Chapter 16 - Chapter 16

Aria didn't feel the floor beneath her feet as she walked.

The Chamber of Dominion faded behind her, its pulsing runes and trembling crystals dissolving into the dim corridors of the Citadel. Her breath came in uneven bursts, her chest tight, her mind still echoing with the fragment's scream when she forced it into silence.

You dare command me…

Aria pressed a hand to her ribs. "I did."

You will regret it.

"Maybe."

Silence.

But not absence.

Never absence.

The Demon King walked beside her, silent as ever, his cloak whispering across the stone floor. The shadows bent subtly toward him, as though acknowledging their master. His presence was cold, steady, grounding.

Aria hated how much she needed that right now.

When they reached the upper levels of the Citadel, he finally spoke.

"You commanded her."

Aria let out a shaky breath. "I forced her."

"You commanded her."

"She hated it."

"She obeyed."

Aria shook her head. "That doesn't mean anything."

"It means everything."

Aria stopped walking, leaning against the wall. Her legs trembled, her breath uneven. The fragment pulsed faintly beneath her ribs—weak, but simmering with fury.

"She's angry," Aria whispered.

"Yes."

"She wants out."

"Yes."

"She wants me."

He turned to her. "She cannot have you."

Aria swallowed hard. "You sound very sure."

"I am."

"How?"

"Because you are stronger than her."

Aria looked away. "You keep saying that."

"Because it remains true."

She pushed herself off the wall. "What now?"

"Now," he said, "you learn to bend her."

Aria blinked. "Bend her?"

"Yes."

"That sounds… wrong."

"It is necessary."

Aria groaned. "You're terrible at reassurance."

"I am not offering reassurance."

"Clearly."

He gestured for her to follow.

They walked deeper into the Citadel, ascending into levels she hadn't seen before. The air grew warmer, the runes brighter, the shadows thinner. The walls here were smoother, carved with symbols that glowed softly like starlight.

Aria frowned. "Where are we going?"

"To the Aetherium."

"That sounds… fancy."

"It is dangerous."

"Of course it is."

He didn't react.

He simply continued walking.

When they reached the Aetherium, Aria stopped.

The doors were tall, carved from pale stone, etched with runes that glowed like moonlight. The air around them shimmered with drifting motes of silver energy.

Aria stepped back. "This feels… different."

"It is."

"How?"

"It is alive."

Aria blinked. "Alive?"

"Yes."

"That's not comforting."

"It is not meant to be."

He placed a hand on the door.

The runes flared.

The doors opened.

Warm air rushed out, carrying the scent of old magic and something softer—something that made Aria's skin prickle.

She hesitated. "What's inside?"

"Your potential."

Aria frowned. "That's vague."

"It is also accurate."

Aria stepped inside.

The Aetherium was vast—larger than any chamber she had seen. The ceiling arched high above, disappearing into swirling silver mist. The floor was smooth stone, etched with runes that pulsed faintly like a heartbeat.

In the center of the room floated a sphere of shimmering light, suspended in midair, pulsing softly.

Aria approached slowly. "What is that?"

"Your power."

Aria blinked. "My what?"

"Your power."

"That's vague."

"It is also accurate."

Aria stared at the sphere. "What does it do?"

"It reveals what you are capable of."

Aria swallowed hard. "And what am I capable of?"

He stepped closer, his voice low. "More than you believe."

Aria pressed a hand to her chest. "She's listening."

"Yes."

"She's waiting."

"Yes."

"She's watching."

"Yes."

Aria swallowed hard. "I don't want her to see this."

"She already does."

Aria groaned. "You're impossible."

"So I have been told."

He gestured to the sphere. "Touch it."

Aria hesitated. "What happens if I do?"

"You will see."

"That's not an answer."

"It is the only one that matters."

Aria glared at him. "You're infuriating."

"So I have been told."

She took a deep breath and reached out.

Her fingers brushed the sphere.

Light exploded.

Aria cried out as warmth surged through her body, spreading through her chest, her arms, her legs. She felt weightless, suspended between worlds. The Aetherium dissolved into swirling silver mist.

And then—

She was standing in a vast expanse of light.

Not blinding light.

Soft light.

Warm light.

The air shimmered with drifting motes of energy, each one pulsing faintly like a heartbeat.

Aria turned slowly, her breath trembling. "Where am I?"

A voice answered behind her.

Inside yourself.

Aria spun around.

The woman of shadow stood at the edge of the light, her eyes glowing silver. Her presence was cold, ancient, overwhelming.

Aria's breath caught. "You again."

Always.

"You're the fragment."

I am what remains.

Aria swallowed hard. "Why are you here?"

Because you touched your power.

Aria frowned. "What does that mean?"

You awakened it.

Aria shook her head. "No. I didn't."

You did.

Aria pressed a hand to her chest. "You're lying."

I cannot lie.

Aria stepped back. "I don't want this."

You do.

"No."

You do not know yourself.

Aria clenched her fists. "Stop."

You fear me.

"Of course I do."

Good.

Aria blinked. "Why is that good?"

Because fear is awareness. Awareness is control.

Aria shook her head. "You keep saying that."

Because it remains true.

Aria groaned. "You sound like him."

The woman tilted her head. Him?

"The Demon King."

Ah.

Aria frowned. "What does that mean?"

He fears me.

Aria stiffened. "He fears what you'll do."

He fears what you will become.

Aria shook her head. "No."

Yes.

Aria pressed a hand to her forehead. "Stop."

You cannot silence me.

Aria stepped forward. "Why did you choose me?"

The woman's expression softened—barely, but enough to see the echo of something human.

Because you were strong enough to hold me.

Aria swallowed. "And if I wasn't?"

You would have died.

Aria's stomach twisted. "So I'm just… convenient?"

No.

The woman stepped closer.

You are necessary.

Aria's breath caught. "For what?"

For my return.

Aria shook her head. "I won't let you awaken."

The woman smiled.

You already are.

Aria stumbled back. "No—"

The light rippled.

The woman's eyes glowed brighter.

You cannot hold me forever.

Aria clenched her fists. "Watch me."

The woman paused.

Then she laughed.

Softly.

Almost fondly.

You are stronger than you believe.

Aria froze.

The Demon King said that.

Often.

Too often.

Aria swallowed hard. "What do you want from me?"

To awaken.

"No."

Yes.

"I won't let you."

You cannot stop what has already begun.

Aria stepped forward. "Then I'll fight you."

The woman's smile widened.

Good.

The light shattered.

Aria collapsed to her knees, gasping. The Aetherium returned. The sphere dimmed. The runes faded.

The Demon King stood over her, silent.

Aria trembled. "She saw everything."

"Yes."

"She knows my power."

"Yes."

"She wants it."

"Yes."

Aria looked up at him, her voice barely a whisper.

"What happens now?"

He held her gaze.

"Now," he said quietly, "you learn to become stronger than her."
