I was just trying to sleep peacefully when an awful sound attacked my ears. I rolled around and put my pillow over my head but it did little to save my ears.
Finally, after beeping for a few minutes the sound went away, and just when I thought I could rest peacefully that godforsaken sound came back. After two or three times of this I was pissed off and threw my pillow in the sound's general location, but the sound wouldn't stop, so I did what I learned after been in so many dysfunctional foster homes. I tunned out the noise and went back to sleep.
I was actually getting back asleep when someone burst my door open and I was instantly awake.
I saw Jack come in while the damn sound was still playing, go to my desk and finally, make the sound stop.
" Thanks. I thought I was going to go insane"
" Don't thank me so soon. I'm actually here to wake you up"
I politely ignored him and closed back my eyes.
" Well, if you don't care about pancakes with hot chocolate on them it's your lose"
" Are there really pancakes?"
" Of course. I would never lie"
" Ok, go out. I'll be ready in 5 minutes"
Jack turned around and left. I quickly put on my clothes and retrieved my phone from the desk and then I remembered.' That awfully noise were the alarms' . At least I wasn't going to be late thanks to Jack, but I had to fix that. I couldn't keep relying on him forever, as a matter of fact I shouldn't even trust him, but I did, something about him made me trust him, even though I wasn't sure of what it was.
Dismissing my thoughts as tiredness I went out and found Jack leaning against Mark's door.
" Won't he be annoyed if he sees you like that? You said they have awful tempers"
" Yeah, they do, but worry not, they have already gone out. As a matter of fact if we don't go now there'll be no food left"
No, that couldn't be. Pancakes were my favourite food and nobody was going to take them away from me, much less some stupid students.
" Lead the way" I told Jack, and he chuckled while doing just that.
After walking for a while we finally reached the cafeteria, where only a few students were seated on some tables.
" See, since you're a tardy there's no food left" Jack mocked me.
" You also don't have any food"
" That's not true. I woke up earlier, went to have breakfast and then went to find you"
" Still, I'm sure there'll be plenty of food left"
There wasn't plenty of food left. All that was left were eggs, bacon, juice and strangely enough, couliflower. Who in their sane mind ate cauliflower as breakfast?. Jack must've seen my thoughts written on my face because he spoke without me having to ask.
" That freak Mark does, or at least some days, when he is feeling good. He says it's good for him, other days he'll swear he'll never eat it"
'Weird' I thought, but I had more pressing problems and didn't really care about Mark.
" Were there really pancakes?" I asked Jack, but the bastard just laughed, as he put some bacon, eggs and a juice on my tray.
" Lier" I muttered, but he only laughed harder.
After taking down a few bites of my food, which was horrible, I started feeling like I was losing all my strength. The only reason why I got up in the first place was to eat pancakes, but now the pancakes were gone and so was my energy.
" Are there ever pancakes here?" I asked Jack hopefully, but the jackass just picked a little bit of my bacon, put it in his mouth and said."Nope". And at that moment I felt like maybe his murder would be justified.
Jack
It was very amusing to watch the hope in her eyes turn into hatred at a mere word. As I had previously guessed, this new guy was gonna be fun, unlike the other two dudes I had to live with.
Realizing I still didn't know the name of my new source of amusement I asked.
" What's your name, by the way, in case you're not the brightest bulb in the shed my name's Jack"
He locked at me, confused, and I waited for his response.
" Arun"
" Well, Arun I think we should run if we want to make it to class on time"
I got up and so did Arun. Looking at my watch I panicked seeing the numbers 7:55. The class was far away and Miss Ria, the teacher, punished severely those who were late. I had already been punished by her twice and I could say it wasn't a pleasant experience.
"Run" I shouted while turning corridors like a man possessed. Once I could see the classroom I looked back and saw Arun still following me and then I got an idea. I already knew what his initiation rite would be. I smiled wickedly while waiting at the door for Arun, but luckily he was none the wiser.

I ran behind Jack and almost crashed into the door. I waited for a few seconds to calm down and then entered, all the while Jack leaned against the frame, letting me enter first. For a few seconds I thought it was a warm gesture, until I found myself splattered face first all over the floor while Jack laughed and entered, avoiding me.
My cheeks turned red from embarrassment and I was about to get up when the teacher entered the classroom through a door near the podium in the low part of the classroom.
" Since you love drama, you will be helping the drama club for a week. Any complaints....?" Said the teacher without looking at me
" Yes ma'am" I muttered.
" Your name?"
" Arun"
" Well, Arun, after class go help the drama club, but for now go back to your seat"
" Yes, ma'am" I repeated. I finally got up and looked around, searching for an empty seat, but all the ones left were on the front row, and I wasn't going near that teacher, ever, or in the back, near... Jack.
Recluctanly, I sat on the seat beside Jack and took out my notebook from the bag, along with the only pen I currently owned.
" Hey, are you mad?" Jack asked." It was just a prank"
" Go prank someone else" Right now all I felt towards him was a deep hatred. He had pretended to be my friend only to mock me.
" Fine, but I'm still your roommate and you'll eventually have to speak to me"
Making a conscious effort to ignore him I turned to face the teacher and started paying attention. I wasn't here to learn, but the more information the better, and that always held true.
" As you all know there are several classes of mages. There are shifters, undead, elementals and empaths, each one has their own special..."
Waking up so early was taking a tool on me. My eyelids felt heavy and I just wanted to rest my head for a second.
Ignoring my deskmates, Jack and a blond guy who I didn't know, I layed my head in the desk and closed my eyes.
" Just for a few seconds" I muttered.
" Arun" I heard the teacher scream and immediately straightened and looked up." Since you are so confident you can sleep in my class come here and answer this question" She said while pointing at the whiteboard, where the question What is the best class of mage? was written in bold letters.
I got up and into the podium when everyone started laughing.
" What's so funny?" I asked no one in particular, but no one, not even the teacher answered.
" Well, what's your answer?" The teacher asked me, unfazed by all the chaos.
I was thinking about what answer to give when I saw Mark, sitting on one of the middle desks, pointing towards his chin.
I touched my chin, but felt nothing, so I ignored it and finally blurted out the first thing I thought.
" No one?"
" That's surprisingly correct. Every class has their advantages and disadvantages, for example shifters are very strong, but they have awfully tempers and feel way too much. Meanwhile empaths..."
She went on and on, while gesturing me to go back to my seat, so I did, still trying to figure out why everyone was smirking at me.
Once in my table I secretly took out my phone and took a picture of my face and immediately knew I had to off Jack. My face had a moustache painted on it, and a beard too. It wouldn't have been so bad if he had chosen a color, but it was of the colors of the rainbow and had little flowers drawn on it.
I gave Jack a death glare and asked the teacher to go out, to which she reluctantly agreed. But before I could go Jack whispered.
" Don't bother, it has magic. You need a spell to take it off"
Ignoring him I got up and went to the bathroom. After over five minutes of trying to get it off my face I realized that Jack had told the truth. Motherfucker. He was going to pay for that.
Planning a master plan to get back at him I went back to class.
The rest of the class went by uneventfully. Everyone still laughed when I entered, but Jack focused on a new victim, thank God for that, and mostly ignored me all of the time.
The next class was a very boring one in which the teacher tried, and failed, to explain that murder was wrong. The argument went something like this:
" Does anyone know why murder is wrong?" The teacher asked.
" It is?" Almost all of the class answered.
" Yes, you should never take a life"
" But it is so much fun" A guy on the front row replied.
" But still, it's bad"
" Sure it is. It's bad if they catch you, if not then you're fine" the same guy argued.
" Wouldn't you feel bad for that person if you took their whole lives from them"
" No, not really" The guy said while almost everyone else that was paying attention nodded.
At this point the teacher, a young, tired man, seemed ready to quit and go home.
" Okay, next topic" He said, giving up on having that discussion.
That argument was the highlight of my day, because Jack was still seated next to me, and didn't stop trying to get a reaction out of me.
The next three classes, magic safety, defense magic and attack magic were just theoretical classes in which the teacher went on and on about some spells and I ended up staying the three classes doodling on my notebook.
Jack still was bothering me, but he took me from class to class, which was nice but didn't mean I liked him.
At lunch I picked something that looked like meat and ran to get away from Jack, who was still following me. I sat into one of the smaller tables, taking a big detour to avoid him, but surprise, surprise, Jack followed.
" Why are you avoiding me?" He pouted.
" Meaby because of this?" I said, pointing to my chin.
" That was a light prank" he looked genuinely confused as to why I was angry, as if he thought this was a small prank. What this guy considered a big one then, I didn't want to know.
After ignoring Jack some more we finally had our afternoon classes.
The first one was a special one for each class of mage, but since I pretended I didn't know mine I spent the whole hour with a calm teacher who I could have sworn had smoked something before coming here talking about our inner selves, which, no surprise, didn't do jack shit.
The next class was combat, and I was looking forward to it, to moving my body, but when I arrived ten minutes late, Jack could be useful sometimes, I discovered this was yet another theoretical class. I spent the whole hour watching the teacher do some poor excuse of taekwondo, which I was sure he had picked up on the Internet.
" This is a substitute teacher" Jack, who was yet again seated near me, whispered in my ear. " The real one will come back next week"
Great, now I was going to have to spend a whole week seeing some teacher do what he thought was martial arts.
The last class of the day was a boring one in which an old, ugly man cited timelines and events, which I really didn't care about.
After the classes I had to go help the drama club, which were just a few guys with a thing for theatrics, and I spent the whole hour just scrolling through my phone, but the good thing was that I finally got rid of Jack, who left to play some card games with his friends. Once alone I took out my map of the school and started going towards the closest circled spot, which was the library, but halfway through I encountered Mark.
" Come with me" He told me, and since I didn't want trouble, I reluctantly followed.
After a while we reached our dorm, where Mark started using magic on my face. After he was gone he disappeared without saying anything.
' That was weird ' I thought, but looking in the bathroom mirror I realized my face was back to being mine. I would've to thank Mark later.
Since I was already in my dorm I went to my room and left my bag on the bed. Then I took the map, left the apartment and approached the library.
