He was so lost in the sudden void of the drawer that he didn't hear the door click open. He didn't hear the silent footsteps across the plush carpet.
"What are you looking for, Adrian?"
Adrian flinched, his whole body jolting as he spun around.
Matteo was standing right behind him. The warmth from earlier was gone.
His face was hard. And his eyes… cold.
"I… I was looking for something to read," Adrian said, his voice trembling slightly. He forced a small, innocent smile. "I didn't think you'd be back so soon."
Matteo didn't move for a moment, his eyes fixed on Adrian like he was trying to read him. Then his expression eased, though his gaze stayed hard to read.
"Okay… baby," Matteo said softly.
He stepped closer, his presence filling the space as he wrapped his arms around Adrian's waist and pulled him against his chest.
"Next time, if you need something, just tell me," he added quietly. "Don't go looking around on your own. It's not right to do that here, okay?"
