Mara let out a long, shuddering breath before responding in a whisper. "Because I'm terrified."
Nico turned to fully face her. The shadows of the dense tree line played across his features, but his eyes were entirely focused on her. "Of Bruno's men?"
"No." Mara looked up at him. "Of this. Of us. I'm terrified of what happens to everything we built today if this goes wrong tomorrow."
She let the truth hang between them in the freezing night air, her mind drifting back to the morning in the market, the peace they'd found on the sailboat, and the quiet promises they had exchanged over a worn wooden table at Franco's.
