Chapter 40 - Aftermath

Silence returned slowly to Astral City.

Smoke drifted through the air where battles had raged hours before. Broken platforms repaired themselves as golden construction fields moved across damaged areas like living light.

The invasion was over.

For now.

Arjun opened his eyes to a white ceiling.

Soft light. Quiet room. The faint hum of energy flowing through walls.

He tried to sit up.

Pain immediately reminded him that was a bad idea.

Easy, Mira said gently.

He turned his head.

She sat beside the bed, arms folded but relief clear in her eyes.

You were unconscious for almost a day.

Kael leaned against the wall eating something.

Correction. Twenty-three hours and forty minutes. I counted because everyone kept saying dramatic things about you possibly dying.

Arjun blinked.

Good to know priorities stayed normal.

Lyra stood near the window, watching the floating city outside.

Your synchronization exceeded predicted limits. Survival probability was low.

Arjun sighed.

Comforting.

The door opened.

Seraphine walked in carrying a small glowing device.

Glad to see you awake. The Council wants confirmation you're still alive before they start arguing again.

He frowned slightly.

Arguing?

She smirked.

Half of them think you're humanity's greatest hope. The other half think you're a walking apocalypse.

Kael nodded.

Honestly fair assessment.

Seraphine handed Arjun the device. Golden light scanned him briefly.

Stability restored. Synchronization residue remains… interesting.

She looked at him seriously.

You reached partial Guardian Synchronization during combat. No human has done that in centuries.

Arjun stared at his hand.

It didn't feel powerful.

It felt… right.

Lyra turned from the window.

Alignment between identity and Origin Flow achieved temporarily.

Mira smiled faintly.

In simple words, you did something impossible.

Before Arjun could respond, the wall screen activated automatically.

Council summons.

Seraphine sighed.

No rest for heroes.

Moments later, they stood again inside the central tower chamber.

The Council watched him differently now.

Not curiosity.

Respect.

The silver-haired councilor spoke first.

Arjun Vale, your actions prevented Astral City's سقوط.

She paused briefly.

By unanimous decision, you are granted provisional rank within the Astral Accord.

A symbol appeared in the air — gold surrounded by faint white rings.

Designation: Guardian Candidate.

Kael whispered loudly.

That sounds extremely important.

It is, Seraphine replied quietly.

The oldest council member leaned forward.

However… victory carries consequence.

The chamber darkened as a new projection appeared.

The fracture in the sky expanded slowly.

Energy readings rising exponentially.

The Herald's arrival was only a scouting action, he explained. A confirmation of your existence.

Another councilor continued.

Now that you have synchronized with a Guardian, higher entities will follow.

Arjun felt unease return.

How long do we have?

The answer came softly.

Not long.

The projection changed again.

A distant image appeared — a colossal shape moving behind the fracture, far larger than anything seen before.

Even the Council looked tense.

A Sovereign-class entity is awakening.

Silence filled the chamber.

Lyra whispered.

That level… exceeds Herald authority.

The councilor nodded.

If it crosses into our world fully, Guardian intervention alone may not be enough.

All eyes turned to Arjun.

Because now…

you are part of the defense system itself.

He took a slow breath.

Just days ago, he was an ordinary student.

Now the survival of worlds was becoming his responsibility.

Outside the tower, Astral City shined peacefully under the evening sky.

But far above, the fracture pulsed like a growing storm.

And deep beyond it…

something massive opened its eyes.
