Chapter 19 - EYES FROM ABOVE

No one stopped them when they left Dusk Hollow.

That was the first sign things had changed.

Not trust.

Not safety.

But recognition.

Kael could feel it in the way the demons watched them go—not with hostility, but with something sharper. Measured interest. Calculation. The kind reserved for something not yet understood.

"Ashbound…"

The name lingered in the air behind him.

Not spoken loudly.

But repeated.

Remembered.

Vaelith walked beside him in silence for several minutes before finally speaking.

"You just rewrote the rules."

Kael didn't look at her.

"No."

His voice was calm.

"I just refused to follow the ones they expected."

Vaelith glanced at him, studying his expression.

"You spared a hunter in front of an entire enclave."

"Yes."

"You gave Dren a reason not to trust you."

Kael nodded.

"And a reason not to ignore me."

That earned a faint smirk.

"You're playing a dangerous game."

Kael exhaled slowly.

"That stopped being avoidable a long time ago."

Behind them, the presence of Dusk Hollow faded as they moved further into the tunnels. The cold blue glow dimmed, replaced once more by the darker, heavier tones of the Lower District.

The hunter walked between them.

Unsteady.

Silent.

Still trying to process what had just happened.

Kael didn't look at him.

Not yet.

They continued until the tunnels widened into a neutral stretch of passage—far enough from Dusk Hollow to avoid immediate surveillance, but not yet within Ashline territory.

Only then did Kael stop.

Vaelith stopped beside him.

The hunter nearly stumbled forward before catching himself.

"…why?" the hunter finally asked, his voice rough.

Kael turned.

For the first time since freeing him, he looked directly at the man.

Up close, the details were clearer.

Young.

Untrained eyes.

Fear barely hidden beneath forced composure.

"What's your name?" Kael asked.

The hunter hesitated.

Then—

"…Lio."

Kael nodded once.

"Lio."

The name settled.

Human.

Real.

Vaelith crossed her arms, watching quietly.

Kael stepped closer.

"You were part of a patrol."

Lio nodded slowly.

"Yes…"

"What happened?"

Lio swallowed.

"We were tracking movement… deeper than usual…"

His voice tightened.

"They were waiting."

Dusk Hollow.

Of course.

Kael didn't interrupt.

"They killed the others," Lio continued. "I tried to run…"

His hands clenched slightly.

"…I didn't get far."

Vaelith spoke quietly.

"They kept you alive for a reason."

Lio glanced at her, then back at Kael.

"…interrogation," he said.

Kael nodded.

"Probably."

Silence lingered for a moment.

Then Lio asked the real question.

"Why didn't you kill me?"

Vaelith's gaze shifted to Kael.

This mattered.

Kael didn't answer immediately.

Then—

"Because you're more useful alive."

The honesty hit harder than any lie.

Lio flinched slightly.

"…useful."

"Yes."

Kael's voice didn't soften.

"You're a connection."

"To the hunters."

Lio's eyes widened slightly.

"You're a demon."

"Yes."

"And you want to use me to get information."

"Yes."

Vaelith watched carefully.

Lio stared at Kael for a long moment.

"…you're not lying."

"No."

Silence.

Then—

"That's worse," Lio muttered.

Vaelith let out a quiet breath that might have been amusement.

Kael ignored it.

"You have two choices," Kael said.

Lio tensed.

Kael continued.

"You can try to run."

Vaelith shifted slightly at that.

"Or you can listen."

Lio's jaw tightened.

"…and if I run?"

Kael shrugged slightly.

"You won't get far."

Vaelith added calmly,

"And next time, no one stops them."

Lio went quiet.

Because he understood.

Kael stepped back slightly.

"Listen first."

Lio hesitated.

Then nodded.

Kael gestured toward the tunnel behind them.

"What you saw back there—that wasn't normal."

Lio let out a shaky breath.

"No."

"That's just one enclave."

Lio frowned.

"One?"

"There are more."

The realization hit slowly.

"…how many?"

"Enough."

Lio ran a hand through his hair.

"The Order doesn't know about this."

"No," Kael said.

"They don't."

Vaelith added,

"They know something is changing."

"But not what," Kael finished.

Lio looked between them.

"…why are you telling me this?"

Kael's answer was simple.

"Because you're going to report it."

Lio blinked.

"…what?"

Kael met his gaze.

"You're going back to Ironhold."

Vaelith didn't react.

She understood now.

Lio shook his head.

"They'll think I'm lying."

"Not if you tell it correctly," Kael said.

"And what's 'correctly'?" Lio asked.

Kael's eyes sharpened slightly.

"You tell them demon activity is increasing."

"That enclaves are moving."

"That something is organizing them."

Lio stared at him.

"…you want the hunters to know?"

"Yes."

Vaelith finally spoke.

"That brings more patrols."

Kael nodded.

"Yes."

Lio looked confused.

"…why would you want that?"

Kael answered calmly.

"Because pressure creates reaction."

"And reaction creates opportunity."

Lio frowned.

"I don't understand."

"You don't need to," Kael said.

"You just need to deliver the message."

Silence settled again.

Lio looked at the two of them.

A demon.

And another demon.

Talking like strategists.

Like something else entirely.

"…who are you?" he asked quietly.

Kael didn't answer.

Instead, he stepped back.

"You leave now."

Lio blinked.

"…just like that?"

"Yes."

Vaelith added,

"If you stay, you die."

That was enough.

Lio hesitated only a moment longer before turning and moving quickly down the tunnel.

He didn't look back.

Kael watched him go until his presence faded completely.

Then—

Vaelith spoke.

"You're escalating."

Kael nodded.

"Yes."

"That will bring Malrec."

"Yes."

Vaelith's eyes narrowed slightly.

"You want that."

Kael turned back toward Ashline territory.

"Yes."

Because the game was no longer just underground.

Now—

It was moving to both sides.

Far above them, inside Ironhold Cathedral, Lio stumbled through the main gates.

Guards moved immediately.

"Hunter!"

"State your unit!"

Lio barely slowed.

"Patrol seven—Lower District—urgent report—"

They let him pass.

Moments later, he stood before Inquisitor Malrec.

The man's pale eyes studied him silently.

"You look like you've seen something important," Malrec said.

Lio swallowed.

"I… I have."

Malrec stepped closer.

"Then speak."

Lio hesitated—

Just for a moment.

Then remembered Kael's words.

"Demon activity is increasing," Lio said.

Malrec didn't react.

"Continue."

"They're not acting randomly," Lio added.

"They're… organizing."

That got his attention.

Malrec's eyes sharpened.

"Organizing?"

"Yes."

Lio's voice steadied slightly.

"There are multiple enclaves."

"Connected."

Silence.

Then—

Malrec smiled faintly.

"Interesting."

Very interesting.

Far below the city—

Kael walked back toward Ashline.

And for the first time—

The war had begun to move on both sides at once.
