Chapter 40 - Chapter FortyThe Devil’s Pier

Rain still hung in the air when the black convoy left the De Luca estate.

Three armored SUVs moved through the dark streets of the city, headlights cutting through the mist.

Inside the lead vehicle, silence filled the space.

Elena sat beside Alessandro, watching the city lights blur past the window.

Neither of them had spoken for several minutes.

Adrian drove.

Valentina sat in the back with a tablet in her hands, her fingers moving quickly across the screen.

Finally Elena broke the silence.

"You're sure about this?"

Alessandro didn't look away from the road ahead.

"No."

Adrian snorted softly.

"Confidence is inspiring."

Elena turned to Alessandro again.

"This is your brother."

"Yes."

"You haven't seen him in ten years."

"Yes."

"And you're walking into a trap he helped design."

"Yes."

Elena sighed.

"You're impossible."

Alessandro glanced at her briefly.

"You married me."

Despite everything, Elena almost smiled.

The Plan

Valentina finally spoke from the back seat.

"Pier 17 is heavily guarded."

Adrian frowned.

"How heavily?"

"Thirty men minimum."

"Only thirty?" Adrian said sarcastically.

"That's just outside," Valentina replied calmly.

"Inside the warehouse is another story."

Elena turned toward her.

"How many inside?"

Valentina tapped the screen.

"Unknown."

"That's comforting."

"But we do know something important."

Everyone looked back at her.

"The trap isn't meant for all of us."

Adrian raised an eyebrow.

"What do you mean?"

Valentina looked directly at Alessandro.

"It's meant for you."

Alessandro nodded.

"I know."

Elena frowned.

"Then why bring us?"

Valentina's lips curved slightly.

"Because they won't expect us."

The Pier

Ten minutes later, the convoy stopped several blocks away from Pier 17.

The group exited the vehicles quietly.

The docks stretched out before them.

Massive cargo containers towered over the pier like steel walls.

Floodlights illuminated the warehouse at the center of the dock.

Armed guards patrolled the perimeter.

Adrian looked through his binoculars.

"Forty men."

Valentina corrected him.

"Forty-two."

Adrian lowered the binoculars.

"You counted that fast?"

"Yes."

Elena studied the warehouse.

"You really think Luca is inside?"

Alessandro's voice was quiet.

"Yes."

Adrian checked his weapon.

"Well… family reunions are always awkward."

The Trap Begins

They moved carefully through the rows of cargo containers, staying in the shadows.

The sound of waves crashing against the dock echoed softly in the distance.

Elena's heart pounded harder with every step.

Finally they reached the side of the warehouse.

Valentina connected a small device to the security panel.

The door lock clicked open.

Adrian blinked.

"That easy?"

Valentina shrugged.

"They're using outdated encryption."

Alessandro pushed the door open slowly.

Darkness filled the warehouse.

Rows of containers stacked high above them.

And in the center—

A single chair.

With someone tied to it.

Elena stepped forward carefully.

It was Luca.

Brother Against Brother

The warehouse lights suddenly switched on.

Dozens of armed men stepped out from behind the containers.

Weapons raised.

Orlov walked out from the shadows.

Smiling.

"Welcome."

Adrian sighed.

"Well… that went exactly as expected."

Luca lifted his head slowly.

His eyes locked with Alessandro's.

For a moment neither brother spoke.

Ten years of silence stood between them.

Then Luca smiled faintly.

"Hello, brother."

Alessandro's voice was ice.

"You're alive."

"Yes."

"You betrayed me."

Luca shrugged slightly.

"You buried me."

The Truth Between Brothers

Elena frowned.

"What is he talking about?"

Luca's gaze shifted toward her briefly.

"You must be the famous wife."

Elena crossed her arms.

"And you must be the brother who faked his death."

Luca chuckled.

"I like her."

Alessandro stepped forward.

"Why?"

Luca tilted his head.

"Why what?"

"Why work with Orlov?"

Luca looked almost amused.

"Because you became weak."

The words cut through the room.

"You followed father's vision," Luca continued.

"Peace. Order. Negotiation."

He shook his head.

"That's not how empires survive."

Alessandro's eyes darkened.

"So you started a war."

"Yes."

"And killed the council."

"Yes."

Luca leaned forward slightly in the chair.

"And now the empire can finally be rebuilt."

Elena whispered,

"With Orlov?"

Luca's smile widened.

"Oh no."

Everyone looked at him.

"Orlov thinks he's my partner."

He laughed quietly.

"But he's just another piece on the board."

Orlov's expression hardened slightly.

"That's enough."

The Gunfire

Orlov raised his hand.

"Kill them."

The warehouse exploded into action.

Gunfire erupted instantly.

Adrian dove behind a container, firing back.

Valentina disappeared into the shadows.

Elena grabbed a pistol from her jacket.

Alessandro moved like a storm.

Two guards fell before they even realized he had fired.

Orlov stepped back toward the exit.

"You're too late, De Luca."

Alessandro's voice cut through the gunfire.

"Am I?"

In one swift motion, he shot the rope binding Luca's hands.

The ropes fell away instantly.

Luca stood up slowly.

Stretching his wrists.

Elena's eyes widened.

"You weren't actually tied."

Luca smiled.

"Of course not."

Then he turned toward Orlov.

And pulled a gun from beneath the chair.

Orlov's eyes narrowed.

"So this is how it ends."

Luca's smile grew darker.

"No."

He pointed the gun at Alessandro instead.

"This is."

The Ultimate Betrayal

Everything froze.

Adrian shouted,

"What the hell?!"

Elena stared in shock.

Luca's gun remained aimed directly at his brother's chest.

His voice was calm.

"I didn't fake my death just to help you."

Alessandro didn't move.

"I know."

Elena whispered,

"You knew?"

Alessandro nodded slightly.

"Yes."

Luca laughed softly.

"Good."

Then he said the words that changed everything.

"Because tonight…"

"…I'm taking your empire."
