Chapter 14 - Chapter Fourteen- The Gala Trap

The gala hall glittered like a palace built on lies.

Crystal chandeliers cast soft golden light across marble floors, champagne flowed freely, and laughter echoed from people who believed they were safe. Elena stepped inside on Alessandro's arm, her red dress drawing attention exactly as planned.

Every eye turned.

She felt it—the weight of visibility, the danger of being seen.

Alessandro leaned closer, his voice low, calm, lethal. "Stay within my reach at all times."

"I will," she replied softly.

His hand tightened around hers. Possessive. Grounding.

The music swelled, violins masking whispers and intent. Elena scanned the room the way she had been trained to—faces, exits, spacing, security patterns. Too many blind spots. Too many smiles that didn't reach the eyes.

This wasn't a celebration.

It was a hunting ground.

Eyes in the Crowd

She felt it before she saw it.

A stare—cold, deliberate, lingering too long.

Elena subtly shifted, angling herself toward a mirrored pillar. In the reflection, she saw him. Tall. Composed. A stranger in an expensive suit, standing far too still for someone meant to be enjoying the evening.

He lifted his glass slightly.

A toast.

Her pulse spiked.

Alessandro noticed instantly. "Who?"

She didn't answer aloud. Instead, she brushed her thumb once against his wrist—two short taps. Left side. Threat.

His jaw tightened almost imperceptibly.

They continued walking, pretending ease while every instinct screamed.

The First Move

Halfway through the evening, a server approached with champagne. Elena's eyes dropped to the tray—and she saw it.

The hesitation.

Too careful.

She didn't take the glass.

Alessandro didn't either.

The server's hand trembled.

That was all Alessandro needed.

He caught the man's wrist mid-motion, twisting just enough to make the message clear. The tray crashed to the floor, glasses shattering, champagne spilling like blood across white marble.

Gasps rippled through the crowd.

Security moved instantly.

Alessandro leaned close to the man's ear. "Walk away. Now."

The server did. Pale. Shaking. Alive—because Alessandro chose restraint.

Elena exhaled slowly.

First test survived.

Separation

They knew it would happen eventually.

A distraction. A manufactured emergency.

The lights flickered once—just enough to cause confusion. Music faltered. Voices rose.

Alessandro's phone vibrated. He glanced at it and cursed under his breath.

"Stay here," he said. "Don't move."

"I can help—"

"No." His voice cut through her. "This is not a debate."

He stepped away, barking orders into his phone. Guards repositioned. The crowd shifted.

And for the first time that night—

Elena stood alone.

The Invitation

"Brave of you," a voice said behind her.

She didn't turn immediately. She steadied her breathing first.

Then she faced him.

The man from the reflection.

Up close, his smile was wrong. Too calm. Too confident.

"You must be disappointed," he continued. "All that protection… and here you are."

"I'm never unprotected," she replied evenly.

He chuckled. "Everyone bleeds the same."

Her spine stiffened.

"Walk away," she said.

Instead, he leaned closer. "Your husband built an empire on fear. Did you really think it wouldn't come for you?"

She smiled faintly.

"You misunderstand," she said. "I didn't come here to be afraid."

His eyes narrowed.

The Grab

It happened fast.

A hand closed around her wrist. Tight. Possessive. Wrong.

The room seemed to hold its breath.

The man leaned in. "Let's take a walk."

Elena didn't scream.

She acted.

She twisted her arm the way Alessandro had taught her, drove her heel back, hard. The man hissed in pain but didn't release her.

Bad choice.

Because Alessandro saw.

Touch Her and Die

The air shifted violently.

Alessandro crossed the room like a force of nature, shoving people aside without breaking stride.

He didn't shout.

He didn't warn.

He simply reached them and ended it.

His fist connected with the man's jaw—bone cracking, teeth snapping. He grabbed the attacker by the collar and slammed him into a marble column with enough force to fracture stone.

The room erupted into screams.

Alessandro leaned close to the man's bloodied face.

"You touched her," he said quietly.

Then he broke the man's arm.

Security swarmed. The attacker collapsed, sobbing, unconscious before he hit the floor.

Alessandro turned to Elena immediately.

His hands framed her face. His eyes searched every inch of her.

"Are you hurt?"

She shook her head, breath shaky but steady. "No."

His relief lasted half a second—before it hardened into something lethal.

The Warning

The gala was over.

Police questions were deflected. Guests ushered out. The narrative rewritten before midnight.

In a private corridor, Alessandro pulled Elena close, forehead resting against hers.

"This ends now," he said.

"No," she replied softly. "It's just beginning."

His gaze sharpened.

"They wanted a reaction," she continued. "And they got one. Now they think they know your weakness."

"They do," he said.

She met his eyes. "Then let them think they've won."

Silence stretched between them.

Then—slowly—he smiled.

A terrifying, beautiful thing.

"Careful," he murmured. "You're starting to sound like me."

The Final Threat

As they exited through the private underground garage, Alessandro's phone buzzed again.

This time, he didn't answer it.

He showed her the screen instead.

A single message.

Next time, we won't miss.

Below it—an image.

A photo of Elena from inside the gala.

Taken from behind.

Close.

Too close.

Alessandro's hand tightened around the phone until the screen cracked.

He looked at her, eyes burning.

"They think this is a game," he said.

Elena straightened. "Then it's time we changed the rules."

The car door closed behind them with a final, ominous sound.

And somewhere in the city, their enemies were already planning the next move—unaware that they had just crossed a line that could never be uncrossed.

Because touching her once had been a mistake.

Trying again would be fatal.
