The frantic pace of Dhaka city no longer intimidated Ariyan; instead, it fueled his fire. With only two months left for the HSC (Higher Secondary Certificate) exams, the college corridors were filled with nothing but the low hum of students reciting lessons. In his small mess room, Ariyan had built a kingdom of his own. The thick textbooks of Physics, Chemistry, and Higher Mathematics arranged on his desk were now his closest companions. But beneath this calm sea of academic success, a massive volcano was simmering—one that Ariyan had yet to notice.
One afternoon, while Ariyan was memorizing organic chemistry reactions in the college library, Raisa approached him. Today, there was a strange restlessness in her eyes. She sat in the chair opposite him and whispered in a low, trembling voice, "Ariyan, I'm really scared."
Ariyan shifted his gaze from his book. "Why, Raisa? Your preparation is excellent."
"It's not about the studies, Ariyan. Turjo told me that Sharif is planning something big this time. He was seen with some political goons from outside the college last night. They are conspiring to stop you from even appearing for the exams," Raisa's voice was thick with suppressed tears.
Ariyan offered a faint smile. "Raisa, life itself is a war. Sharif is just a minor obstacle. My parents' prayers are with me."
Suddenly, Raisa reached out and gripped Ariyan's hand. "Ariyan, why don't you understand? What will happen to me if something happens to you? I... I don't want to lose you."
In the silence of that library, Raisa's confession created a storm inside Ariyan's chest. He realized that her affection wasn't just friendship; its depth went much further. But Ariyan remembered the humble house in Shantipur, his father's shattered dreams, and the dark nights in the mess. He gently pulled his hand away and said, "We have only one goal right now, Raisa—the results. We cannot let ourselves be swept away by emotions."
Raisa looked at him with wounded eyes and hurried out of the library. Ariyan knew he might have hurt her, but he also knew that losing focus at this moment meant total defeat.
Meanwhile, Sharif was intoxicated by his thirst for revenge. Ariyan's courage and his perceived intimacy with Raisa haunted him every night. He sat in a dark alley across from the mess with his henchmen, plotting his final move.
"Listen, Showkat," Sharif shared his sinister plan. "If we can get Ariyan caught by the police once, his career is over. He won't be able to sit for the HSC exams."
The following night, as Ariyan was returning to the mess after having dinner, a group of four or five masked men suddenly surrounded him in a dark alley. Before he could react, a heavy wooden club struck the back of his head. Ariyan collapsed onto the pavement. In the darkness, he could only hear Sharif's demonic laughter.
They were trying to plant illegal drugs and a local pistol in Ariyan's pockets to frame him. Just then, a loud commotion erupted. Turjo and Jasim Bhai appeared with a group of people. Turjo had been keeping a close watch on Sharif's movements for days.
"Run! People are coming!" Showkat screamed, and the masked figures vanished into the shadows, but not before they had dealt a severe blow to Ariyan's head.
When Ariyan was rushed to the hospital, blood was seeping through his bandages. Raisa rushed to the hospital like a madwoman the moment she heard the news. When Ariyan regained consciousness, he found her sitting by his bedside, weeping silently.
"Ariyan, are you okay?" Raisa sobbed.
Ariyan spoke in a weak, raspy voice, "I won't lose, Raisa. Men like Sharif can hurt my body, but they don't have the power to kill my resolve."
The next day, the news spread throughout the college. The Principal himself visited the hospital. This time, the action against Sharif was swift and severe—he was permanently expelled from the college. However, before leaving, Sharif made one last venomous move. He called Ariyan's father in the village and told him that Ariyan had become a criminal in Dhaka and was behind bars.
Ariyan's mother called him, crying hysterically. It took Ariyan a long time to convince her that everything was fine. Despite the doctor's orders for bed rest, he began studying with a bandage wrapped around his head. He studied for eighteen hours a day, driven by one single thought—he had to give Sharif his final answer through the examination paper.
On the night before the exams, Ariyan pulled out his diary. The pages were now witnesses to a bloody history of struggle. He wrote:
"Today my body is bruised, but my mind is stronger than ever. Sharif wanted to paralyze me physically, but he didn't know that a student's true strength lies not in his spine, but in his brain and his pen. The love Raisa has shown me has taught me to live anew. But I will succeed first, and then I will think of love. Father, Mother, pray for me—that your son can carve his name into the pages of history."
The HSC exams began. When Ariyan entered the exam hall with a bandaged head, everyone—from the invigilators to the students—stared in awe. His hand was trembling, but his pen did not stop. He wrote every answer as if he were striking down an enemy.
On the day of the Physics exam, a major problem arose. Halfway through the exam, the wound on his head began to bleed again. Raisa, sitting in the next row, turned pale with fear. But Ariyan turned his head slightly and smiled at her. He wiped the blood with a tissue and continued writing.
When the final exam ended and Ariyan walked out of the hall, there was a strange, divine peace in his eyes. Raisa and Turjo were waiting for him at the gate.
Turjo hugged him tightly. "You did it, buddy! You are a true hero of this war!"
Raisa stood before him, her eyes filled with nothing but pride today. "Ariyan, today you didn't just finish an exam; you won the first phase of the greatest battle of your life."
The ninth chapter ends with a heart-pounding wait. The period before the results was a time of silent struggle for Ariyan. Would he be able to find his name among the top scorers in the country? Would Sharif's conspiracy be completely buried? And would Ariyan finally be able to answer Raisa's unspoken love?
