Chapter 42 - Chapter Forty-TwoThe Brother Who Fell

The sound of the gunshots echoed through the warehouse.

For a split second—

Everything stopped.

Then a body hit the ground.

Elena's scream tore through the chaos.

"Alessandro!"

She ran forward instinctively, her heart pounding so violently it felt like it might burst.

But when she reached the fallen man—

It wasn't Alessandro.

It was Luca.

The Bullet

Luca lay on the concrete floor, clutching his side as blood spread across his shirt.

His gun had fallen from his hand.

Alessandro still stood where he had been, his weapon lowered slowly.

Smoke curled from the barrel.

Around them, the battle inside the warehouse continued.

Gunfire erupted between Luca's hidden army and the De Luca soldiers pouring through the entrance.

But for the two brothers—

The war had narrowed to one moment.

Luca looked up at Alessandro.

And laughed.

Even while bleeding.

"You always were faster."

Alessandro stepped closer, his voice calm but heavy.

"You hesitated."

"Yes."

Luca coughed slightly.

"That's what brothers do."

Elena's Shock

Elena knelt beside Luca instinctively.

Despite everything that had just happened.

Despite the betrayal.

Despite the war.

Seeing Alessandro's brother bleeding out on the floor still felt wrong.

"You need a medic," she said quickly.

Luca looked at her and smirked faintly.

"You care too much."

"Someone has to."

Adrian appeared beside them, still firing occasionally toward the upper walkways.

"Well this family reunion went great."

He glanced down at Luca.

"You shot him clean."

Alessandro's expression remained unreadable.

"He'll live."

Luca chuckled weakly.

"You sure about that?"

The Truth

Alessandro crouched down beside his brother.

For a moment neither spoke.

Then Luca asked quietly,

"Did you know?"

"Yes."

"Since when?"

"Since you aimed the gun."

Luca frowned slightly.

"That late?"

Alessandro shook his head.

"Since you smiled."

Luca laughed again despite the pain.

"Of course."

Elena looked between them.

"What are you talking about?"

Alessandro answered calmly.

"He never intended to kill me."

Adrian blinked.

"…wait what?"

Luca sighed.

"Brother… did you have to ruin the dramatic moment?"

The Hidden Game

Elena stared at Luca in confusion.

"You tried to take his empire."

"Yes."

"You threatened to kill him."

"Yes."

"You built an army against him."

"Yes."

"Then why didn't you shoot?"

Luca's smile faded slightly.

He looked toward the far side of the warehouse where Orlov had vanished earlier.

"Because the real enemy isn't him."

Elena's breath caught.

"You were working together?"

Alessandro shook his head.

"No."

Luca finished the sentence.

"…we were both working toward the same goal."

Adrian sighed.

"Why does every mafia family have complicated emotional strategies?"

The Real Target

Luca struggled to sit up slightly.

"Elena…"

She leaned closer.

"Yes?"

"You remember what our father believed."

"Peace," she said quietly.

Luca nodded.

"Yes."

"But peace requires destroying the people who profit from war."

Elena slowly turned toward Alessandro.

"You both planned this."

Alessandro didn't deny it.

"We planned to expose Orlov."

Adrian blinked.

"Expose him to who?"

Valentina's voice suddenly crackled through the radio.

"To the entire world."

Phase Three

The large warehouse monitors suddenly flickered to life.

Every screen showed live news broadcasts.

But something had changed.

Footage from the council tower explosion.

Recordings of mafia operations.

Financial transfers.

Arms deals.

Everything.

Broadcasting publicly.

Across every network.

Adrian stared.

"Oh my God."

Valentina's voice continued.

"Every crime committed by Orlov and the council families is now public."

Elena's eyes widened.

"You leaked everything."

"Yes."

Police sirens echoed faintly from the distant city streets.

Valentina added calmly,

"And the authorities are already moving."

Orlov's Rage

Outside the warehouse, Viktor Orlov watched the city skyline from inside a speeding car.

His phone buzzed violently.

One alert after another.

News broadcasts.

Police mobilization.

Financial seizures.

His entire empire was collapsing in real time.

Orlov's calm expression finally cracked.

"Valentina…"

He crushed the phone in his hand.

"You clever little snake."

Brothers at War

Back inside the warehouse, Luca leaned back against a container wall.

Blood still stained his shirt, but his smile had returned.

"You always did like dramatic endings."

Alessandro stood over him.

"This isn't the end."

Luca's eyes gleamed.

"No."

"You're right."

Elena frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Luca looked toward the open warehouse door.

Where distant police sirens were growing louder.

Then he said quietly—

"Because Orlov just became the most dangerous man alive."

Adrian groaned.

"I knew it wasn't over."

The New Enemy

Elena looked between the two brothers.

"You planned all of this…"

"Yes," Alessandro said.

"To destroy the council."

"Yes."

"And expose Orlov."

"Yes."

"But he escaped."

Alessandro nodded slowly.

"Yes."

Elena felt the weight of the truth settle in her chest.

"So now he has nothing left to lose."

"No," Alessandro corrected.

"Now he has one thing left."

"What?"

Alessandro looked down at her.

"Revenge."

The Final Warning

At that exact moment, Adrian's phone rang.

He answered quickly.

His face went pale.

"What?"

Elena stepped closer.

"What is it?"

Adrian looked up slowly.

"You're not going to like this."

"Tell us."

Adrian swallowed.

"Orlov just released a video."

Valentina's voice returned through the radio.

"I'm pulling it up now."

The warehouse monitors flickered again.

The video appeared.

And Elena's blood ran cold.

Because Orlov wasn't alone in the recording.

Standing beside him—

With a gun pointed at Elena's mother—

Was someone she trusted.

Someone who had been inside the De Luca estate.

Someone who had betrayed them all.
