Chapter 12 - Chapter 12: A New Beginning

Chapter 12: A New Beginning

Morning light slowly crept across the horizon, painting the sky in the soft colors of dawn.

The insistent beeping of his alarm clock dragged Ryuzen from the depths of sleep. His eyes opened slowly, consciousness returning from the dream world to reality.

He sat up—

And the world went silent.

Not the ordinary silence of a quiet morning. Something deeper. The usual sounds of the village—distant voices, footsteps on streets, merchants opening their shops—had all vanished. Faded into nothing.

Breathing surrounded him. Soft as dawn breeze, the entire world seemed to have paused, holding its breath.

And in that silence, perception bloomed.

Like an invisible spider's web, his senses stretched outward, covering most of Konoha. He could feel presences everywhere—faint impressions of people waking, moving, living. The web extended far beyond his normal range, touching things he'd never sensed before.

Then, as quickly as it came, it vanished.

The sounds of the village rushed back. The moment passed.

But Ryuzen knew it hadn't been imagination.

He pressed one hand to his forehead, the battle between Mihawk and the red-haired man still vivid in his mind. "Is that... the realm of a great swordsman?" His voice was soft, awed. "That kind of power... it's almost inhuman."

The duel he'd witnessed was the most astonishing thing he'd experienced in seven years. Truly worthy of Whitebeard's praise—"just like yesterday." That battle hadn't just broadened his horizons. It had shown him, for the first time, the true gap between a skilled swordsman and a great one.

Though Mihawk and Shanks were still, technically, swordsmen at that point in their lives, they wouldn't remain so for long. Through experiencing that fight from Mihawk's perspective, Ryuzen had glimpsed the realm of greatness ahead of time. And the Mihawk of his visions—already far stronger than Ryuzen currently was—could see it too.

The insights gained were immeasurable.

He checked his status.

A significant jump. Good.

Ryuzen rose, mood buoyant despite the early hour. He washed quickly, then created a shadow clone, sending it to the Academy to handle the graduation assessment in his place.

As always, he made his way to the training hall.

Time for sword meditation.

Since advancing to the realm of the swordsman and mastering the technique of "cutting," Ryuzen's training had shifted. Basic swordsmanship practice was no longer necessary. His growth now depended on deepening his ability to perceive the breath of all things.

Sword Zen—meditation with the blade—was the primary method.

It was tedious work. Sitting motionless for hours, clearing the mind, reaching for something just beyond perception. People without patience couldn't endure it. But the benefits were real. It tempered the spirit. Cultivated the character. Sharpened the senses.

And since awakening to the breath of all things, Ryuzen had come to love it.

The calmer his mind, the more breathing he could hear. In the state of Zen, he could feel his realm slowly, steadily improving.

Time dissolved as he sat, Shigure Kintoki resting across his lap, breath evening out until he seemed almost asleep—yet more aware than ever.

The morning passed.

When the shadow clone entered the training hall, carrying a lunch box in one hand and a forehead protector in the other, Ryuzen was just emerging from his meditation.

He took the lunch box—made specially by Hinata, as always—and glanced briefly at the forehead protector before releasing the clone technique.

Information flowed into him: the graduation assessment, the faces of his classmates, Iruka's proud smile. And confirmation that Hinata would come find him later.

He ate in the dining room, cleaned the lunch box afterward, and waited.

The forehead protector rested in his hands as he sat, eyes half-closed, almost dozing.

"Ryuzen-kun..."

Her voice came softly, as it always did.

He opened his eyes. Hinata stood in the doorway, slightly out of breath, a small ring of keys in her hand. Her lavender eyes held that familiar warmth, that gentle affection that had become as natural to him as breathing.

Ryuzen smiled. "Let's go."

"Mm." She smiled back, nodding.

They left together, walking side by side through the village streets toward the Ninja Academy.

Graduation photos needed to be taken for the official ninja records. Ryuzen could have sent a clone—it would have been easy. But this felt significant. A milestone worth experiencing in person.

Besides, after witnessing Mihawk's legendary battle, his emotions had been running high. A walk through the village, a moment of normalcy, felt right.

Tomorrow would bring new challenges. New dangers. The official beginning of the storm that would reshape history.

Ryuzen reached out and took Hinata's hand.

Her small body trembled at the contact. A blush crept across her cheeks, and she glanced at him shyly from the corner of her eye.

He pretended not to notice, staring straight ahead.

After a moment, her fingers tightened around his.

A small smile tugged at Ryuzen's lips. He shifted his grip, intertwining their fingers properly—like a couple in love.

"Ryuzen-kun? Hinata? You two...?"

They'd barely reached the Academy entrance when a familiar voice stopped them.

Yamanaka Ino stood frozen, eyes wide, staring at their linked hands. Her gaze traveled from their fingers up to Hinata's crimson face, and a knowing smile spread across her features.

"Ohhh... I see now." Ino covered her mouth, laughter dancing in her eyes. "So that's why our Lord Ryuzen always ignored every other girl. Someone already snagged him!"

"Y-Yamanaka-san..." Hinata's face burned. Steam practically rose from her head as her embarrassment skyrocketed.

Ryuzen didn't react at all. He simply held tighter to Hinata's hand as she tried to pull away, nodded politely to Ino, and continued walking—pulling his flustered girlfriend through the school gates.

Ino watched them go, still smiling.

"They really hid this well." She spoke to no one in particular. "But looking at them from behind... they actually match perfectly."

There was no jealousy in her voice. No envy.

Years ago, as a child, Ino had been part of the group of girls who flocked around Ryuzen. But that phase hadn't lasted. His constant rejection, combined with the natural dignity of the top student, had intimidated most of them into silence.

Ino herself had persisted longer than most—not out of romantic interest, really, but simple childhood curiosity about the mysterious boy. But eventually, between his continued coldness and her falling out with Sakura over Sasuke, her attention had shifted entirely.

She'd honestly thought none of the girls in their class could ever capture someone like Ryuzen. He seemed untouchable. Above such things.

And yet—

The quietest girl in the class. The shyest. The one with the weakest presence.

Hinata Hyuga had somehow crossed the finish line while everyone else was still trying to figure out where the race began.

Ino shook her head, still smiling.

"Hinata... you really are something else."

Inside the Academy, Ryuzen and Hinata made their way through the familiar halls. Students rushed past, excited about graduation, clutching their new forehead protectors, chattering about the future.

Hinata's hand never left his.

Her blush had faded slightly, replaced by something softer. Happier. She still couldn't quite meet anyone's eyes, but she didn't try to pull away either.

They reached the photography station. A long line of new genin waited to have their official photos taken for the village records.

Ryuzen scanned the crowd.

There was Naruto, practically vibrating with excitement, his new forehead protector tied proudly around his head. Sakura stood nearby, chatting with Ino, who'd caught up. Sasuke leaned against a wall alone, radiating his usual aura of isolation.

And there, in the corner, stood three familiar figures—

Shikamaru, looking bored as always. Choji, already eating. And Kiba with Akamaru, arguing loudly about something meaningless.

Team 10. The future Ino-Shika-Cho formation.

Ryuzen's gaze lingered on them for a moment, then moved on.

His eyes found the jonin standing at the front of the room, clipboards in hand, observing the new graduates with various expressions.

One with silver hair and a mask. Copy Ninja Kakashi.

A woman with an unusual appearance and a stern expression. Kurenai Yuhi.

A large man with sunglasses and a perpetually smiling face. Might Guy.

The jonin instructors. The ones who would shape the next generation.

Tomorrow, the survival exercises would begin. Tomorrow, the real test would start.

But for now—

Ryuzen squeezed Hinata's hand gently. She looked up at him, questioning.

He just smiled.

For now, this was enough.
