Chapter 172: Itachi's Command — The Elephant Lord Strikes BackThe Sea Below Zou
Jack stood at the bow of his flagship, his massive frame casting a shadow across the deck. Bandages still wrapped his torso where the Admirals had struck him. His breath came in ragged, wet gasps. But his eyes—those small, cruel eyes—burned with undiminished fury.
"FIRE! All ships, concentrate maximum firepower on a single point! BRING THIS BEAST DOWN!"
The five warships of the Beast Pirates' remnant fleet unleashed everything they had. Cannons roared. Shells screamed through the air and detonated against the Elephant Lord's leg in blooms of fire and shrapnel. The ancient creature's skin—thick as castle walls, weathered by a millennium of ceaseless walking—began to crack and bleed under the sustained barrage.
The younger crew members cheered as the great beast bellowed. "It's working! The elephant's actually hurting!"
"OF COURSE IT IS!" Jack's tusks gleamed as he grinned. "A single bee can drive an ordinary elephant into a frenzy. Did you think this fossil would be any different?!"
He strode to the bow, his voice rising with contemptuous triumph. "This creature has walked the seas for a thousand years. A THOUSAND YEARS! Its hide should have rotted to pulp by now! And yet they call it a legend? They call it IMMORTAL?!"
His fist slammed against the railing.
"It's just a beast that hasn't died yet. Nothing more."
"AIM CAREFULLY! While it's on its knees—hit it in the face! Gouge out its eyes! Cut out its tongue! Rip it open from trunk to tail and leave it floating as a warning!"
His voice dropped to a savage growl.
"Every mink on that island will die without a grave."
Zou — The Town
"What's happening to the Elephant Lord?!"
"It's NEVER roared like this before! It's NEVER shaken like this!"
Inuarashi and Nekomamushi were already in motion, organizing the evacuation of Mink civilians with the practiced efficiency of rulers who had faced catastrophe before. Franky hoisted collapsed beams. Zoro cut falling debris out of the air. The town, already scarred from Jack's previous invasion, was tearing itself apart under the elephant's convulsions.
But Robin, perched on the Black Fire Crow above the chaos, was not watching the destruction. She was watching Itachi.
He stood motionless amid the trembling earth. His face was tilted toward the sky. His eyes—the Mangekyō Sharingan blazing—were fixed on something far beyond the clouds. His expression was one she had never seen before. Not fear. Not pain. Something closer to... recognition.
"Itachi! What's wrong?!"
Before he could answer, Nami screamed.
"ROBIN! LUFFY TOO!"
Luffy had collapsed to his knees. Both hands pressed desperately against his ears. His face contorted with pain.
"Itachi!" Robin's voice cracked. "Luffy!"
"Luffy!" Itachi's head snapped toward his captain. "You hear it too?!"
"IT'S SO LOUD! I'VE NEVER HEARD ANYTHING THIS LOUD! MAKE IT STOP!"
"Hey—what are you hearing?! We can't hear anything!" Nami shouted.
Inuarashi and Nekomamushi had frozen mid-evacuation. They stared at Itachi and Luffy—and at Momonosuke, who was writhing in Kin'emon's arms with his hands clamped over his ears—with expressions of utter astonishment.
"They can hear it too?!"
All three of them. All three were hearing the same voice.
"HURRY!!!" The command thundered through their skulls.
"WHO ARE YOU?!" Luffy screamed at the sky.
"I've never heard a voice this loud!" Momonosuke sobbed, tears streaming down his face. "Make it stop! Please!"
The voice came again. "HURRY!! If you are here... GIVE ME YOUR COMMAND!"
"What command?! What are you talking about?!" Luffy yelled. "Answer me first! WHO ARE YOU?!"
"Calm down, Luffy." Itachi's voice had steadied. The shock that had paralyzed him moments before was gone, replaced by something cold and focused. "We can't communicate with this voice. It can't hear our questions. It can only repeat its demand."
"What's happening?!" Nami grabbed his arm. "Itachi, Luffy—what are you hearing?!"
"A voice. Enormous. Older than anything I've ever encountered. And it's asking—demanding—to be given an order."
"An order?!"
"Momonosuke! Itachi-dono! Luffy-dono!" Pedro's voice cut through the chaos. The jaguar mink had climbed to the highest stable point above the crumbling street. "Lord Oden and Gol D. Roger both reported the same phenomenon! A voice too loud to understand, impossible to converse with!"
All eyes turned to the jaguar.
"Roger?! Oden?!" Law had just finished teleporting a family of minks out of a collapsing building. "What are you talking about?!"
Momonosuke's scream stopped all conversation.
"IT'S JACK!"
"What?!"
"I can see him! I don't know how, but I can SEE him! In my head! Five warships! They're attacking the elephant!"
"So the bastard survived after all." Nekomamushi's claws extended. "Get every boat in the harbor! We'll fight him on the water if we have to—"
The Elephant Lord shuddered. Not the convulsive tremors of before—this was deeper. Stronger. A vibration that resonated in the bones of every living thing on Zou.
And in Momonosuke's mind, a new image formed. Not Jack's warships. Not the cannon fire. Something vaster. Something ancient beyond comprehension.
"The voice..." Momonosuke's tears had stopped. His voice came out small, awed. "It's the elephant. It's ALWAYS been the elephant. The Elephant Lord is the one speaking to us!"
"What?!" The exclamation came from a dozen throats at once.
"The Elephant Lord can TALK?!"
"A long time ago," Momonosuke translated, his voice trembling, "I committed a sin. An unforgivable sin. As punishment... I was condemned only to walk. Never to act. Never to fight. Never to defend myself."
The boy's eyes widened.
"But now... NOW... it's begging us. It's begging for permission. For an ORDER. It wants to fight back!"
Silence.
"The Elephant Lord wants US to give it orders?!"
"Momonosuke." Kin'emon knelt beside the boy. "What should we—"
"It can hear you!" Luffy grabbed Momonosuke by the shoulders. "I don't know how, but it can hear YOU! Tell it to fight! If that elephant dies, we ALL fall into the sea! Tell it, Momo! NOW!"
"I—I—how loud do I have to shout?! What if it can't hear me?! What if I do it wrong?!"
"IT DOESN'T MATTER! THE LOUDER THE BETTER! JUST TELL IT TO—"
"Wait."
Itachi's voice was quiet. But it cut through the chaos like a blade through silk.
His eyes—still blazing with the Mangekyō pattern—had gone distant. Focused on something no one else could perceive. His lips moved, but the words he spoke were not directed at the crew. They were directed at the voice. The vast, ancient, desperate voice that only he and Luffy and Momonosuke could hear.
"You... also committed an unforgivable sin?"
The voice stopped.
And then—
"YOU!!!"
The Elephant Lord's mental roar was so loud that Itachi physically staggered. Luffy and Momonosuke cried out in pain.
"IT'S YOU! IT'S ACTUALLY YOU!"
The ancient creature's composure—maintained through a thousand years of silent suffering—shattered in an instant. Joy. Terror. Hope. Despair. A tidal wave of emotion crashed against Itachi's consciousness.
"I BEG YOU! GRANT ME PERMISSION TO FIGHT BACK! LET ME DEFEND MYSELF! LET ME PROTECT THE ONES ON MY BACK!"
"I don't understand your situation." Itachi's mental voice was calm. Measured. Even in the face of this impossible entity, his composure held. "But if you wish to fight back... that decision belongs to your own will. Not mine."
"YOUR SERVANT OBEYS!!!"
The Elephant Lord's cry of exultation shook the heavens.
Across Zou, every mink, every human, every living creature felt the shift. The elephant was no longer trembling in pain. It was MOVING. Not the slow, eternal plod of its endless punishment—but something swift. Something purposeful. Something that had been restrained for a thousand years and was finally, FINALLY being unleashed.
"Momo! Did you give the order?!" Luffy shook the boy.
"I—no! I haven't said anything yet! What's happening?!"
The answer came not in words, but in a vision that bloomed simultaneously in Itachi's mind.
The Elephant Lord's trunk—that appendage larger than mountains, stronger than any weapon forged by human hands—rose from the sea. It hung in the air for a single, terrible moment. And then it FELL.
Jack's five warships—the full remaining strength of the Beast Pirates' expeditionary force—were swatted from the ocean like toys. Wood splintered. Metal screamed. Men shouted and died in the space between heartbeats. The sea where the fleet had been became a churning maelstrom of wreckage and foam. The bombardment that had threatened to bring down a living legend was silenced in a single, devastating blow.
On the shattered coast of Zou, the Straw Hats and their allies stared at the horizon in stunned silence.
And Itachi Uchiha opened his eyes. The voice was gone now. The presence had withdrawn. But the warmth of that final cry—YOUR SERVANT OBEYS—lingered in his mind like the echo of a bell.
"It fought back," he said quietly. "The elephant... defended itself."
