Chapter 24 - Chapter Twenty-Four:Five Seconds

Lina

There are certain places in the city that begin to feel like yours.

Not because you own them.

But because they quietly become part of your routine.

The small coffee shop on the corner of Lexington and 52nd is one of those places for Lina.

The café is warm this morning, the smell of roasted coffee beans drifting through the air while soft jazz plays somewhere near the counter. Rain taps gently against the tall windows, turning the busy street outside into a blur of moving umbrellas.

Lina sits at her usual table by the window, her notebook open beside an empty coffee cup.

She has been here nearly an hour.

Long enough to finish the chapter she was editing.

Long enough to forget the world for a little while.

She closes the notebook and slips it into her bag.

Time to go.

The morning rush is starting to thin, leaving only a few scattered customers. The barista behind the counter waves at her as she stands.

"See you tomorrow, Lina."

"Probably," she says with a small smile.

She adjusts the strap of her bag on her shoulder and walks toward the door.

And that's when it happens.

The door swings open.

Someone steps inside.

For five seconds the entire world slows down.

He's tall.

That's the first thing Lina notices.

Not towering, but tall enough that the doorframe almost feels smaller when he walks through it. Broad shoulders stretch the dark fabric of his coat, and the movement of his body carries an easy confidence that most men try too hard to imitate.

He pauses just inside the café, pushing a hand through slightly tousled dark hair.

Rain droplets slide down the collar of his jacket.

Lina's steps slow without her meaning them to.

He's… striking.

Not in a polished, magazine-cover way.

But in a way that feels real.

Strong jawline.

Light stubble shadowing his face.

Eyes the color of dark amber as they scan the room briefly.

And then there's his smile.

Not directed at her.

Not directed at anyone, really.

Just the faint curve of someone who seems completely comfortable in his own skin.

For five seconds Lina forgets she's supposed to be walking.

Her eyes move over him before she can stop herself.

Tall.

Lean but solid.

The kind of build that suggests someone who works out without obsessing over it.

His shirt fits just close enough to hint at the shape of his chest beneath it.

He smells faintly of rain and something warm… maybe cedar or spice.

It's ridiculous how quickly she notices these things.

And just as quickly.

He walks past her.

His shoulder brushes close enough that she feels the warmth of his presence for half a second.

Then he's moving toward the counter.

Just like that.

The moment is over.

Lina blinks.

Her hand is already on the café door.

She steps outside into the cool morning air.

And only then does she realize something strange.

Her heart is beating faster.

For absolutely no reason.

She exhales slowly.

Seriously, Lina?

It was just a man walking into a coffee shop.

People do that every day.

She starts down the sidewalk, adjusting her coat as the wind brushes against her face.

But after three steps.

She glances back through the café window.

Inside, the man is standing at the counter ordering coffee.

His sleeves are pushed up slightly now.

Strong forearms.

Relaxed posture.

The barista laughs at something he says.

Of course she does.

Men like him probably make people laugh easily.

He takes his coffee and turns slightly.

For a brief second his eyes pass across the window.

Across the street.

Across her.

But if he notices her at all, it's only in passing.

Just another stranger walking by.

Lina quickly looks away and continues down the street.

The city noise swallows her thoughts for a moment.

Taxis honk.

People rush past.

Someone nearby is talking loudly on their phone.

Normal morning sounds.

Still.

Her mind drifts back to the café.

To the man she saw for exactly five seconds.

It's ridiculous how clear the image still is.

The rain on his coat.

The relaxed confidence in the way he moved.

The quiet warmth of his smile.

She shakes her head slightly as she reaches the office building entrance.

"Get a grip," she mutters under her breath.

Because the truth is.

She's met men more attractive.

Men more powerful.

Men who command attention the moment they walk into a room.

Victor Hale is proof of that.

Victor doesn't enter spaces quietly.

Victor owns them.

And yet…

There was something about that man in the café.

Something easy.

Something uncomplicated.

Something that didn't carry the weight of power or expectation.

Just a stranger.

A handsome stranger she'll probably never see again.

Lina pushes open the glass doors of her office building and steps inside.

The thought fades as quickly as it came.

Deadlines wait.

Emails wait.

Work waits.

Life continues.

And somewhere behind her.

In the small coffee shop on Lexington.

Daniel Carter lifts his coffee and glances once more toward the window Lina disappeared from.

Just for a second.

Then he turns away.

Because neither of them knows yet that this brief five-second moment.

Is about to become something much harder to forget.
