Sometimes they were Navy lures, designed to bug the call and track the responder's location.
Usopp shuddered. "Good thing Robin knows this! We could've been in serious trouble!"
Luffy picked up the receiver.
"Moshi moshi! I'm Luffy!"
"Monkey D. Luffy!"
"The man who's going to be Pirate King! Who are you?!"
Silence fell over the deck.
Everyone froze.
Itachi drew a slow breath.
This captain...
He sighed.
"His energy is... excessive."
