Chapter 35 - Chapter 35: Too Near

Things got a bit weird after that, making it hard to act like everything was normal. It wasn't because anyone had seen what happened, mind you. Nobody had. Lin Lan was swamped with paperwork, and Zhou Xiao was still getting jerked around between drills and meetings. Colonel Luo Wei had a call that dragged on for most of the afternoon. So, yeah, nobody knew Ye Fan had actually sat inside Mu Chen's partition and held his hand. And nobody knew that the trembling had stopped because of it. But Mu Chen knew. And Ye Fan knew. That was enough to make the air between them feel… different.

By evening, the unit floor had gone quiet again. No alarms, no movement orders. Just that strange, tense calm that always seemed to settle right before something else went wrong. Mu Chen was sitting at a table, a pile of standard support forms Lin Lan had dumped in front of him. Basic stuff, really. Supply checklists, recovery notes. Anything to keep him visible, but in a completely harmless way. He was about halfway through a page when a shadow fell over the table. It was Ye Fan. Mu Chen looked up.

Ye Fan placed a small packet next to Mu Chen's hand. Mu Chen blinked. "What's this?" "Sugar," Ye Fan replied. Mu Chen stared at the packet. It was the little packets you get with coffee or tea. "I know what it is," Mu Chen said softly. Ye Fan's jaw tightened, like he was already regretting the gesture. "You didn't eat enough." Mu Chen's chest felt tight, in that warm, dangerous kind of way. "You noticed?" he asked. Ye Fan looked at him like the question was ridiculous. "Yes." Mu Chen almost managed a smile. Almost. Ye Fan lingered there for a beat too long.

Then Zhou Xiao walked in and immediately slowed down when he saw them. His eyes flicked to the sugar packet. Then to Ye Fan's face. Then back to Mu Chen. Ye Fan's expression went completely blank. "Captain Zhou," he said, his voice icy, "if you have something to say, say it." Zhou Xiao held up his hands. "Nothing. Just here for some water." But he wasn't exactly subtle. He kept stealing glances while he filled his cup. Mu Chen looked down at the form, pretending to read, even though he could feel the heat creeping up his neck. Ye Fan didn't move. That was worse.

Zhou Xiao gave up on his pretense and said, "You've been watching him all day." Silence. Mu Chen froze. Ye Fan's eyes snapped to Zhou Xiao with enough force to cut metal. "Do you want extra drills, Major?" Zhou Xiao took a big gulp of his water, like it was suddenly the most important thing in the world. "No, Major." Ye Fan turned and walked away. Mu Chen stared at the sugar packet beside his hand. Such a silly thing. Such a small thing. And somehow, it felt more intimate than some people's entire confessions.

Later, when Mu Chen finally stood up to put the forms away, he felt Ye Fan's gaze on him again, from across the room. That pull was still there. Constant. Low. Hard to ignore. Ye Fan was standing by the mission board, not really looking at anything. Mu Chen walked over before he could talk himself out of it. He stopped beside him. "Thank you," Mu Chen said quietly. Ye Fan didn't look away from the dark screen. "For what?" Mu Chen held up the sugar packet between two fingers. Ye Fan's jaw flexed. "You looked pale." Mu Chen's voice came out softer than he intended. "You notice too much."

Now Ye Fan looked at him. His eyes dropped to Mu Chen's hand holding the packet. Then to Mu Chen's mouth. Then back to his eyes. "That's your fault," Ye Fan said. Mu Chen blinked. "How?" Ye Fan's voice lowered. "You make me pay attention." The words hit hard. Too direct. Too honest. Too close. Mu Chen's heart skipped a beat. He felt it. And judging by the way Ye Fan's gaze sharpened, Ye Fan felt it too. For one dangerous second, neither of them moved.

Then footsteps sounded in the hall. Lin Lan. She stopped when she saw them standing a little too close by the board. Not touching. Not enough to cause trouble, but close enough to feel. Lin Lan's eyes flicked from Ye Fan to Mu Chen and back. Then she said, in her usual calm, flat voice, "I have tomorrow's training schedule." Ye Fan stepped back first. Of course he did. He took the paper from her and glanced at it. Lin Lan added, "There's also a note from command." Ye Fan looked up. "What note?" Lin Lan's mouth tightened. "Joint field simulation. Guide-sentinel response observation."

Mu Chen's stomach plummeted. Ye Fan's face went cold. "With who?" Lin Lan's gaze flicked to Mu Chen for a second. "Not assigned yet." A lie. All three of them knew it. Ye Fan folded the paper, a little too neatly, a little too carefully. Lin Lan continued, "It might still be changed. Colonel Luo is arguing." Ye Fan said nothing. Lin Lan looked at Mu Chen then, and there was something almost like a warning in her eyes. "Don't be alone tonight," she said. Then she left.

Silence fell again. Mu Chen stood beside Ye Fan under the cold lights, the sugar packet still in his hand. Ye Fan's voice came out low and dangerous. "They're pushing faster." Mu Chen nodded. "Yes." Ye Fan looked at him. And this time, he didn't try to hide what was in his eyes. Protectiveness. Anger. Something possessive enough to scare both of them. Mu Chen's breath hitched. Because that look should have made him step back. Instead, it made him want to step closer. Ye Fan spoke softly, almost like a warning to himself. "Stay away from me when other people are looking."

Mu Chen looked at him and said the worst possible thing. "What about when they're not?" Ye Fan went still. The air in the room changed. Not a sound. Not a movement. Just the undeniable knowledge that Mu Chen had finally pushed back in a way neither of them could pretend not to understand. Ye Fan's eyes darkened. He took one slow step forward. Now they were too close again. Not touching. Almost touching. Every breath was noticeable. "When they're not looking," Ye Fan said, his voice rough and low, "you make it very hard to think." Mu Chen's fingers tightened around the sugar packet until the paper bent. He should have moved. He didn't.

Ye Fan's gaze dropped to Mu Chen's mouth again. Longer this time. Mu Chen felt heat climb up the back of his neck. The room felt too small. The lights too bright. The distance between them too thin. Then Zhou Xiao shouted from the hallway, "If you two are done staring at each other, Luo Wei wants us!" The moment shattered. Ye Fan stepped back so fast it almost looked angry. Mu Chen looked away at once, trying to steady his breathing. Ye Fan's voice returned to its usual command-flat tone. "Move." Mu Chen nodded and followed.

But through the briefing that followed, and through dinner, and through the long quiet night on the unit floor, one thing stayed with him. Ye Fan had not denied it. When no one was looking, they were too near.
