Chapter 45 - Chapter Forty-Five :INTRODUCTION

The rooftop terrace hums with quiet energy.

Chicago stretches endlessly beyond the glass railing, a sea of lights shimmering across the dark water of the lake. Soft jazz drifts through the warm night air while guests move easily between small conversation circles.

Lina still feels Victor's presence even after he steps away to greet other guests.

Some people carry attention with them when they enter a room.

Victor carries gravity.

Chloe leans closer to Lina, lowering her voice.

"Okay," she whispers, eyes wide, "you did not warn me about that."

Lina exhales slowly.

"About what?"

Chloe gestures subtly toward the far side of the terrace where Victor is speaking with a group of executives.

"That."

Lina doesn't answer.

Because Chloe isn't wrong.

Victor looks exactly the same as she remembers.

Tall.

Controlled.

The dark suit he wears tonight fits him perfectly, sharp lines emphasizing his broad shoulders and long frame. The soft lights of the terrace catch the edge of his jawline as he turns slightly, listening to someone speaking beside him.

Nothing about him feels rushed.

Or uncertain.

He stands like a man completely comfortable with the world bending around him.

Chloe studies Lina carefully.

"You dated him."

It isn't a question.

Lina looks away toward the skyline.

"Something like that."

Chloe exhales.

"Well that explains… a lot."

Before Lina can ask what that means, another voice appears beside them.

"Am I interrupting?"

Daniel.

He steps up beside Lina, holding two glasses of champagne.

Tonight he looks different than he did at the office earlier.

More polished.

His black suit jacket fits comfortably across his shoulders, the white shirt beneath it open at the collar in a relaxed, effortless way. His hair is slightly tousled from the evening breeze.

Daniel hands one glass to Lina.

"Peace offering."

"For what?"

"For abandoning you during the meeting earlier."

Lina smiles faintly.

"You didn't abandon me. You were in the finance briefing."

"Still counts."

Chloe watches the interaction with growing amusement.

Daniel turns to her politely.

"Chloe, you look amazing tonight "

Chloe smile.

"I like him," she says to Lina.

Lina shakes her head slightly.

Daniel's easy warmth fills the space around them in a way that feels… comfortable.

Normal.

But suddenly Chloe's attention shifts.

Her gaze moves past Daniel's shoulder.

"Oh," she murmurs again.

Lina already knows.

Victor is approaching.

This time he isn't alone.

Two senior executives walk with him, continuing a conversation about the project.

As they near Lina's group, Victor's attention shifts.

He notices Daniel.

And something in his expression sharpens just slightly.

Daniel turns at the same moment.

For a brief second the two men simply look at each other.

Victor Hale.

Daniel Carter.

Two very different kinds of presence.

Victor's is controlled power.

Daniel's is relaxed confidence.

Victor speaks first.

"Good evening."

Daniel nods politely.

"Good evening."

One of the executives gestures toward Lina's group.

"Mr. Hale, this is part of the New York marketing team."

Victor's gaze moves calmly between them.

"I'm aware."

His eyes settle briefly on Daniel.

"And you are?"

Daniel offers his hand.

"Daniel Carter."

Victor looks at the hand for a moment.

Then he shakes it.

His grip is firm.

Measured.

"Victor Hale."

The handshake lasts exactly one second longer than necessary.

Just long enough to feel deliberate.

Daniel doesn't seem bothered.

He releases the handshake easily.

"Your headquarters is impressive," Daniel says casually. "Chicago suits you."

Victor studies him quietly.

"It usually does."

The surrounding executives continue discussing the project, unaware of the subtle tension standing between the two men.

Chloe senses it immediately.

She glances at Lina.

Lina pretends to be interested in her champagne.

Victor's gaze returns briefly to Lina again.

Then back to Daniel.

"You weren't in the meeting earlier."

"I was pulled into another department briefing."

Victor nods once.

"I see."

The pause that follows is brief.

But charged.

Then Victor steps slightly aside as another guest approaches him.

The moment breaks.

The executives pull Victor back into conversation as they move toward another part of the terrace.

Daniel watches them go.

Then he looks back at Lina.

"Your boss seems intense."

Chloe almost chokes on her drink.

"Intense is one word."

Lina gives her a warning look.

Daniel glances between them.

"What?"

"Nothing," Lina says quickly.

But across the terrace, Victor has stopped walking.

For a moment he looks back.

Directly at Lina.

His expression unreadable.

As if he's trying to solve a puzzle he didn't expect to encounter tonight.

Daniel notices the glance.

His brow lifts slightly.

"Huh."

"What?"

"Nothing."

But Daniel's instincts are sharp.

And something about Victor Hale.

feels strangely familiar.

As the music continues and the city lights shimmer below the terrace, one thing becomes clear.

This project has just become far more complicated.

For all of them.
