Chapter 25: Returning HomeDawn Meditation

Ryuzen sat in sword meditation until dawn.

Throughout the night, he had focused on the Breath of All Things—its scope expanding ever wider, the number of breaths he could perceive growing, each one heavier and more distinct than before.

The experiences from the spiritual world settled into place. Mihawk's battles against powerful opponents, the emotions after each victory, the moments of realization mid-combat—all of it integrated into Ryuzen's own understanding. His mind grew sharper. His will strengthened.

When he sensed movement within the house—Hinata's breathing shifting as she woke—he rose gracefully from the roof and slipped back through the window.

In the room, Hinata had already dressed.

When she saw him return, her face immediately flushed crimson. She lowered her head, unable to meet his gaze.

"Let's wash up and eat something." Ryuzen crossed to her, raising a hand to rest on her head. He ruffled her hair gently. "After Kurenai-sensei finishes with the client, we'll return to the village."

"Mm." Her response was barely audible.

She walked toward the bathroom.

Ryuzen followed.

Neither mentioned the previous night.

Ryuzen chose silence because he knew Hinata's limits—if he brought it up now, she would faint again just as she always did. Hinata remained silent from sheer embarrassment.

Before Ryuzen, Hinata had always been completely yielding. Even if he demanded something far more extreme than a kiss, she would never blame him. It was precisely because of this trusting nature that Ryuzen treasured her so deeply—a gem he could never bear to tarnish, especially when unconsciousness claimed her.

After washing, they ate preserved food in the room to settle their stomachs.

Then together, they left and made their way to the living area.

Tazuna's family home stood empty—no sign of the bridge builder or his daughter. Kurenai and Shino's auras were also absent.

Ryuzen and Hinata stepped outside for a brief walk through the unfamiliar neighborhood.

When they returned, Kurenai and Shino waited in the living room, clearly prepared for departure.

"Pack your things." Kurenai rose at their entrance. "We're heading back to the village."

"Yes, sensei." Hinata hurried toward their room.

Moments later, she emerged with her backpack and Ryuzen's tachi.

He accepted the blade, securing it at his waist, and the four departed together.

Tazuna never appeared to see them off.

At the docks, a boatman waited as arranged. They boarded the small sailboat and left the Land of Waves behind.

Mission Report

Another full day of travel brought Team 8 to Konoha's gates.

They proceeded directly to the Hokage's office, where Kurenai delivered a complete and honest report of the mission's events.

The Third Hokage listened in silence, pipe trailing smoke, aged eyes occasionally flickering toward Ryuzen.

When the report concluded, he made his decision.

The mission classification would be adjusted from C-rank to B-rank.

In truth, the actual difficulty had approached A-rank—but A-rank missions involved matters of national significance, escorting VIPs, or engaging enemy forces in open conflict. Tazuna qualified as none of these.

However, the appearance of a missing-nin from Kirigakure—the notorious "Demon" Momochi Zabuza—elevated the mission's danger sufficiently to warrant B-rank status.

Despite completing their first B-rank mission, Team 8's compensation remained at C-rank levels.

Tazuna could offer no additional payment. Gato's death had freed the Land of Waves from its tyrant, but it had also unleashed chaos—other villains scrambling for power, nobles grasping for Gato's abandoned wealth. The bridge remained unfinished. The country remained impoverished.

There would be no surplus funds for generous rewards.

Ryuzen cared little about the money.

If wealth mattered to him, he wouldn't have sent Haku after Gato without demanding compensation. For ordinary people, sudden fortune brought more danger than benefit—just look at Gato himself. One of the world's wealthiest men, and what had it bought him? Ronin and missing-nin whose loyalty evaporated the moment danger appeared.

Zabuza himself, in another timeline, had nearly killed Gato for disrespect. If Gato had somehow hired a Kage-level protector, that protector would simply have taken everything.

Someone like Kakuzu, for instance.

Ryuzen's ambitions had long since transcended monetary concerns.

Hinata and Shino came from established clans—for them, the experience mattered far more than the pay.

A Quiet Goodbye

After receiving their mission rewards, Team 8 disbanded beneath the Hokage Building.

Ryuzen and Hinata walked side by side through the village streets, silence stretching between them—comfortable, familiar, needing no words.

They reached Ryuzen's door.

Hinata prepared to continue toward her own home.

"Hinata."

She stopped. Turned. Lifted her gaze.

Crimson eyes met lavender-tinged white.

Warmth pressed against her lips.

Brief as a dragonfly skimming water—there and gone before she could process it. Nothing like last night's deeper exploration. Just... contact. Pressure. Warmth.

Then Ryuzen was gone, his door closing quietly behind him.

"Ryu... Ryuzen-kun..."

Hinata stared at the closed door. Her face burned. Blood rushed to her head. The world spun.

But somehow—somehow—she didn't faint.

The thought that they were on a public street, that anyone might have seen, sent fresh waves of heat through her cheeks. She lowered her head quickly and hurried away from his door.

Walking home, her crimson face carried a shy smile.

No one else knew the joy hidden in her heart.<|end▁of▁thinking|># Chapter 25: Returning Home
