Chapter 13 - Place That Should Not Exist

The crack in the sky never appeared visually.

No one screamed.

No buildings collapsed.

The world continued like nothing had happened.

Yet Arjun felt it constantly.

Like pressure deep underwater.

Every breath carried weight.

They left the park without speaking much. Words felt unnecessary when both of them sensed the same invisible tension crawling through reality.

Cars moved normally along the road, but Arjun noticed small inconsistencies now.

Reflections lagged behind movement.

Footsteps sometimes made sound before touching the ground.

And shadows… shadows hesitated.

The shadow inside his mind spoke quietly.

Your perception is synchronizing with deeper layers.

That doesn't sound healthy.

It is irreversible.

Great.

Mira walked beside him, hands inside her jacket pockets.

So what happens in Phase Three?

Before the shadow could answer, Arjun's phone vibrated violently.

Not once.

Continuously.

The screen flashed white.

NEW LOCATION UNLOCKED

Coordinates appeared underneath.

No map name.

No description.

Just a blinking point less than two kilometers away.

Mira leaned closer.

That looks like an old district.

Arjun frowned.

There's nothing there.

Correction, the shadow said. There is something you were previously unable to perceive.

A cold curiosity replaced fear.

So now I can see hidden places too?

Yes.

They followed the coordinates through narrow streets where fewer people walked. Buildings grew older, paint peeling from walls, windows dusty and forgotten.

The city noise slowly faded behind them.

Even the air felt heavier.

After fifteen minutes, they reached a dead-end street.

Or at least it should have been one.

Between two abandoned buildings stood a narrow alley Arjun was certain had never existed before.

Dark.

Silent.

Waiting.

His phone confirmed arrival.

ACCESS GRANTED

Mira hesitated.

You're sure about this?

No.

He stepped forward anyway.

The moment they entered the alley, sound disappeared completely.

Not reduced.

Gone.

Their footsteps made no noise.

Wind stopped.

Even breathing felt muted.

Halfway through, the world behind them blurred slightly, like an image losing focus.

Mira noticed it too.

I don't think we can go back the same way.

The shadow responded calmly.

Correct.

Good to know after we entered.

At the end of the alley stood a door.

No building connected to it.

Just a single metal door standing upright against empty space.

Its surface looked old yet untouched by rust or dust.

Arjun felt recognition he couldn't explain.

Like remembering a dream he never had.

His hand moved toward the handle.

The phone displayed a warning.

ENTRY WILL ALTER EXISTENCE STATUS

He paused.

Alter how?

The shadow answered.

You will no longer be classified as an accidental anomaly.

You will become a participant.

Mira looked at him carefully.

That sounds permanent.

Arjun stared at the door.

Every instinct told him this moment mattered more than anything so far.

Behind him was confusion.

Ahead was truth.

Or something worse.

He exhaled slowly and pushed the door open.

Darkness swallowed them instantly.

For a brief second, Arjun felt weightless, like falling through silence itself.

Then light returned.

They stood inside a massive hall stretching endlessly in all directions.

No walls.

No ceiling.

Only floating structures made of faint glowing lines, forming shapes that constantly rearranged themselves.

Symbols drifted through the air like slow-moving stars.

And figures walked there.

Dozens of people.

Some young.

Some old.

All carrying the same expression.

Confusion mixed with quiet acceptance.

One of them noticed Arjun and froze.

You're new, the man said softly.

Arjun looked around.

Where are we?

The man hesitated before answering.

This is where erased people eventually arrive.

A chill ran through Arjun's spine.

Mira whispered.

So everyone here… was forgotten?

The man nodded.

But something about Arjun made him step back slightly.

Wait… he said slowly. You're still connected to the outside world.

The shadow inside Arjun spoke with rare seriousness.

You were not meant to enter this place yet.

Arjun frowned.

Then why could I?

Silence followed.

Even the floating symbols seemed to slow.

Finally, the shadow answered.

Because the system no longer knows where you belong.

Arjun turned slowly, taking in the endless hall filled with forgotten existences.

For the first time, he realized something terrifying.

He wasn't just surviving the erasure anymore.

He had stepped into its source.

And somewhere far beyond this impossible place…

Something noticed his arrival immediately.
