Everyone sleeps in different ways
not just positions, but methods.
Some sleep with their eyes wide open,
most with their eyes closed,
and a few somewhere in between.
I close my eyes when I'm tired,
but most times they stay open,
wandering through worlds I've imagined,
finding peace in thoughts that feel softer than reality.
Sometimes I sleep to feel the closest thing to death
still, breath steady, body quiet
while my mind runs through another world,
or maybe the same world,
just lived in a different form.
In that place, the air is still.
I don't remember my heartbeat,
only how I move from place to place
just by thinking, not running.
Other times I sleep with my eyes closed
but sink into imaginations that calm me
more than rest ever could.
Maybe we don't sleep just to escape.
Maybe sleep is a reminder
that the peace we find there
was meant to be carried back
into the chaos we wake up to.
