Chapter 31 - Closer Than Expected

The café wasn't far from school.

Close enough to feel familiar.

Crowded enough to feel safe.

Ariana arrived early.

Fifteen minutes early.

She told herself it was because she didn't want to be late.

But truthfully—

She needed time to breathe.

She had changed outfits twice.

Finally settling on a simple blue top and jeans.

Not too noticeable.

Not too plain.

Her hands felt colder than usual.

She ordered water just to have something in front of her.

Her phone buzzed.

UnknownUser: Here?

Her heart jumped.

SilentStar15: Yes.

Pause.

Then—

UnknownUser: Don't panic.

Too late.

Her eyes instinctively lifted from her phone.

The café was busy.

Students laughing.

A couple arguing softly.

A group of boys near the entrance.

Then—

Her phone buzzed again.

UnknownUser: In front of you.

Her breathing slowed.

Slowly—

Very slowly—

She looked toward the glass door.

And saw him.

Tall.

Much taller than she expected.

Dark hair slightly messy in a careless way.

Broad shoulders.

Confident posture.

He wasn't looking around nervously.

He wasn't hiding.

He was just standing there—

Calm.

Watching her.

For a second—

Her brain refused to connect anything.

No.

This couldn't be him.

She had imagined someone ordinary.

Maybe quiet.

Maybe average.

Someone who blended into a classroom corner.

But this boy—

He stood out.

Her phone buzzed again.

UnknownUser: You're staring.

Her breath caught.

She quickly looked down at her screen.

Her fingers shook slightly.

SilentStar15: Stop joking.

Pause.

Then—

UnknownUser: Blue top. Third table from the door. Nervous hands.

Her heart dropped.

Slowly—

She looked up again.

This time—

He tilted his head slightly.

Not smiling fully.

Just enough.

Like he had been waiting for her to understand.

Her pulse raced wildly.

This was him.

This tall.

Handsome.

Confident boy.

This was the same person who had written—

"I love you."

Her mind spun.

How had she never noticed him before?

How had she walked past him in corridors without looking twice?

He took one step closer.

Not too close.

Just enough to close the distance.

Her heart pounded harder.

She didn't stand.

She didn't move.

She just stared.

Because the reality felt too different from imagination.

Her phone buzzed once more.

UnknownUser: Thought I'd look different?

She swallowed.

Her throat felt dry.

She typed slowly—

SilentStar15: I didn't imagine anything.

Pause.

Then—

UnknownUser: Liar.

A faint smile appeared on his face.

Not arrogant.

Not playful.

Just… certain.

And suddenly—

She realized something terrifying.

He wasn't nervous.

She was.

He had always known her.

Watched her.

Recognized her.

While she had never truly looked.

And now—

He was standing in front of her.

Real.

Not text.

Not typing dots.

Not hidden.

Real.

Her heart wasn't calm.

It wasn't soft.

It was loud.

Uncontrolled.

And for the first time—

She didn't know if she was more shocked by how handsome he was…

Or by the fact that a small part of her—

Wasn't disappointed.
