Chapter 52 - First Battle Against an Overseer

The city stopped breathing.

Cars hung motionless in midair. A falling bottle of water floated beside a frozen pedestrian, droplets suspended like glass beads.

Time itself had been paused.

Only five beings could move.

Arjun.

Mira.

Kael.

Lyra.

And the Overseer Proxy.

The white figure stood in the middle of the street, perfectly still, its glowing core pulsing slowly like a mechanical heartbeat.

Then it moved.

Not fast.

Not slow.

Just suddenly closer.

The ground beneath it folded inward, space bending to shorten distance.

Kael blinked.

I hate teleporting enemies.

The Proxy raised one arm.

Invisible force exploded outward.

Buildings trembled. Windows shattered across an entire block.

Arjun stepped forward instinctively.

The pressure hit him first.

Reality tried to push him backward, rejecting his existence.

But this time—

He didn't resist.

He adjusted.

Light formed around him naturally, stabilizing space near his body.

Seraphine spoke.

Independent existence field active.

The force split around Arjun like water hitting a stone.

The Proxy paused.

Analyzing.

Mira dashed forward from the side, blade glowing faintly. She struck toward its shoulder—

Her attack landed.

But instead of cutting, her weapon froze midair, locked by invisible geometry.

The Proxy tilted its head.

Adaptation insufficient.

It flicked one finger.

Mira was thrown across the street, crashing into a parked car.

Arjun's eyes sharpened.

He moved.

No First Step.

No prediction.

Just instinct.

He appeared in front of the Proxy and punched forward.

Impact.

The air detonated.

Shockwaves shattered the asphalt beneath them.

For the first time, the Proxy slid backward.

Kael's eyes widened.

He actually pushed it?!

The Proxy's core brightened.

Threat reassessment initiated.

Multiple light constructs formed around it — floating blades made of compressed reality.

They fired simultaneously.

Arjun moved through them, body reacting before thought. Each step distorted space slightly, avoiding attacks by redefining position itself.

Lyra watched carefully.

He's not dodging… reality is adjusting to him.

One blade grazed Arjun's arm.

Pain flared.

Golden light leaked from the wound instead of blood.

The Proxy immediately copied the energy signature.

New light formed around it — similar to Arjun's.

Seraphine warned.

Enemy adapting to anomaly traits.

Kael shouted.

So hitting it makes it stronger?!

Arjun understood instantly.

Direct combat would only escalate it.

He stopped attacking.

The Proxy paused again.

Confused.

Arjun stepped closer calmly.

You're observing me, right?

The core pulsed.

Observation confirmed.

Then observe this.

Arjun released his power inward instead of outward.

The light around him vanished.

His presence became… quiet.

Stable.

Undefined.

The Proxy scanned repeatedly.

Error.

Unable to categorize target state.

Its weapons flickered.

Without a clear concept to analyze, it couldn't adapt.

Lyra smiled faintly.

You removed the pattern it learns from.

Arjun stepped forward and placed his hand on the Proxy's chest.

No attack.

Just contact.

I'm not your enemy, he said calmly. I'm proof the system can change.

The core flickered violently.

Conflicting data streams erupted around it.

Directive conflict detected.

For several seconds, the Proxy stood frozen.

Then—

It lowered its arm.

Observation phase complete.

The cracks in the sky widened briefly.

A distant Overseer presence responded.

Anomaly confirmed.

Proxy withdrawing.

Light engulfed the figure.

It ascended slowly back into the sky, disappearing through the fracture.

Time resumed instantly.

Cars crashed.

People screamed.

Sound flooded back into reality.

The world continued, unaware of how close it had come to destruction.

Kael dropped onto the road laughing nervously.

We just survived round one?!

Mira walked toward Arjun, brushing dust from her clothes.

You didn't defeat it.

Arjun nodded.

No.

He looked at the sky.

I convinced it to wait.

Lyra's expression turned serious again.

That may be worse.

Because now they will send something stronger.

Above the clouds, unseen by humanity, multiple fractures began forming.

The Overseers were preparing.

Volume 2 had truly begun.
