Chapter 32 - Chapter Thirty-Two:MOMENTUM

Lina

The first sign that something unusual is happening isn't the email.

It's the noise.

The office is normally full of small sounds keyboards tapping, printers humming, quiet conversations drifting over cubicle walls. But around eleven that morning, the noise suddenly shifts.

A loud shout bursts from the marketing department across the open floor.

"WE GOT IT!"

Lina's fingers pause above her keyboard.

For a moment she thinks someone is joking.

Then another voice joins in.

"No way are you serious?"

Chairs roll back. A burst of applause erupts from somewhere near the conference rooms. Someone whistles loudly.

Lina turns slowly in her chair.

And just like that, Chloe appears beside her desk like a hurricane in human form.

"We won!"

Lina blinks.

"What?"

Chloe shoves her phone toward Lina's face.

"The contract. The campaign proposal. The client just approved it."

The words take a moment to land.

Lina grabs her own phone and opens her email.

There it is.

The subject line reads:

Campaign Proposal Approved Full Partnership Contract

Her heart jumps.

They actually did it.

Weeks of late nights.

Rewriting copy until midnight.

Daniel rearranging entire presentation slides because the design "felt off."

Chloe arguing passionately about font sizes.

And now

It worked.

Daniel appears a moment later, walking toward them through the excited crowd gathering near the desks.

He moves with the same relaxed confidence he always carries, but today his smile is impossible to miss.

He's wearing a dark navy button-down shirt, the fabric crisp against his broad shoulders, sleeves rolled neatly to his forearms. His dark hair is slightly messy as if he ran a hand through it earlier while concentrating.

"That reaction tells me you saw the email," he says calmly.

Chloe spins dramatically.

"Daniel Carter, marketing genius."

"I'll accept partial credit," he replies.

Lina stands slowly from her chair.

"You're serious?" she asks.

Daniel nods once.

"We got the full contract."

A warm rush of relief spreads through Lina's chest.

"That's… huge."

"Exactly."

Across the room someone starts clapping again.

Within seconds more people join in.

Their manager emerges from the conference room holding a tablet and laughing.

"Well," he says loudly, "looks like we're celebrating today."

Chloe pumps her fist in the air.

"Yes!"

By late afternoon the office terrace has transformed completely.

Normally it's just a quiet outdoor break area — a few metal tables, some potted plants, and a view of the city skyline stretching endlessly beyond the glass railing.

Today it looks like a small festival.

Someone ordered catering.

Long tables now hold trays of grilled vegetables, fresh sandwiches, fruit platters, and more desserts than any office probably needs.

Portable speakers play upbeat music softly in the background.

Employees stand in small groups laughing and talking, the tension of the past few weeks finally dissolving into relief.

Lina steps out onto the terrace holding a cup of lemonade.

The late afternoon sun warms the city in soft golden light. Tall buildings reflect the sky like mirrors, and a gentle breeze moves through the open space.

She leans against the railing for a moment, taking it all in.

She didn't realize how exhausted she'd been until now.

Daniel appears beside her a moment later.

"You look like someone studying a very unusual wildlife exhibit," he says.

Lina glances at him.

"I'm just observing."

"This?"

He gestures around at the lively crowd.

"Is what happens when people remember they're allowed to relax."

Lina smiles faintly.

Daniel is dressed slightly more casually now, having rolled his sleeves even higher. The sunlight highlights the subtle lines of muscle in his forearms as he rests his elbows on the railing.

"You should be celebrating," he adds.

"I am."

"You're standing alone with lemonade."

"That counts."

Daniel laughs quietly.

"You deserve some credit for today."

"For what?"

"The campaign."

"That was a team effort."

"Still."

He studies her briefly.

"You pushed the concept further than anyone else."

Lina looks away slightly.

Compliments have always made her uncomfortable.

"Thanks," she says quietly.

Just then Chloe appears again, balancing two cupcakes carefully in her hands.

"Victory dessert," she announces.

She hands one to Lina and one to Daniel.

The cupcake has thick vanilla frosting and tiny gold sprinkles on top.

Chloe steps back and studies them both with narrowed eyes.

"What?" Lina asks.

Chloe tilts her head.

"Something is different."

Daniel raises an eyebrow.

"That sounds threatening."

Chloe points directly at Lina.

"You."

"Me?"

"Yes."

"You look…"

She pauses dramatically.

"…happy."

Lina groans.

"I'm celebrating a successful project."

"Sure."

Chloe glances at Daniel.

Then back at Lina.

"Totally unrelated to the tall man standing next to you."

Daniel chuckles softly.

"I feel like I'm being evaluated."

"You are," Chloe replies.

"And my investigation is ongoing."

Before Lina can respond, their manager claps loudly to gather attention.

"Alright everyone!"

The conversations fade slightly as people gather closer.

"I have another announcement."

The group quiets.

"Because of this campaign win, the client has invited our team to attend their partner event next weekend."

Excited murmurs spread through the crowd.

"Where?" someone calls out.

Their manager smiles broadly.

"Chicago."

For a split second the world seems to slow.

Chicago.

The word echoes quietly in Lina's mind.

Because Chicago isn't just another city.

It's Victor's city.

She keeps her expression carefully neutral as people cheer around her.

"Travel and accommodations are covered," the manager continues. "Consider it a work trip and celebration."

Chloe gasps dramatically.

"Road trip energy!"

"Plane trip," Daniel corrects.

"Same vibe."

Lina forces a small smile.

But inside, something tightens.

She never expected to go back there.

By the time evening arrives the office begins to quiet again.

Most people leave early after the celebration.

Lina gathers her things at her desk, sliding her laptop carefully into her bag.

Her outfit today is simple but polished a soft cream blouse tucked into high-waisted charcoal trousers, paired with low black heels. Her dark hair falls loosely over her shoulders, slightly tousled from the breeze outside earlier.

She's just zipping her bag when Daniel approaches.

"Heading out?"

She nods.

"Yeah."

"Good timing."

"Why?"

"I was about to ask if you wanted company walking out."

"That's becoming a habit."

"I like habits."

They walk together toward the elevators.

The office lights glow warmly above them as they pass rows of empty desks.

For a moment neither of them speaks.

Then Daniel clears his throat slightly.

"So."

Lina glances at him.

"So?"

"You never answered my question."

"What question?"

"About dinner."

"Oh."

"You remember."

"Yes."

The elevator doors slide open.

They step inside.

Daniel presses the lobby button.

The quiet space hums softly as the doors close.

"This time I mean an actual dinner," he says.

Lina tilts her head slightly.

"Not lunch?"

"No."

"Not emergency work food?"

"Definitely not."

She studies him for a moment.

"You're persistent."

"I prefer the word determined."

The elevator begins descending.

"And if I say no?"

"Then I'll still eat dinner," he replies calmly.

"Just sadly."

Lina laughs softly.

"You're very dramatic."

"I try."

The elevator doors open into the lobby.

They step out together.

Lina thinks about it for a moment.

Daniel has been easy to be around.

Comfortable.

Safe.

There's no pressure in his presence.

And lately, she's noticed something else.

She's been smiling more.

"Okay," she says finally.

Daniel turns toward her.

"Okay?"

"Dinner."

A slow grin spreads across his face.

"Friday?"

"Friday."

"Perfect."

As they walk toward the exit doors, Lina suddenly feels eyes on her.

She glances back.

Chloe stands near the reception desk pretending to scroll through her phone.

But the moment Lina looks over

Chloe raises one eyebrow slowly.

A silent, knowing look.

Lina shakes her head slightly.

Chloe just smiles wider.

Because Chloe sees it clearly.

The change.

And maybe Lina does too.

Somewhere between late nights, shared umbrellas, and quiet laughter

Daniel Carter has started occupying space in her life.

And next weekend…

They'll all be traveling to Chicago.

A city Lina once promised herself she wouldn't return to.

A city full of memories.

And possibly…

Unfinished stories.
