"That connects to your room," Mara said, her voice barely breaking the heavy silence between them.
"Yes."
She stared at the open doorway behind him, then back at his face. "I knocked on it once."
"I know." His jaw tightened. "I heard you."
"And you didn't answer."
"No."
"Why not?"
Nico's eyes stayed on hers without flinching. "It wasn't the right time."
Mara gripped the sheets tightly until her knuckles turned white. The anger from their roadside confrontation was still sitting in her chest, right where he had left it.
He hadn't apologised then… he wasn't apologising at the moment. Or was that his reason for coming?
Nico crossed the room slowly, stopping at the edge of the bed. He was close enough that she had to tilt her head back to look up at him; close enough that she could smell the faint trace of his cologne mixed with something else… whisky.
He's probably been drinking since he left her on the side of the road.
