"Tony, what are you talking about?" Adrian asked, his heart sinking.
Before Tony could answer, the heavy sound of Matteo's footsteps echoed in the corridor. Tony stood up instantly, capping his water bottle and disappearing through the side exit just as Matteo walked back into the room.
Adrian was still staring at the empty chair across from him, his expression clouded with confusion, when Matteo approached the table.
"Everything okay?" Matteo asked, his gaze fixed on Adrian, picking up the shift in his expression.
"Yes," Adrian said quickly, forcing a small smile. "Everything is fine."
Matteo didn't press him, though he lingered a second longer than usual. "I have some business to handle later," he said, reaching out to adjust a stray lock of Adrian's hair. "I'll be back late. Don't wait up for me, okay?"
Adrian rolled his eyes. "Why would I wait up for you, exactly?"
"Because I'm your man," Matteo replied, his voice dropping into that low, possessive rumble.
